THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR POSTING ON THIS SITE. I TOO POSTED AN ITEM FOR SALE ON CRAIGS LIST AND DAVID THE OCEANOGRAPHER RESPONDED WITHIN MINS TO MY POSTING. TODAY MY CASHIERS CHECK IS SUPPOSED TO BE DELIVERED VIA UPS AND HE TOLD ME FOR THE FIRST TIME ABOUT SENDING A CHECK VIA WESTERN UNION FOR THE MOVERS. IT STARTED TO SOUND FISHY TO ME SO GOOGLED THIS NUMBER AND THESE POSTS ARE WHAT I FOUND. I AM VERY THANKFUL TO HAVE FOUND THIS INFORMATION.

Same scammer MO being used in November, only "Robert" the text-only marine engineer wanted the extra money sent through Western Union to a person in Ohio, and after that his movers would pick up what you posted for sale on Craig's List. The check was from a local technology company, only the bank showed the account had insufficient funds. Punk. There's a circle of hell for people who steal money, but an even hotter circle for people who waste your time.

Same thing happened to me; little did he know I was VERY familiar with the military and being out to sea. He said his name was David. He sent me a check for 2,480 to purchase furniture and give the remainder to a moving company. He told me to deposit the check into MY account. Clearly I already knew something was not right. I called all numbers and they were set up as voice mails.
Here's how I changed the scam back on him....I text him stating I was going to take my portion and purchase another cashier's check for the remaining balance and send it certified to the movers he is working with. I text him requesting the specific address and he replied send it Western Union. The final decision: I ended the conversation with "AYE AYE Shipmate"

One of my favorite parts of this scam is they're "A marine engineer at sea" and can't phone you, but they can send you snail mail? They contact you by text, but then say they can't text? Right? Craigslist and Kijiji are not eBay. Not how these thing were set up to be used. Local only, cash only, in person. Put it in your ad.
| Glad I searched his number 2013-07-28 06:22:13 Unknown |
Just got a text from him wanting to buy our dryer we posted up on Craigslist... Of course he can't text because he's out at sea working as a marine engineer wants to pay via cashier check... Glad I googled his number and found this site, thanks Wanna Be Scam Artist for looking out!

Ditto for David, didn't fall for his out to sea as a marine engineer. Asked for a photo and he started explains his undercover BS! 500 for table and the rest for the mover ;))

Got text message from "david" who wanted to purchase furniture I listed on Craigslist...says he can't call and can only text cuz he's out to sea. He says he's a marine engineer. Wants to send money order for furniture with an extra amount to covet cost of movers... Once you pay the movers the excess money he wants sent to an account via Western union. Luckily I found this before proceeding. Once I called him out on his lil scam... Cat had his tounge ... David was silenced.

I too just received a text from David the Oceanographer wanting to buy my item on Craig's List. He went as far to also offered an additional amount to hold the item for him while his check was in process. Thanks for posting this info, I would have gotten involved with this otherwise. Buyers beware !!
| Wow! They are at it again! 2013-06-19 01:33:20 Unknown |
I recently have been texting only a "David" the oceanographer for a purchase on craigslist via cashiers check and to deal with movers also! Red flag went up in my mind, expecially when the text would not answer any just chatting conversation questions regarding his interesting job...location...time zone...! Going to warn others also. Glad I saw this when my husband entered their number to search it out.

Forgot to mention, according to the postal service, the express mail was sent from Greenwood Indiana, 46142, the money was to be sent to Indiana as mentioned earlier, the phone number originates from Indiana but when I called the Attorney General's Office in Indiana the woman said that this is not from the state of Indiana. Confused but scamming is not my business. Have filed a fraud complaint with USPS and Hawaii's Attorney General's Office and posted this warning with 800 notes.
Aloha and have a great day!!!

Received text from this person, wanted to purchase my entertainment center which I listed on craigslist for $500. Sends a fake cashier's check for $2,470.00 and wants me to send the rest of the money "Western Union" to a Jeffrey Griffin, Indianapolis, IN. 46256 ASAP. This was to pay for "movers" Mega Lift. Searched internet, no such moving company in US. When I received checked, called IBC Bank in TX., no money in that account! Beware, although I lost nothing (shouldn't say that; my time and energy is priceless!!) I just don't want anyone else getting hurt from this scam.
