These guys have been calling me, say I owe some money, I do not owe any one any money.
Funny thing is they want to know your DOB and address at the very beginning, if they are collecting debt they should know that already..
they have promised to mail a hard copy of the debt, lets wait and see what happens.

but going from experience posted here, I suspect it is just a scam..

Its the law period! The FDCPA is pretty explicit on that!

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer?s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

Its also the law:

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

Debt Collector
They are a scam!  I checked my credit report--nothing in collections. Zero.  When I called them they wanted personal information including my social security number to reveal the nature of the debt & the debtor.  I declined & told them to stop calling me.  This happened six months ago and they just started up again.  Credit report is clean. It is the law in California that collection agencies must provide you with written proof of your debt within five days of first contacting you.  I have not received a SINGLE piece of mail regarding this debt.  Wouldn't the original business I owed the money to have sent me at least one bill before sending it to collections?  I requested written proof six months ago, guess what? I'm still waiting.  I think they are counting on people freaking out & revealing personal information.  It's a scam!  Watch out,

CMRE just called again and a clown by the name of Xochitl started questioning me. I told her that I had filed Chapter 7 BK (as instructed by my attorney), gave her my attorney's name, and that if CMRE called again, I would sue. She continued to question me and I hung up on her.

I think this a SCAM.  I've been getting multiple calls from this number every week, for weeks now.
I have NO overdue debts or medical bills.

I get a pre-recorded message asking for a person who is not me and that I do not know, so that they can collect a debt.
Then it says press 1 if you are this person and press 5 if you are not.  I hang up.
DONT give them any info.  Just hang up, even if they have your name.

Instead, call the company or hospital directly that you owe money to and find out if your debt has been transferred to a debt collector and get the contact info from the hospital or company directly.

The most frustration thing is how to get them to STOP CALLING!
I'M SICK OF ALL THESE EMAIL, PHONE & CREDIT CARD SCAMMERS.
Go get a REAL JOB or start a REAL COMPANY like the rest of us.

Voice of Treason is a collection troll passing misinformation.  It's the newest scheme by these pigs to intimidate people, so the rest of us need to stand up and confront them in these forums.  Collectors can't be hired to recover a debt once it's been charged off and the creditor has written it off their taxes, so Voice of Treason is flat out wrong.  Many of these operations are owned by dishonest Russian, Persian or Israeli thugs running boiler rooms packed with welfare mothers and illegal aliens.

As to judgements, these are phony threats.  I've dealt with this nonsense for longer than most of you have been alive.  All these morons can do is call repeatedly, so if you have CID and don't recognize the number, never answer the phone.  You'll end up frustrating them instead.

You're one of the few who understands that owners of charged off accounts have written them off their taxes, so any attempt to collect these debts by them is a fraud.  "Collectors" who purchase those debts aren't doing so to pay the original creditor and should be notified their attempts to collect will result in notifications to the IRS.  In effect, we can level the playing field by letting these scumbag agencies deal with the ruthless, partisan b*****ds of government.

They called and asked me to give them my personal information or they would not tell me which Medical Bill they were calling about.  I pay any Medical Bills and I don't give out my personal info on the phone to someone whom I do not know. After I told her I do not give out my personal information, she said, ok then I cannot talk to you.  What does this mean. I am very annoyed.

charge off has nothing to do on whether or not you owe a debt. Yes they recover a PORTION of their money through taxes, not all of it. You are right they cannot garnish SSI, but if they get a
Judgment and you own property they can place a lien or seize your property (depending on your state) you will NOT win in court because of a chargeoff. I do not know where you got that information. Any of you who are under 65, working and own property do not listen to this person. They obviously have no intent of paying their bills and do not care about their credit. Selling of a debt is completely legal. its actually in the contract you sign. they can collect on and sue on purchased debt. and just so you know CMRE is not a debt buyer, they are hired collectors. meaning there was no sale or transfer of the debt. you should get educated before you give people advice on how to ruin their lives. Thank you
