I just ignore any call that comes up withheld,, unknown or that start with something like 20347 etc the answer machine helps pretend I'm out and I can see who calls by the caller display I registered with the telephone preference service but that doesn't work much so I think it's best to just ignore ,, if it's the hospital or dentist for example they should leave a message anyway or simply not use withheld numbers in the first place

If you really are a government official, I think you need to be reminded:
Just like American technology was used against us during the 911 attack, criminals and terrorists are now using the telephone to disrupt and discredit businesses, steal identities, extort money from and harass the people of this country in order to finance their terrorist cells and criminal enterprises. It stands to reason that they look for areas the government is least likely to defend to carry out their attacks, so they have chosen this one. As a result, the populace that you are defending in other ways is being undermined before your eyes. For that reason I would like to this to be categorized under crimes and policing, and defending our country from the onset of terrorism.
If you continue to put these issues on the back burner, there will be very few citizens left to protect, because the criminals would have arrived ahead of you.

Thank you for your input Colin, currently we have some very demanding issues and policies to worry about ie: the global economic crisis, natural disasters, decreasing environmental damage and promoting sustainable ways of living, crime and policing, defending our country from the onset of terrorism, deficit reduction and energy and climate change to name but a few. Obviously since reading your post we realise it is much more important that we drop these current concerns and solely focus on ensuring you do not receive unwanted telephone calls in the future.

These people call regularly, very rarely do you actually get someone speaking. When they do they start asking questions about finances - ' we are doing a survey and not selling anything '.

This government ought to force phone companies to do something about this sort of thing - I am quite happy to tell these b@stards to fo when they ring (which I do), but would much prefer for the phone not to ring in the first place!

Just had a call from this number - to do with consumer research?  Told them we weren't interested and they hung up..   Sick and fed up of cold calling!!

This number is a real pain, I've had calls quite late in the evening, I never pick up it's a pity you can't block phone nos like junk email!!!

Have looked it up on the www, because I have been getting many phone calls from this number. If you thought it was located anywhere particular, think again. My phone displays numbers, incl. international ones. The international prefixes attached to this number are a clue here, as I had the same number calling with VARIOUS countries' prefixes over a period of two month now, which makes it difficult to track. Up to 4 times a day with various prefixes... As only the answering phone picks up on my end, I have not been left a message precisely.
This suggests that this is simply a computer call, with a group of people behind who are trying to fish for info. If you pick up and somebody is actually at the other end, do not even confirm your name. (Ask: Who ants to know?) Through your phone number they have access to quite a lot of personal info already, even though they may have got their hands on it illegally. So don't confirm anything, instead ask them questions. If they give a company name, ask where this company is registered etc. Tell them that this is the n-th time you received a call from them, and request to be removed from their callers list. If they still keep calling, launch a formal complaint with your phone company. If enough of us complain about bogus numbers, maybe phone companies devise a system that allows them/us to filter and block such numbers after they have been made aware of phishing numbers. Though this sort of thing might come with unwanted blocking of numbers, too, as a potential risk if bogus callers have hijacked numbers they are using...

if  they phone me again I'll keep them hanging on to put there phone bill up

Computerised Call Centre hoping for a response! I have been getting so many, I now vet all my calls using answer phone without a greeting message. This delays the pick up and the other end think they have struck gold.  Because I have free minutes on my mobile I don't mind calling friends back trapped by my answer phone!

this number calls at least twice a day . when answered there is silence. so the other night i swore down th phone at them. an indian voice swore back at me but would not tell me who they are. they are a bloody pest

This number plus the same number with a 1 on front has called my home and mobile number at least 6 times a day for the past week if you answer the line goes dead.

I am sick tired and weary of  picking up the phone to this number, just a dead line, and then the engaged tone, nothing else it is driving me nuts who ever the joker is they need to be locked up and the key throwing away, this not what I am really thinking but I am too polite to write that down.

Have been pestered by this caller constantly for days now. I never answer calls from numbers I don't recognise so don't know what it's about. Time the government did something about these nuisance/scam calls.
