They're a collection agency now

This is not a scam.  213-291-0288 is from a debt collector.  They are required to verify that the person they are speaking to is the person with the debt they are calling in regards to.  If a debt is not paid, legal action including a law suit in a court of law, is a course of action the debt collector can take to collect a debt.

Today I learned that the mother of an acquaintance in another location had the same experience. Apparently these folks prey on the elderly.

First they claimed to be FedEx with a bad package  label--said had package with rebate check and asked for info. Gave me return address Peerless Communications. How would FedEx know what was in package?
Called FedEx directly. no such package.
Then they called claiming to be sender, "Peerless Communications" with rebate. I asked for more info on company. The said mistake and hung up. Then got call claiming to be VerizonCustomer service. I never had account with that company.
Then I called Peerless Communications at the phone no. of Peerless call and asked for accounting dept. Guy acted puzzled, said he was one-man company on eastern US (wrong coast) and his website showed local commo installer company.
Finally found this site. I have no past due bills, lawsuits, or outstanding judgements. Looks like a scam to me.

Been in the same boat you're in...for over 20 years.  Don't take them seriously because these are the lowest form of scum.  Better yet, blow off all your bills (except a mortgage, if you have one).  All these idiots can do is keep calling you, so never answer the phone.

Sounds like a Persian, Iranian or Russian shakedown scam.  Their phone bank is probably a boiler room filled with welfare mothers and gang members reading from a script.  Hope they call some Muslims who find their address and pay them a visit.  KA-BOOOOOOM!

Answered the call and some guy named Paul said I owed $12,000 from a lawsuit in Iowa! I live on the West Coast and never visited Iowa. When I told him this he threated to report me to the Feds for fraud. What a scam!!!

Yeah I got this call like 6 times, and I am barely a legal adult and had not a job yet.

Yup...got the call today, with my unemployment for 3 years, my delinquencies with trying to meet bills and obligations, this call kinda rattled my nerves and got me worried.  Since you all posted these comments and I know, I've been doing my best...I'm not even going to reply or worry about this so called, Scam.

Just received a call from this number. The man said his name was Don Mac and was a private investigator. Said he just ran a background check on me and that I was being named in a complaint. The complaint was being filed in Riverside County and I must call them right away. What a crock!

They called me today saying the same thing.

THis is totally ascam said i was going to be arrested! would not provide me with any info.

Did they have your name and information?

Its not just you! They keep calling our cell and found a land line number for family members!  They have changed amounts they claim we owe twice already and say stuff like a civil suit is being filed and a warrant is being issued in our county...and that we are in contempt for failure to reply!  They are ridiculous...they answer their phone "check services" or "investigations".  The scary thing though is that they have name/number/and social security number...but keep trying to confirm birthdates.  They also have wrong employment information...they are just PHISHING for information...these LOW life pieces of $hit!!!!!!!!!! They even ask if we intend to remedy the amount due before further action is taken -- HA yeah right...not giving them anything...not falling for this trap!  If they keep calling...you should call the FTC (Federal Trade Commission to file a complaint) and also register your number on the National Do Not Call Registry.

They call saying something about some kind of legal matter.  Is not me and would like for them to stop calling me.

WHEN I CALL THIS NUMBER BACK THEY DO NOT IDENTIFY THEMSELVES - JUST SAY "CUSTOMER SERVICE" AND NOTHING ELSE
