I received a call from them from them too. Let's blow the whistle on them. Call them back and speak softly. After they turn up the volume in their headset, blow a whistle in their ear and hang up. :)

Call me twice and even left message that is was very time sensitive that i should call immediately after hanging up
The man had an accent and said that the reason for the call was regarding a lawsuit the IRS had against me and it would depend on me as to the result.

All of your comments were deeply appreciated. I received a call from 2028641199, but the call went to my answering device. I immediately knew something was off when the caller did not say to whom he was calling. Usually, an official call would be similar to, "Sir/Madame, this is IRS Agent Name, Title and I am calling for Mr. Jefferey Mossberg." Followed by more official sounding crap. Maybe the scammers read our complaints and will change their introductions. Still be vigilant and do not fall for stupidity. Official language does not begin with - This message is intended for you and  ends with - The only thing I can say is situation unfolds on you.

I also received a call from this number claiming that I owe the IRS. The man stated that the FBI & local police had a warrant for my arrest. I kept questioning the rude gentleman and he proceeded to tell me that the local police were going to call me shortly after I hung up the phone with him.  Surely, 2 minutes later I received a call from a number very similar to the police stations in my area. A man with an accent claiming to be the "chief of police" said that they were going to come to my work place and arrest me. So ridiculous!!!!!!!

Guy with Indian accent claiming to be Don or John Douglas from the IRS with basically the same dialogue as everyone else about some lawsuit. It's clearly a scam because the IRS has no reason to have any lawsuit against me in the first place and when did the IRS begin notifying people of lawsuits through phone messages??!! Absolutely absurd!!

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

>> Why cant they track these crooks <<

Because the phone numbers are faked, and the call probably came from India or Pakistan, or similar country.

We can no longer believe the phone number we see on our caller IDs (CID) belongs to the person who called!  The bad guys are now using easily accessed technology to "spoof" the CID numbers, so their real number does not appear.

The problem has gotten so bad, the US government actually passed an Act, called "The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009", making such spoofing illegal.  See http://www.fcc.gov/guides/caller-id-and-spoofing
for more information.

The FCC adopted that Act in June, 2010, stating that violators could be fined up to $10,000 for each violation.

However, the bad guys are ignoring this law ... after all, they are criminals, and that is what criminals do.  Although we now have a "law" against spoofing, it is very difficult to enforce it.

So, if you see a CID number on your phone when you are called by some scammer or telemarketer, it might not belong to the scammer!  It might be the number of some unsuspecting third party ... or, it might be one of those numbers that charge $25 (plus about $9 per minute) if you call it back.

I have email voicemail so this is what it pretty much said from an "anonymous  caller id number"

Voicemail from (202) 864-1199
"This message is intended for you. My name is Don Douglas and I'm calling you my address and the reason of my call is to let you know regarding the lawsuit filed against you. By IRS so the very second you receive this message I need you to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive hotline to my division is 2028641199. I repeat it's 2028641199. If you don't return the call. The only thing I can say is situation unfolds on you. Thank you."

I am beyond upset. I it is 9 Pm and I was like WTH. lawsuit? What are you talking about. I'm glad I find that I'm not the only one because this thing screams scam on so many level.

Gentleman with Indian accent who stated that there was an IRS lawsuit held against our business, that it was time sensitive, and he said that if we didn't call, "all I can say is that the situation will unfold on you".  I looked up more information on this person to find that others had been called with this same information, and that it was a scam.
