This Miss O'Keefe person even called my brother who, of course, was very concerned and confused, as was I!  Apparantly, she claims that I am the primary party of interest in some pre-trial investigation...wtf? really? I have zero dealings with anyone in PA, let alone any legal issues. I was started to get really worried so I am very glad I didn't call the woman but instead did some research and, lookie what I found: this site and guess what? it's a big scam!
thank you so much for being here!

This number called and said she was an attorney and that I would be taken to court for a payday loan, but if I can pay by Friday they can stop it. Is this true?

I received a call from Ms. Okeefe's office regarding a debt. She wanted me to make payment arrangements or face legal action. I asked her for a letter to prove the validity of the collection; she said she would email me a letter. I stated that anyone can concoct an email letter and that i would require one via mail. She said that was no acceptable and hung up on me. I am attempting to contact the original source of said debt to get more information.

This scammer has called me twice now-i am not stupid. I hear them trying to pretend type on their keyboards in the background. Anyu legitimate law office would have a secretary answering their calls when you call back. I called from a private number and no one answered. This is not real. Nor do i have ANY debts that need to be collected my credit report is clean. They must have gotten my information from somewhere- probably the third time now i have people harassing me. I wish there is some way we can get someone involved to stop it. There are people out there who get scared into giving them their money. I am not sure how they get away with it. Don't give them your information. Especially if they don't send you anythign in writing validating your debt and the amount owed to the ORIGINAL creditor. If they send you that, contact the original creditor and find out which collection agency has your account. Michelle Okeefe isn't even popping up on a web search- this number is a based near or around Philadelphia. Don't trust.

These people have called my work the last two days...yesterday a woman claiming to be from a Michelle O'Keefe's office in the prelitigation department...she didn't leave her name about a legal claim and to call their office. Today my co-worker just took a message and the person told my coworker they were my attorney...that happens to be calling from a Pennsylvania number and we are several states over...not likely!
Reporting to the appropriate authorities as well as the FTC...they are not allowed to misrepresent themselves such as this....http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre18.shtm

What practices are off limits for debt collectors?

Harassment. Debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse you or any third parties they contact. For example, they may not:
use threats of violence or harm;
publish a list of names of people who refuse to pay their debts (but they can give this information to the credit reporting companies);
use obscene or profane language; or
repeatedly use the phone to annoy someone.

False statements. Debt collectors may not lie when they are trying to collect a debt. For example, they may not:

falsely claim that they are attorneys or government representatives;
falsely claim that you have committed a crime;
falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit reporting company;
misrepresent the amount you owe;
indicate that papers they send you are legal forms if they aren?t; or
indicate that papers they send to you aren?t legal forms if they are.

Debt collectors also are prohibited from saying that:
you will be arrested if you don?t pay your debt;
they?ll seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages unless they are permitted by law to take the action and intend to do so; or
legal action will be taken against you, if doing so would be illegal or if they don?t intend to take the action.

Debt collectors may not:
give false credit information about you to anyone, including a credit reporting company;
send you anything that looks like an official document from a court or government agency if it isn?t; or
use a false company name.

Unfair practices. Debt collectors may not engage in unfair practices when they try to collect a debt. For example, they may not:
try to collect any interest, fee, or other charge on top of the amount you owe unless the contract that created your debt ? or your state law ? allows the charge;
deposit a post-dated check early;
take or threaten to take your property unless it can be done legally; or
contact you by postcard.

Maybe if enough people start complaining about these people/companies/etc....the FTC will start doing something about it!
