Scam
I am also writing about the computer virus tech scam. All of these numbers are spoofed, so even if it looks like it is coming from Angels Camp , CA, it is NOT the real number. I have traced these to the Phillipines, India and Pakistan. I have reported and reported these to the FCC and the FTC, and nothing ever gets done about it. The law was passed in December of 2010 against spoofing or faking numbers. And, still it goes on and on and on. next time I will tell them my computer is on fire. lol That is a good one. Why can;t these people be stopped I get called from any time from 6 am to midnight, all men, all heavy accents, and all can cuss up a storm in plain English. so, even if a number looks like it is coming from CA or NJ or OK, it is not. The numbers are spoofed, so caller ID does us no good. People need to understand this, and blocking the spoofed numbers only makes them use a different one next time. Blocking will not stop them, ever. so I mess with them when they call, and of course, never give any information. My best question to them is, "what kind of computer am I using, since you are getting pinged??" They stutter around and then I tell them I have a MAC. Even that does not shut them up sometimes, they say they have "workaround from Microsoft that will fix the malware on a MAC." HA! so, I continue to report them, and each # they call me with, and why can't these people be stopped? For anyone who may not know this, they are scammers, want to sell you protection so want a CC#. I have seen waaaaaay too many people fall for this scam. Microsoft is NEVER going to "cold call" you, so quit giving out your credit card #'s! Never trust a cold call from ANYONE. Period.

The national pandemic of telephone terrorism perpetrated by desperate criminal collection agencies and scam artists of every despicable sort is because they are trying to terrorize people who are naive enough to answer and submit to unsolicited telephone calls or written "collection" letters that have no legitimate legal debt associated with them or any of the companies, universities, or whomever else they claim to represent. Because most "little guys" were bankrupted by the criminal Wall St / Congress / Big Oil / Big Bankers / Big Business / Military / Robber Barons, so the desperate collection agencies are attempting to collect unpaid debts from innocent people by terrorizing them into submission. News reports claim that some of these nefarious rogue calls are originating from overseas, where the caller claims to be a relative down on his or her luck who needs hundreds or thousands of dollars to get out of trouble, a policeman or government agent threatening their unwitting victims with lawsuits, fines, garnishments, seizures of property and imprisonment, and any other unconscionable tactic they can use to terrify and swindle the unwary out of their life savings.

Word of advice. NEVER answer any calls you don't recognize or are not expecting. Use selective call rejection service if available, or switch to an Internet-based telephone service which provides comprehensive call rejection options. If rogue calls become chronic, turn off all the ringers on all of your phones except one, and set its volume to the minimum setting. Digital hardware call blockers, the popular "DIGITONE Call Blocker 10" for example, could help or do harm depending on how high-tech and aggressive the rogue callers are against your phone number. The more technology you use against them, the more likely they will use technology more aggressively against you to the point where your phone could ring more frequently from rogue calls and in middle of the night hours. So staying lower-tech could actually help to keep your phone a bit more under their unrelenting predatory radar. If you don't answer the call and the caller is legitimate, they will usually leave a voicemail after the first or second try. Rogue callers almost never leave voicemail messages because that could be used as evidence against them if it came to a lawsuit, albeit spoofed calls are backed by governments and corporations, so there is nothing the little guy can do against such illegitimate activities but to block and ignore them. If you receive a rogue letter in the mail warning you of some "collection" action against you, if you don't actually owe it, reply with a short letter stating that you don't owe it. Or if you do owe all or part of it, reply with something like "You claim I owe you a debt. Under §809 FDCPA, I request validation of this debt."

Only give them your name as THEY have written it to you (e.g. ?John Doe? not ?Jonathon Q. Doe? or however you normally sign your own name), address, and the account number they report. But if you do not owe the debt (zombie debt, aged debt, mistaken or stolen identity, forgery, etc.) state that you have never done any business with them or with the (alleged) original creditor of any kind and you expect the collection agency to close the matter, stop harassing you and take any bad credit marks they've caused off of your credit rating, and furthermore, that any further contact from them must be in writing on their official business correspondence letterhead. Send your letter to them a.s.a.p., always within thirty days, first class certified mail return receipt requested. If they refuse it and you get the letter back unopened, leave it unopened and save it in your files as evidence against them should they pursue legal action against you. If they did receive it and continue to pursue action against you, let them. The judge will throw it out of court. If the rogue collection agency sells your account to another rogue collection agency just tell them the claim has been proven invalid and offer to send them a copy of your letter to the previous rogue collection agency.

Warn all your friends about this rash of desperate collection agency terrorism, and how to combat it. Knowledge is power. The more you learn how to combat rogue collection agencies, back-taxes scammers, phishing scammers, "faith and family" scammers, political action committees and other low-life flimflammers, the more you will learn how easy it is to do.

Above all, keep a record of everything, of every rogue call w/ caller ID information displayed including time and date of each call. Maintain a complete file on any snail-mailed intimidation from rogue collection agencies, including copies of all correspondences and postal receipts. Reporting rogue calls on sites like 800notes.com, whocallsme.com, phoneowner.info is a great idea too, because many people find these sites by googling for the rogue number(s) after receiving calls from them.

Got this call also they are definately spoofing the number , this occured at work which unknown to the heavily accented Arabic man who claimed to be from windows. His loss , he did not REALISE he called a .GOV line , it was time to have some fun I immediately went on another line ( put him on hold ) the real number ( non spoofed yes we can do that ) was traced to a Pakistani TELCOM company , got back on the line identified my self and agency to the person on the line he panicked and hung up,
I then called him on the real unspoffed number , (remember who I work for )
And said his IP over Internet phone system had been identified and that actions were being taken with assets being organized he swore in Arabic at me and hung up.
Somewhere in Pakistan an office is being abandoned at high speed.

Reported the number to the local security service element it appears they are hijacking computers by accessing your system to insert malware into the system for creating  a bot attack for denial of service attacks .If you recieve these calls just hang up DO NOT LET THEM ACCESS YOUR SYSTEM

Just got a call from this number.  I lived in Fresno, so know where they called from.  Angels Camp is a small mountain town and Microsoft would not locate there for lack of people.  I blocked the number with the blocker that comes with your phone system.  Look in the front of your phone book for instructions.  Takes care of the problem.

Last week I got a call from a man with a heavy East Indian accent saying my Windows computer was reporting an error message showing up on my local server indicating that a virus was being downloaded.  It showed up as a "private caller" and sounds like the same scammer.  Too bad for him I have a Mac, so knew it was bogus!

A man called saying he was from Windows Technical Support. When asked he said he did not work for Microsoft, saying they don't make telephone calls.  He claimed that his company was receiving error reports for the past two weeks indicating that my computer had a virus.  He directed me to run the EVENTVWR command, but I told him I wanted to google it first.  When I told him that the first thing that came up was Eventvwr Scam, he ended the call.

209-753-4588 called me. I answered and the person with the foreign accent on the line told me he was calling from "Windows" about my computer problems. I told him that had contacted anyone about any computer problems and he panicked and hung up. The name that showed up on my caller ID along with the number above was "Angels Camp, CA"

I live in New York City. I get these calls all the time. Today I just got one from this same number - 209-753-4588 - in Angels Camp, CA. A guy with an Indian accent said he was from the "Windows tech department" and had an "urgent" message about my computer (or that there was an urgent problem with it - some such thing). I told him I knew it was a scam, said to not ever call me again, and hung up.

Can we do anything about these kinds of calls? I'm on the Do Not Call list but still get this crap all the time. It's not the first time I've gotten a "tech support"/something's-wrong-with-your-computer call. And it irritates me to no end. Can we get a number like one this shut down? Obviously enough people are getting ridiculous calls from it. Who can I report this to, and how?

I got a really big laugh at of your comment.   So smart and funny!  I did the same thing this morning.  I answered knowing it was a scam and said "ALLO"""  and kept saying that when a woman got on the phone.  a lot of background noise.  Kept saying allo, allo and they hung up.     Also got the same type of call the other day from a heavily accented Indian person about the computer.   He kept asking me about my computer and I said I didn't have one and he said that I did and I also said I"m an old lady, I don't know how to use a computer and he hung up and said he would remove my name!   Another number to block!!!

Just got a call very similar to those I read about on this website.  Very thick Asian accent claiming to be from the "Windows Department" trying to tell me my computer had been sending them messages that I had downloaded some malware, etc.  I told him I did not do business like this over the phone and not to call again.  He said it was his "duty" to call and let me know....I hung up.  Is there any office or department to contact and report such calls?
