While I agree that any public information should be removed by googling name & number. Places like spokeo that show up, make them removed the info. The ones digging for more personal information are so called debt collectors, loan scams, medical lawsuit scams, IRS scams and extortion scammers but they never really get all of it. These numbers are mostly spoofed to start, and they are using dialers to call with. Yes they are cold calling.. They only have to plum in a given set of numbers to call like they do and keep changing them. They don't know if you have credit cards or not, they do not know if you have home security or not, heck they have no clue if your elderly or not ..
Here is where the telemarketers need to be reported:

My guess is we all gave our numbers to these scammers/salespeople. Probably is an auto dialer; but is populated with numbers scrubbed by a spider program searching the internet for phone and fax numbers. Can be done with e-mail addresses as well and result in mass e-mail marketing blasts. If you have ever owned a website or posted personal contact information on blogs/social sites or other places; this information can be retrieved from directories/toolbars/webpages and uploaded to automated dialing or e-mail lists. If the contact info is obtained in this publicly posted manner, I am pretty sure the companies can get around the DNC lists initially but once they are told we are on the list we must be removed. Problem with this is that most of these lead lists are purchased; and once reported to the company or scammer who called us cannot call us again, it doesn't stop other companies who had been sold the same lists from calling us or additional lead generation companies to acquire the same information. I disagree with JHM's post above that it is a random sequence of numbers dialed. Cold calling is extremely expensive and time consuming. Whether for legitimate or criminal purposes, these phone calls are targeted to us for a specific reason, and these calls are designed to optimize to the best of the ability of the caller to target the most effective audience to make their time worth while. As my profile name suggests; this is just a possible reason why we might all be receiving the same calls. I am not sure; but my background knowledge tells me this is a good possibility. So use good judgment putting personal information out there.

Just got a call from this number and they left no voice mail and when I called it back it went to a fax. This is the first time they have called me and I looked up the number on the internet and it said it was a scam mortgage company.

I just got a call on my cell phone from 212-565-0001 I don't know this area code or this # so I did not answer. They left no message.
I see by others it looks to be some refinance scam. I live in FL & the area code in not from Fl as far as I know.
I don't answer my cell phone unless I know who it is calling like a friend or a job I applied for than I see the name of my friend or I recall knowing the # from a job interview I had. I would advise others to do the same if you don't know the # don't answer it.

Just answer it and put them on hold. Then get a cup of coffee or go to lunch.

Automated message about mortgage. I'm sooo glad I'm on the National Do Not Call list. I get so many of these calls, mostly on my house phone. The Do Not Call List doesn't work at all. I've reported so many of these calls but obviously nothing gets done.

This is Google NY's fax number. It appears that some mortgage scammers have hijacked it to make impromptu calls to a list of phone numbers they scammed from somewhere else. Don't waste your time answering. They are likely a hoax. Maybe contacting Google in NYC will prompt them to investigate this fraud.

Didn't answer the call - they didn't leave a voice mail.
| Alicia 2013-08-25 14:17:48 Unknown |
No voice mail, & I don't answer calls where I don't recognize the number.

It's a mortgage company and I don't have a mortgage. They probably use a robotic autodialer that calls everyone.
| JHM 2013-08-15 22:39:52 Unknown |
They dial ALL of the numbers in a particular area code. They don't have your name and number, they just "war dial" every number there could possibly be in a particular area code hoping to hit a few stupid people dumb enough to give them what they are looking for.
There is NO such animal as a "super secret squirrel" phone number. An "unlisted number" or a "private number" is simply one that isn't published in a directory - anyone can call your number so long as they manage to dial the right combination of digits.
So, how did they get your number? It was the next sequence of digits on their auto-dialer.
919-555-1212
919-555-1213
919-555-1214
919-555-1215
and so forth and so on until they run out of all possible 919 numbers - then it's on to the next area code.
This scammer is faking the number to a Google office in NY. This is one of their fax numbers.
The baboon that called me played a robo-call about "Obama Home help" for some type of mortgage modification scam they are trying to run.
If you get called by these crooks - RUN is what you should do.
Most of these scammers are outside of the USA, so they could care less about the Do Not Call List. It is pretty much unenforceable against them. Not so for the companies INSIDE the USA that are BUYING these "leads" from this scammer and then following up on them.
ALWAYS - if you are on the DNC List - POST A COMPLAINT. It is the only way to get these idiots caught and hopefully slow them down a little.
