Caller ID said "Farrell John" with phone number 301-762-6650 called this afternoon at 2:27PM (eastern) answering machine picked up they left no message.

I think I've been confusing some people because I recently had just the Who Song "Who Are You" playing as my answering machine message. Just that, the chorus bit from the opening credits of CSI. I used to ask nicely if you are a business please leave you company name and phone number bozos like these never do.

I think they called yesterday or maybe even on Sunday. I seem to recall these bozos calling a few months back.

It is so tempting to mark this as a "Prank Call"

I have recently moved to MD and new in country. Got a call from this unknown number with Caller ID said "Pol Protection fund".
I answered the call and there was a lady who asked for someone else and I said it's a wrong number. Then she said she was calling from police department and said things about how they are protecting community etc.. and said if I am ok to give some donation. She was speaking calmly and was sounding very genuine. So i said ok. She asked for my address and my name. she said she'll mail some forms to me and i will have to return them with the money which i agreed to pay ($15).
After hanging up with her, I thought to see what's this all about. And found this site.
and i feel i made a mistake here giving them my real address and name.
she didn't ask for money over phone though.. through credit card or anything else.
Is there any reason to be watch out for some unknown trouble?

Caller ID says John Farrell. I answered the call and I can hear noises like in a living room. Whoever it was, they hung up on me when I answered the phone. I am also on Do Not Call list. Doesn't seem to matter.

I've read about them and had them.  This time I answered the phone "FBI--Los Angeles Bureau".  The caller seemed dazed by it.  I hung up.

Just got the call this evening.  Had read Dennis' post.  I was, unfortunately, not too nice to the caller.  How do they get around the DO NOT CALL list, or haven't I added them to it and if so, please let me know how to do it.

They took in $6 mil+?!?  Barnum was right, too bad it cost that much to prove it in 2008.

I'm just indicating that I live in Maryland to show how widespread this scam is.  My phone # is unlisted.  How do these scammers get the phone #s?

Thanks, Dennis for the info.  I always get calls from that number, which shows up as John Farrell on the caller ID.  He never leaves a message and the address is in Potomac, MD, a upscale neighborhood (I grew up in the same neighborhood). At first I thought it might have been someone from my old HS (the 762 extension is from that neighborhood), but they never left a message.  Now I know why!

Dude called all sweetness and light and crap, hitting me with the guilt, "We've had a number of police die this year in traffic related incidents," then the appealing to the good in me, "...and I urge you to slow down when on the road..." and then asked for money.

I suggested he send me some literature. He responded by telling me it would cost $15 to have it sent to me. Choking on laughter, I said, "I don't donate money over the phone like this." As I said "this," he hung up the phone.

I will NEVER offer credit card information to a stranger who calls my home unsolicited. It's just a bad idea.

How To Stop These Calls
1) Contact your State's Attorney's General's Office, Charity Division.
2) Request help dealing with Commercial Fundraiser(s), and Charities harassing you.
3) You will need Both the Commercial Fundraiser's and Charity's contact information, name, address, and phone number. <Provided below>
4) Request the AG formally request these organizations, do not contact you, and do not sell/trade/transmit your personal information.

Wait 1 month, if they continue to call, contact the AG?s office again, and request further assistance.

If you know the charity?s name and I will post their contact information: Name, address, phone # of both the Commercial Fundraiser(s), and the Charity Associated. That you will need in order for the AG's office to take action.

I only check these every few months, so feel free to look them up your self. The Secretary of State of Washington state's charity search website: http://www.sos.wa.gov/charities/search.aspx You could also try www.CharityNavigator.org

All these b*****ds are related scammers, calling from different area codes including Alabama. If you people have noticed these cowards use a 1800 number to send spam faxes to your phone. Cowards beging their scamming job early in the morning trying to disburb and trap people with their scam. It is time to end their game once and for all but the problem is I dont know where these gutless parasites live. Once I know their locations, I'll take the right move and get them into so much trouble that they wont recover out of it.

So called charity or not, If you ask them to take your number off of their list they are obligated to do so.  If they refuse or call again you have a right to sue them in small claims court.  Ask them to send you a copy of their do not call list, and they must under federal guide lines.

Someone who refused to identify himself called us today from 301-762-6650. He wanted to talk to me and refused to talk to my wife. The caller was rude.

Called received from this particular number.  ID shows on caller-id, but they only ask for one specific person.

I got the same call from John Farrell.
Just ask for badge number, full name, superior name and organization.
Verify with organization.

Probably he'll just hang up and take you off the call list right away before you can finish ask for the info.

I've been asking to be put on their do not call list for 7 years and it hasn't happened yet!  Not so simple.

This number repeatedly calls my house. My policy is to never make any donation over the telephone to any organization which cannot demonstrate through public, audited records that at least 70% to 80% of its receipts go to registered and valid charities and causes. I suspect this guy is smart enough to maintain the lifestyle to which he has become accustomed on your nickel.
