WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Got a call from "Raymond Hoffman"  saying  that he worked for the IRS in the "Tax Forward Department".  He said he received a legal definition notice that someone registered a tax fraud in my name.  He said that I should call him before it is registered into the Federal Court House and a warrant is issued for my arrest.

I received the same call message from Melvin Basek(?) And said to call back. Urgent about an IRS tax fraud. When i called back the person just said hello. Gave his name as Richard White and Melvin's supervisor. He wanted money TODAY or i would be arrested and have to face the judge. I told him my accountant had power of attorney and he need to speak to her. Gave him her phone number and name and told him never to call me again and just to go ahead and send the police and i hung up.  Two days later got another call from 347-559-0378 and just hung up.

One of my clients received a call from this guy claiming that she had a tax fraud case against her.  We called the number back as the Power of Attorney.  We asked the "agent" what his badge ID number and Name was.  He responded in a thick Indian accent, "My ID number is on my dick b**ch, you can crawl up under my desk to check it out"  We asked him to repeat himself.  He said "Why so you can record me b**ch?  Are you trying to expose me?"  We said, "I'm sorry, I don't understand."  He said, "Why don't you crawl back into your mother's pu**y you b**ch!"  So we all started laughing, so then he started a mock laughter and called us mother f**kers.

Received two calls from this number 2028641255; one yesterday which I hung up on, then one on my answering machine today.  I called the number and got a busy signal, or telling me to call back later.  Call was to notify me that I was being investigated for tax evasion and tax fraud and to call them back for further information before this would be going into judification.  Thanks for putting me at ease and helping me discover that this is only a scam.  Targeting people - I am a single senior citizen - is very cruel and disconcerting and I hope that whoever is behind this will be discovered and prosecuted to the fullest.

My message from a man who said his name is "Dallas White" from IRS. Something about a debt that will go to The Federal Courthouse. Had a very thick accent and can only understand about every fourth word in his message. He couldn't pronounce my name which is quite easy to pronounce. Begging me to call him back it's urgent. Yeah, don't think so and don't sit by the phone!

Just got a message re. "fraud" referring to the phone # 202 864 1255. I called that number. The subject was about "evasion" of taxes within 2008-2013. The person with a slight accent (apparently Indian) told me in a very aggressive and demanding tone that I had committed a tax fraud (???) and that IRS opened a court case about me. To my question, why didn't I hear anything about this from anywhere before, the person replied: because "IRS wrote 35 letters (!!) to you and all had been returned". Interestingly, since my name, exact address, and the phone # have been accurately exposed on each tax return, why did not I receive any letter? However, there was no any demands for money, nor any personal information. The person just suggested to hire a lawyer. I would understand it if he wanted me to wire out some money. But to hire a lawyer... What's the point?

This guys kept on calling at least couple of times a day.. finally I caved in and picked up the call Today.   He started telling me that I was under investigation due to incorrect TAX fillings.  So proceeded to ask him some questions like his supervisor and what legislative branch he worked for etc..  Finally he say "why you asking all this question !".. and finally he admitted he was in Bangladesh and he had to work.. so they scam people.. I told him get real job like everyone else.. and do some honest work.

After I asked her to mail me the issue and do not discuss my personal information over the phone, the caller hanged up. This is scam. IRS never calls and discuss fraud over the phone. Be aware.
