I had the same thing happen to me, i paid them for an old debt that i'm pretty sure was still out there and asked them to mail or email a receipt, which i never got. Oncei paid them thru a prepaid vanilla reload card they guy said i owed more money and i needed to pay or they were going to have me thrown in jail. I then contacted a law firm where they told me not to pay them any more money. I need any advice on what I can do to get my money back.

They're scammers - legitimate debt collectors would send you a debt validation letter via USPS mail (not fax or email) proving you owe the debt and that they can collect said debt in your state. Whatever you do, do not pay them anything! Tell them you're recording all calls from them to you (even if you're not) and that the FBI is monitoring those calls.

They are scammers - they should have sent a debt validation letter proving you owe the debt to them and that they are legally entitled to collect said debt in your state. NO legitimate debt collector will ask you to put money on a pre-paid card - only scammers do this! If a company refuses to send proof that you owe a debt to them, ignore them and report them to the FTC and your state's Attorney General. You may also want to put fraud alerts on your bank accounts and with the three credit agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion). Whatever you do, do NOT pay them any more money!

Actually, it's not even old debts they're after - they harass people trying to frighten them to pay for completely bogus or paid off debts! They harvest a lot of information from online payday sites, and yes, they are scammers calling from India.

Received a call on my birthday May 28th from a man stating I'm being brought up on Federal charges for fraud. I was threatened that my job will be notified & warrant for my arrest will be issued unless i pay them 880.00 or 500.00 to stop the process of the legal paper work. I stated I will contact the lenders I dealt with they immediately advised me that the communication has been ceased & I'm not suppose to contact them, I'm only suppose to speak to them. My sister googled the different numbers that keeps calling me & that's how we found out that I was being scammed...

They just called my work demanding an employee's cell phone #. I said they don't receive personal calls and to stop calling and he demanded the cell phone # and I said no and he asked for a manager. I told him again to stop calling and hung up on him. He barely spoke English and was so rude. I wouldn't give them ANY info if I were you, they do NOT sound legit.

Frank has been harassing my wife lately as well. I answered and told him he didn't sound like a Frank Johnson! He didn't like that at all, and told me he would see me behind bars too! Lol.

He had an accent from India and stated I got a cash advance loan and check deception etc..... I knew this is a scam immediately as I have NEVER gotten a payday loan, cash advance or anything like that. They called back again both times hanging up on them.

I am now a victim of this as well. They have called my cell phone and work phone threatening me and telling me that I am being charged for check fraud for an unpaid payday loan through "American cash advance" and that they are going to call my work and inform them that I am having federal charges brought against me and a warrant put out for my arrest. When I started asking questions they just said that they were sending information to my address and hung up on me. I called back and I told them that I know they are trying to scam me and the guy just started yelling at me saying I was going to lose my job and get arrested. Definitely makes me nervous that stuff like this can happen.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

They called my cell phone and Job number. I let them know i was calling the BBB and the man started cursing me out. He hung up the phone and I called them back and told him not to call my job again and that he was calling a Federal Business and I will have his job shut down for harassment if they call again. He cursed a little more and hung up on me. I called from my cell and told them the same thing. That was this morning and they have not called back yet. They had been calling me since last week.
