Got a call from "Natalie" from "Chris Adams Associates" asking for a former roommate (we shared the phone in my name) who has since moved to Australia. "Natalie" was quite flummoxed when I shared that bit of info ;-) "Australia!? What's she doing there!?" I repeated more slowly for Natalie, "She moved there. Five years ago."
Natalie gave me this number (206-774-9857) and a six-digit "case number" claiming it was a civil matter and very important that former roommate get back in touch since "they're filing the case tomorrow". I said: sure, whatever.
Clearly a debt collector (said roommate left behind one or two outstanding credit card balances) but what can they do when the person has moved to another hemisphere?? ;-)

Melissa-
This is definitely NOT the IRS (they ceased doing business with third party collection agencies in March).
CRA is a third party CA trying to scare you into paying a time-barred debt by threatening to report it as a charge-off (1099-C) to the IRS, if you do not pay.
Threatening to report an UNVALIDATED debt as a charge-off to the IRS is illegal!
Send them this "drop dead" letter VIA certified mail and request a return receipt:

RE: [insert account number or name of account or name of debt]:
Dear [insert collector's name or company name],
This letter is in response to your [letter dated xx-xx-2005] (copy enclosed) or [phone call on xx-xx-2005], concerning the collection of the above referenced [account or date].
I do not believe I owe what you say I owe therefore I dispute this debt. I am well aware of my rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and my state laws so I hope to save both of us a great deal of time by letting you know that not only do I dispute the validity of this debt, I have also checked with my State Attorney General and verified that the Statute of Limitations for enforcing this type of debt through the courts in (insert your state or the state in which the contract was signed) has expired. Therefore, should you decide to pursue this matter in court I intend to inform the court of my dispute of this debt and that the "statute of limitations" has expired.
This letter is your formal notification that I consider this matter closed and demand that you, or anyone affiliated with your company, stop contacting me regarding this or any other matter except to advise me that your debt collection efforts are being terminated or that you or the creditor are taking specific actions allowed by the FDCPA or my state laws.
Be advised that I consider any contact not in accordance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act a serious violation of the law and will immediately report any violations to my State Attorney General, to the Federal Trade Commission and, if necessary, take whatever legal action is necessary to protect myself. Be advised that I tape record all phone calls and violations of the FDCPA can result in you or your company being personally fined up to $1,000 per incident.

PS--Stay OFF the phone! They are trying to coerce you into admitting that you "own" this debt, so they can reage it.

I got a call, ignored it, got another call (within 10 seconds), answered it (mistake). Some guy asked for me, I said yes, he said he had paperwork for IRS that needed to be resolved and transferred me 2 his mgr. I said ok cause I had currently signed papers for a IRS extension. The guy that they transferred me to was loud, couldn't understand him. I said, "I don't know what you're talking about". When he finally said "credit card", I said, "is this a bill collector?"...he said that if I didn't pay he was going to report to IRS, ect..I said "what does a CC have to do with IRS?" he got quiet..I asked how old the account was (7+ years). I said the statue of limitations has passed on it and I know my rights, and just hung up. These calls, I believe after reading above, are also from a lady asking me to immediately call them back in a very rude manner on Voice Mails left from previous calls, but can't remember the phone number on those.

Yes, I just received a call from a "kristin Taylor" and she was asking for some man named George. I told her she had the wrong number and hung up. I couldn't hear her that well anyway (bad connection).
She called back and left a demanding message for this man on my voicemail.
My voicemail greeting clearly states my name. Anyway, I called back and told them they had the wrong number but it does sound like they work for some sort of a call center for a collection agency. very unprofessional and rude. If I get another call I am reporting it as well.

They gave me the name Kristin Taylor with CRA, saying we were contact people for Rhonda Guthier. When we said we didn't know them, and hung up, I decided to call back to get more information on their company. The woman became very rude, refused to tell me what her company was about, and then hung up on me. I'm reporting this to the police.

This morning I received a call from this number stating that my name had been given as a contact for someone I knew. When I asked who I was speaking with, she hung up. Very suspicious. My advice is to ignore this number.

A woman called asking me to call a Chris Adams @ 800-738-4814.
I asked if call was from a collection agency. She said no. I hung up. She called me back twice with-in 60 seconds.
The last time she called she said "Chris Adams" wanted to talk to me.
I spoke with him. He was rude, called me names and said a process server was on the way to my house to serve me concerning a 10 year old Visa Account I supposedly never paid and he was suing me in court.
After a couple minutes or so i hung up.
