No, according to other sites that report numbers excel says its a scam.  Don't "pay" them anything.

unknown caller left no voice mail also got a call a day before from631-652-1575 no voice mail called both numbers back and got recording that the number is not correct.

I got a call from this number, I think this is the first time. I don't have long distance so I could not call it back. When I picked up, there was dead silence on the line, then a click, then I hung up. It's been an hour, and they did not call back. I read other reports about this number being related to Exel, which is my electric company, so I will call them.

301-223-0800 has become my enemy. They call my son's prepaid cellphone and have been told numerous

times over the last 3 months that the person they are calling - Valero Campo - does not live here nor do we

know who that is! We have asked nicely and not so nicely that they stop calling and we have been assured

they have removed the cellphone number but they called again today. I spoke to Debbie@Xcel's customer

service# 1-800-895-4999 and she contacted the 301-223-0080 number and was assured by "Kim" that they

ARE Xcel and that they have removed our cellphone number. It was claimed that the call is a courtesy call to

remind deadbeats to pay their overdue bill. Our family doesn't have any overdue debts and they need to STOP

CALLING! If they call again after I have assured it would stop (like I was told today and last week), I will

make further posts here and elsewhere. Xcel's customer service rep (Debbie) wasn't too confident that this

call center was part of Xcel but has assured me if they call us again we can contact her and she will see what

can be done to stop the calling.

I'm pretty sure this is some sort of scam. My bill is payed up for the next couple of months. Just got a bill in the mail with a credit of a couple hundred. I think I started getting these calls after I got sucked into a scam that I thought was Kaplan University. Not sure if it has any relation.

It's Xcel Energy.  Exactly how does "not legit" sound like?  I'm curious!

I have not used xcel in over 14 years! so I know this is a total B.S! scam!
We don't even live in a state which uses xcel! LOL!

They called today no message.  When I tried calling back all I got was a busy signal.  Traced the number it is some cell number.  I wouldn't trust this number at all.  I say this because my bill is not overdue, it was actually due today and its been paid.

Interesting considering 301 is a Maryland area code, and Xcel is a regional utility company serving the upper Midwest.

Rcvd call from this number on 9/17, on my cell phone, one of those "computerized calls" that sounds like a robot, telling me we were late on our Xcel Energy bill. Hung up after listening to message. Did not call back, it seemed fishy to me. After reading these other posts, I'm going to call Xcel & ask them if this is a legit service they are using.

It's legit. I called Excel to verify. It's their claims department, and they get their information 24 hours late, so their call may be based on a late payment that was paid the previous day, as in my case. Either way, they're obnoxious and really need to stop calling me. Jerks.

This number called me and left no message. I called back and was on hold for 15 min trying to speak to someone. I was never connected. I knew it was a scam because I don't even have and account with Xcel.

It's a scam. Don't believe that it's not. Use your common sense! Do not give these people any personal information. Call excel yourself using the number on your bill.

THIS IS NOT A SCAM!   If you've received a call from this number then either you are LATE paying your Xcel (electric) bill (whether you know it or not!) or someone has used your telephone number as their own, and Xcel Energy is calling for them.

Sure enough- Xcel Energy.  Same story- answered the call (which, on the caller-ID said "Call Center, MD" - nobody responded to my "hello?".

Thank you for the help with the "888" call-back #, because I was able to call them back and make a payment, thus avoiding my electricity being turned-off.

It's Xcel Energy. They've outsourced their collections department to a call center and no longer have their employees do it anymore. So it's legit. Now I need to go and pay my bill.  :)

I recieved calls from this number also. It is because of late xcel. it takes up to 5 business days for the payment to get to the automated system that makes the calls. Its a computer like everything else and your number is on a call list. If you ANSWER the call, and listen to the recording, it is against the law for them to call back less than 24 hours. Try answering and tell them i'll pay tommorow, you wont get a call the rest of day

I got a call today as well but when I answered nobody responded to me.  When I called back I was connected to Xcel and my bill was over due cause my auto pay did not go into effect when I thought it did. This number is legit

I just got a call from this number.  They did not leave a message.  I called them back and they have a recording to sound like Xcel Energy but I'm pretty sure it's not legit.

Xcel was called and they verified that this their consumer care center's number. They used to call after your bill was 30 days late but now they have been doing is sooner. Ours was 2 days late. The payments are processed at 8 pm but they said it may take 3-5 days to clear your bank account.

Only call the 800 number for Xcel Energy regarding your bill.  Xcel Energy confirmed there was a server error with a former collection agency it used to work through (in Maryland).  This hiccup in the server updated all files of Xcel customers.  Part of the server error is that the number being shown on your caller id shows the "trunk" (?) number of where it comes from when it's supposed to show an 800 number or likewise.  Call Xcel, they got a hold of security right away and got the answers for me almost immediately about the issue and confirmed many complaint calls regarding this number.

I expressed concern about identity theft, the service rep. at Xcel I talked to did digress about how personal information can be stolen in multiple ways and what to watch out for since it did happen to him once (i.e. cloning of your cell phone, how a thief could have done this without breaching into Xcel files just by knowing your number and your energy service company based on region).
