The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Received another call today at work, cell and home.  They are going to now contact HR to find out what the policy is to serve me a summons.  I called the number and got a message...they actually sounded American on the recording..actually African American.  Usually it's the Indian sound people.  Wow now I guess these companies are getting people that can actually speak the language to call.  No one still can tell me my FCC rights as a citizen.  So anyone debt collector that calls and does not notify you of your rights first, are FAKE!!

This company called my ex-coworker's cell phone today.  I have so many creditors after me because I am a compulsive shopper and will use any method possible to shop on-line.  Then I don't pay my bills!  I give out the phone numbers of my associates and they all get credit and collection calls for me. Too bad this company doesn't have a live person available to actually speak to the phone number they are calling.  Then they would have been able to get the REAL phone number Karen Sorensen.

You can verify that you have no charges filed against you by contacting your local police office.  They have access to all the records of charges filed in your area.  This is an illegal scare tactic from a shady debt collector.  If you ever do talk to someone demand a debt validation notice in writing via US Mail.  Nothing else is acceptable for proof of debt.  It must show the company name, address and phone number, who held the original debt and for how much, the current debt and how the amount was arrived at, when the last payment was made, proof that the company contacting you now owns the debt and proof they are allowed to collect debts in your state. Do not acknowledge or agree to anything until your receive it.  If they refuse, tell them they are in violation of Federal Law for refusing.  You should also look up the statute of limitations on suing to collect a debt in your state.  If the debt is too old, they cannot sue but can still attempt to collect.  Debt is also civil and not criminal, you cannot be arrested for debt.  Also only city, county or state prosecutors can file charges and they never contact you first.  You are either arrested or receive a summons to appear in court to answer the charges against you.

These crooks have left several messages, and they all say this is the third and final message. First off they need to learn how to count. Process Servers DO NOT CALL they just show up. They do not verify home or work address because, if the collection agency did their homework correctly, they would have that information already. These guys are real Einstein?s because they are calling about case number xxxx leading you to believe that something has been filed with the courts, but at the end of the message it says ?before this is filed with the court? OMG who wrote this pitch? Lmfao! It seems they are using some kind of VOIP because of the various amounts of different area code telephone numbers they have left. Call from 971-404-3194?. 207-221-0841, 206-430-5417.and 502-805-1749
If you happen to speak with them tell them you will mail in certified funds or cashiers check and for them to give you an overnight address. Insist that if they want payment that is how you will send it (of course do not send them a dime). And report the address to the FTC, FCC, BBB, and the Consumer Protection Agency.

It's simple. They're frauds! Federal law rquires them to provide you with full written validation of their claims on request. They refuse or make excuses, they've proven themselves to be outright criminals or 3rd party collectors in blatant disregard of federal regulations. Call or go online to your local clerk of court. You will, no doubt, find that they will have never heard of you or them.
Learn of your rights under the FDCPA. Links are to be found here, to the right of your screen.
They are using tactics that are older than dirt, and which can be seen through a mile away. If you take another call, tell them that all your calls will be recorded. Invite them to keep talking. You'll probably get a short burst of profanity followed by a dial tone.
Be safe. Be aware.
