Rubbish.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Wrong, shill.  The IRS does not contact you by telephone, always and only by mail.  Also, they do not issue an arrest warrant for $2937.  I'm not sure if they arrest you at all for owing taxes, probably only if you defraud the government.  Hell, the former Treasury Secretary owed tens of thousands of dollars to the IRS before he got that position, so, I call Bull Poopy on you.  I would say "nice try" but it really wasn't.

Prank Call
I received the same call mentioned by other posters. Call the FTC (1-877-438-4338) and report it. Doesn't take too long. They can build a class action suit if enough people call.

This is the exact same message that my 82 year old mother received today.  Needless to say she was terrified.  I assured her it was a false scam call, but know she wants to know how they got her home telephone number.  We are in Northern California and I wonder how far reaching this scam is?  All the posts I see here are very recent.  I will definitely report this to our local PD so maybe a warning can go out in the paper warning of this scam.

I received a voicemail with a very heavy accent. Which says the following...
"Return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive and very urgent. My name is, Officer Kevin Anderson, and hot line to mitigation is (202) 864-1223, I repeat it's (202) 864-1223. Don't disregard this message and do return the call. If you don't return the call, and if I don't hear from the attorney either, then the only thing I can do is... wish you good luck. As the situation unfolds in you. Goodbye."

Section 912 defines two separate and distinct offenses. The offenses are impersonation coupled with acting as such and impersonation coupled with demanding or obtaining something of value in such pretended character. False personation of an officer or employee of the United States is an element of both offenses. The Criminal Division's recommendation is that generally in situations which involve the impersonation of a federal officer or employee, coupled with an application for credit, registration for lodging, cashing of a personal check or some other similar act, prosecution should not be initiated under the second part of 18 U.S.C. § 912 unless the subject has also pretended to be acting under color of federal authority or has expressly or implicitly suggested that the valuable thing demanded or obtained was necessary for the performance of his official duty. The basic procedure to follow when deciding whether to prosecute such cases under the second part of 18 U.S.C. § 912 is to determine whether the benefit is purported to run to the federal government or to the federal employee in his capacity as a private citizen. In the case of the latter, there should be no prosecution under the second part of 18 U.S.C. § 912. The alternatives to prosecution under the first part of 18 U.S.C. § 912 are prosecution under 18 U.S.C. § 701, § 702, and action by state and local authorities.

I received a similar call, it said they were from the IRS and basically what your message said. There was no name mentioned, just this message is for you. It sounded threatening and the caller ID said WSHNGZNI DC, at first glance I thought it said Washington DC. I would not call the number back, as matter of fact I hung up before the message ended.

I got a call from this number about owing taxes and needed to hear from me or my lawyer or I was going to be sorry, and they could not help what happens to us if we do not contact them by today, the caller sounded like a voice recording and it was very hard to understand and they did not speak English very well, and I could barely make out what they were saying and some of it I didn't understand!
