I work for the CG as a civilian.  Besides our home phone number and cell number to notify us (to try to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for) they also ask for a 3rd party contact. In case we had to leave our homes (flooding, hurricane or other disaster) and our cell phone dies, and they can't contact us then they want one more person they can call to see if we're alright. I put the phone number of my parents down too. They live about 3-4 hours west of here (I live near the coast) and that would be where I would retreat if this area had to be evacuated. Your son probably listed you. Even if he didn't retreat to your home, he would probably let you know he's alright and where he's at. So if the CG called you could let them know if he's OK and get a message to him if needed.

I'm in the Coast Guard.  This is a messaging system for accountability of CG members if there's a big disaster.  In case there's some kind of disaster and people don't show up to work, this computer sends messages out to every way of contacting people to try to tell them to come into work...

I got a call to my private cell phone from (304) 264-5185, but it was apparently a SMS (short message service) from the U.S. Coast Guard's Emergency "Warning System," addressed to someone else (not me), and not a spammer/scammer: They simply did NOT update their data bases, and were attemtpting to call a member of the Coast Guard regarding what I think was an alert about emergency weather conditions in his region. I tried calling them back but got a voice mail! Grr... LOL --However, I guessed that (304) 264-5100 was another extension, and guessed right, and the person at that extension was able to take a message to look into this and remove the wrong number & update their databases. MY CELL phone was prepaid, and used up my minutes -besides, this guy's life might have been in danger -so, their prompt attention might not only save my prepaid minutes but save their member's life as well.
