For those not paying attention: the above post clearly state this is a number used to identify callers from different embassies around the world to call out with so as to protect the true Identity of where the call is coming from  not just the state department all though I am sure they are part of the collective of users.
Many Federal employees and their embassy personnel would use this number to call the states if you received a questionable call it is probably either because they dialed the number wrong, or when you answered they where expecting someone else to do so. If the number calls you early i the morning or late at night locally it is probably because the call originated in another part of the world which is not on your time zone.

This is US Dept of State number. Its been used by US Embassies and also for some members of the agency in Washington to protect the agency. I work for the US Dept of State and that's how it works for this protected number. It is also used by the agency on some investigations.

This number just called me and a man, in a gruff voice, said "Hey, baby..." I asked him who was calling and he said, "I think I must have the wrong number." I certainly hope it wasn't the Dept of State. >.>

It is indeed a Department of State number used when someone calls from an American Embassy overseas. It shows up as a Maryland number, and cannot receive calls back. (My dad called me using this number, he works in an embassy in Asia.)

The caller ID said US Department of State. The person was located in Washington,DC and was asking for Louis Bates (wrong number). She said that person used to be working in Department of State in Arlington, VA. I guess this number is a real US Department of State phone number, Washington DC. They use this number to protect the security of the agency.

This number is a "quasi" (one way) number used by the Department of State.  It is a legitimate number which comes up when someone at an overseas US embassy calls the States.

I can confirm what Becky said.   It is an overseas US Embassy calling routing thru a MD number that will send, but not receive calls.

I got he call today and the caller ID said Dept of St. The caller was clearly on an overseas line and stated he was with the embassy in Peru.He wanted to asked me about some body armor I had purchased and wanted a recommendation. I have worked in government diplomatic positions before and I told him I was not going to discuss tactical equipment with a foreign government. He needed to follow proper channels.

I've got a call from 301-985-2070 , she spoke by Vietnamese( because I'm Vietnamese) , she said she just been in US 2 days and she was my ex-husband's friend . She said my ex-hus wanna send me a box , and asked my address . I belived in her and gave her my address . I really was considered and upset when I hung off phone . Did I make trouble for myself ? What can I do now? Please help me !

Anytime someone call to someone outside of the State Department a realistic, but fake number is generated which is what shows on your caller id. This is true for a number of US govt agencies.

If they're really trying to get hold of you, they'll call again.

this number is located in mexico city. its the department of state in the mexican embassy. i know this because i talk to a mr. thomas personally. its also a pager number. he helps with missing people cases.

I received a call from a Vietnamese woman (called herself Ly) claiming that she has a present for me from one my relative who lives in Viet Nam.  I gave her my address believing the story.  I hope this is not a scam to get my address for something serious.

How you know the phone number 301-985-0270 comes from oversea U.S embassy?

I received a call from 301-985-2070 last night at 10pm . She said she was a ex-husband's friend and my ex-husband asked her transfer a box to me. She knew my personal profile and she asked me about my present and my address which she can send me a box . I belived her and gave her my address . I was considered who she is when I hung off the phone . I really worried about that !She spoke Vietnamese and I though she worked for INS .

I believe this is a valid number used by the U.S. State Department, probably for embassy use.  It appears to be 100% legitimate.

caller left message said US EMBASY in Mexico City

I received another call from 301-985-2070.  This time someone was on the other end.  It was a friend assigned to an embassy in West Africa.  It appears that this is a legitimate Department of State number.

Answered call from 301-985-2070.  There was no one on the other end.  The caller id showed call was from Department of State.  I called number.  Recording said that number could not be completed as dialed.

I have a friend who works for Dept. of State out of the US and this number always comes up. It's not a "real number" it just a quasi number for embassys who for obvious reasons can't have thier number revealed.
