I got a call with a recorded voice asking if I was soandso, which was not recognizable since it had two names playing at once.   The recording asked me to put the call on hold and before it could complete I hung up.  This is a new twist to an old scam to use my cell number to make long distance calls on my bill.

No robot will get me to do anything to aid in their scam.  If anyone has any idea where the 248 area code is please post a note with the name.

i hate these people. they call multiple times a day, looking for the previous owner of my home phone number.  i've told them numerous times, called them back, etc... and they always say they will update their information, but they never do. they don't seem to believe that i don't know the guy. one even asked me "are you sure??"

and they're not the only ones - the guy at this number before me has some wicked credit issues, as i now know.

because it comes up as "unknown caller", we've taken to singing "this is the ring of the Unknown Caller" to the tune of the Doors' "Unknown Soldier".

Alan,
Since you are a debt collector, maybe you can tell me if it is legal for a company to "buy" a charged off debt.  COs are considered finished transactions, aren't they?  Thanks.

I just received a call from this number that came up as an unknown name and they asked for my husband. I told her he was at work and she said her name was Mary, left an 800 number and an extension. When I asked her what this was regarding, she said personal business. So I don't what the heck this is, but these calls are getting annoying...especially since I am on the DNC call list.

No legitimate collection agency would harrass you, and have ABSOLUTELY NO RECORDS TO BACK UP THE CLAIM. If I owed something, which I do not, I would want to see the bills, and payments, etc to back it up. Why would I give some JERK 4,000 for a "claim" when they cannot provide me with anything. Would I give a stranger 4,000 just for the heck of it because they say, oh, you owe it, but I have no record of it. THIS IS A SCAM. IGNORE THEM. I think they aquire credit info on people, and if you have less than perfect credit, they figure you are an easy target.

These people are horrible. Firstly, they "claim" I still owe on a credit card that was closed out over 7yrs ago which I do not. Even if I did, its over the 7yr threshold. I called the credit card company directly, they say it must have been so many years ago, because they do not even have my social security number as ever having been a customer.  The weird thing is also, I do remember paying off the card, I never charged more than 1,000 dollars on it, but yet they say I owe over 4,000.I asked them to give me the original bill, that I want to see an itemized bill from the credit card company and any payments on the account, they yelled at me saying they could not do that, and to hand over the 4,000 or they would sue.

To date, I still get the phone calls, once every couple of months. I am at my wits end, and I am tired of being threatened. I reported them to the FCC, but they did not do anything. If anyone knows how I can stop them, please help me:-(  Again, the original credit card company actually TOLD me to report them.

They call at odd hours of the night. It's a message to call them. It is beginning to be very irritating.

Be very careful about making any payments on old debts.  Debt does have a statute of limitations, and once it's expired you should never try to pay it or even acknowledge it.  Shady collectors will call about an expired debt (i.e. debt which you are not legally obligated to pay) and offer to "settle" for some fraction of the original amount.  When you make a payment, the debt becomes "re-activated" and they can then file lawsuits, ding your credit report etc.  Once they can legally collect, they will conveniently forget about your settlement, will try to collect the whole amount and tack on their own penalties and fees besides.  The idea is that the statute of limitations depends on the time since the last transaction occurred, and when you make a payment you essentially reset the clock on the statute of limitations; this is why it's sometimes called "zombie debt", because it resurrects dead debt.

have had several(100+) calls from this number.  they have claimed to be lawyers hired to collect for unpaid bills.  apparently they buy collection accounts and charge aprox. $500-$600 for collection fee.  I have a dispute with SBC over $120 that i dont feel I owe. Ive had the dispute for 5 years, and they claim that SBC sold them the collection rights and that the amount they want is over $700.($120 + their fee)  they also put bad marks on my credit report for not giving them anything.

This caller has been calling me for months and never leaves a message.  I don't know how they got ahold of my restricted number in the first place since I never give it out.  I don't owe money to anyone and I'm not answering this call.  When will cell phones have to capability to block callers like land line phones???

This outfit (and others) purchases old debt for pennies, that should have run its course under the "Statute of Limitations' act in most states. I believe a creditor has about 6 years to collect a legitimate debt, (including a levy on the goods sold,) unless the State legislature has passed some sort of enabling act to extend the collection time for an additional period of time.(Cars, furniture, houses, appliances, can be repossessed. Credit card debt is more tricky.)
Through fear, harassment, and threats etc., they are able to get a percentage of monies as claimed owed, but they often don't know who the original creditor is. Or what even the original amount is. Nor are they able to produce records of such a claimed debt. It is the old adage of "where there's smoke there is fire."

Remember as stated elsewhere there is debt in the BILLIONS OF DOLLARS so what is recovered by them is important to someone. (Their company!). these agents work in what is known as 'boiler rooms'. Dozens or hundreds of people are doing this work, at a site.
The debt has usually been written off by the lending company. They write off bad debt against their income.

If you want, you can always settle for pennies too. It all depends on the situation. It wouldn't hurt to record conversations from time to time as back up when you file a complaint against the agency. Keep a record as best as you can.

Check the laws in your state or the state where the debt was incurred.
Remember even the Fed's are hiring collection agencies to improve their tax recovery yield. But there are limitations.....as to how long such an attempt can go on. (in my view)
Don't be afraid to negotiate, but negotiate with someone who can make the decision on their side and get it in writing.

Hope this insight is helpful.

Here's some guys I've spoke to before, they are legitimate debt collectors, however they are guilty of using the strong-arm tactics we've most likely all seen before.

The call with some personal information (as they have your credit report) and of course they want more.

My big problem with these guys is they won't take no for an answer. So here's the initial info:

Caller ID Info:
Toll Free Call
1-800-772-1413

The man calling calls himself: James Tatum
When asked, what this was in regards to: Personal Business

Upon the second call today (which I missed) I returned the call and requested a supervisor. They gave me an Account Manager: Dennis Pizza

ha! I just got a call from them, called them back. said it was about an old SBC bill - I've NEVER - EVER had SBC phone service.  She recited the last 4 digits of the Soc. Sec. she had and it wasn't even me!  These people are pathetic.  She said she would take my number off their records.  If I get a call from them again, I'm raising a huge stink.

I just received a call on my cell phone from this number.  They used a previous name that I haven't had in 7 1/2 years since I remarried.  Who is this company and where did they get my cell phone number?  Not calling back since I have no Idea why they would be calling me either. States his name is agent Edwards and for me to call 1-800-781-4401 ext 1782  I don't think so.

They (some collection agency) first called my cell number and didn't leave a message - then later called the company I work for and asked to be transfered to me... which  is  terrible. They where calling about a $35 payment on a retail credit card and asked ifI had made the payment, to which I told them "Maybe..." - not wanting to give them ANY information. The women said she would make a note in her computer that I made the payment... I just hung up on her at that point... very odd...
