Keep in mind if they have the proper documentation and the debt is not time barred, they can sue to collect.  While there are a lot of scammers out there using bogus debt claims, especially for Pay Day Loans, if you have gotten behind on a debt you owe and the original creditor has either sold it off or contracted with a collection agency, they can sue you provided the statute of limitations for suing to collect has not expired.  If you are uncertain, request a debt validation notice via US Mail. If they refuse then they are in violation of FDCPA and probably trying to scam you.

Collection agency....They are small time..If they calling you behind a bill keep in mind they can't do s**t. Tell em to F**K off.
