Debt Collector
Got a week or two's worth of these calls. At first I was nervous, which is natural, but then the more I thought about it, I relized it was crap. What legit fraud investigation unit is going to 'robocall' you? None. I got a call towards the third week saying something like, "This is the last time we will call. You need to contact us immediately... blah blah blah.. " Iwas like, great, they're going to stop. Then about two weeks later it started up again. Bummer.

Repeat calls saying a fraud case is being filed against me in my county but never says my name or the name of the county. I am getting a caller blocking app from my phone provider ASAP. Ridiculous crap to put up with.

I have been receiving at least 3 calls per day for the past week.  Same thing, a recording saying I'm the prime suspect of a lawsuit filed in the county and says to press 1 to talk to an investigator.  The ring sounds like an overseas ringtone.  After letting it ring 6 times, no one answers so I hang up.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I get these calls every 6 months or so. When I have the time I engage them and "go along" with what they are "selling" but never admit to anything. After they have given me their pitch, I counter by asking them to send me a copy of the original documents (which they must legally do if they are legitimate). This is usually enough to get them irritated. Once they get irritated, they lose their composure and get angry and start threatening me with jail time and arrest warrents and job loss. But through the entire conversation they never agree to send me a copy of the documents I request. I know I am not going to get them to stop what they are doing, but if I can keep them occupied and waste several minutes of their time (I have actually had some argue with me for over ten minutes) then that may be one less person they can convince to send them info. For them, time is money, so I try to waste as much as I can.

FYI - These people and simply SCUM trying to get some unsuspecting person to call them back so they can
rip someone else off with their fraudulent schemes. Never call them back. They should be investigated and thrown in Jail. Maybe the scum will read this blog and see what people think of them, not that they would care.

I'm pretty unhappy right now because I keep receiving calls form this number saying i'm the prime suspect in a case. then they say press one to speak with the investigator. I press one just to tell them not to call again and it hangs up.

I called them from my landline and got a voicemail that said I'd reached the fraud unit, but not saying where or anything else. I left a message say DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER.

I'm supremely put off by them calling.

I received the same message also, didn't say my name but said I was involved in a fraud investigation and to contact Leslie Hughes which was a recording.  If this was true my county would have served papers and call would not have came from MD.

Same as all the rest.  Didn't say my name and involved in fraud in my county. Press 1 and talk to investigator. Interesting in that in CA they would serve you locally and not call from a number in MD.

I got a call from the number 301-358-9346. I did not answer it. I get a lot of dumb calls so if I don't recognize the number I don't answer it. This time though there was a message left. A lady stating she is leslie hughes with the fraud investigation unit and I had a case filed in the county today.  Please return the call immediatly. Well first off I live in the county where the court house is and where the main sheriffs office is. Pretty sure if I had to call back immediately I would have herd from someone in my hometown or I would of been served papers. It is very frustrating these people can get away this crap.

Recieved a call on Friday as a voicemail on two occasions stating that it was Leslie Hughes, and I was the primary of a Fraud investigation, the second call stated that they were Fraud Investigation, and to leave them a message with a case number??  Really what case number?  The second call came from 301-654-0905, same people.  Really I think they are scammers hoping that they will get someone to get them banking information.....crazy.  By the way, they dont even say your name.

Also received call stating I am the primary suspect in a fraud case today in "the county" and that I should call back.  I can't imagine what this is for - not taking it seriously.  I'm pretty sure if someone is actually being charged with fraud that they receive some sort of legal document saying so!  lol...  annoying.  I get calls like this all the time.

Received a call stating fraud charges for taking a loan out in 2012.  Reference my email and an account that I has been opened since May 2010.  Scammers?  Reporting to Attorney General stating cash advance taken from a website  from Cash Advance.  Get these calls about every 3 to 6 months.  Frustration.
