I keep getting calls from the number at work saying I owe money to a payday loan from 2008.  Yet, when I ask for information about this, they just keep say that I'm going to be arrested and they want to come to my job, etc.  Don't they have to provide me with written information of what this is all about?  I've already received calls from a similar "company" that turned out to be a scam.  They're all Indian or Pakistani, and you can bearly understand what they're saying.  Can anyone out there help me find out who this is or has anyone else gotten any calls from this phone number?

They say I got money from a website and I didn't.  They say I'm going to be arrested and fired.  I don't know what this is about.

This is a scam. This is being operated out of a call center somewhere overseas.

These people have hacked some database somewhere and have access to your information. I've yet to discover where they got the information from (for all I know it could be multiple sources), but they've got everything on you. Your name, address, phone number, bank account numbers, Social Security number, lists of previous employers, and even records on YOUR CHILDREN.

They are calling you claiming that you were issued a loan and that you are past due and that you need to take immediate action otherwise they will have police at your door within one hour to extradite you to California for a trial.

THIS IS A LIE.

They are using scare tactics to disarm you and get you to agree to what they're telling you.

So far, I have heard two different stories. One of which is where the caller asks you to wire the money immediately to their account, in which case you just sent your hard-earned money to some scammer and have no way of ever getting it back ever again. The other story is where the caller tells you that you need to write an apology letter (they actually tell you what to write, word-for-word), have it notarized, and fax it to them.

DO NOT FAX THEM AN APOLOGY

By faxing them an apology, you are ADMITTING GUILT. When you give them this letter, you are legally pleading guilty to any crimes they claim to be charging you for, at which point they CAN take you to court, and they have a confession letter from you that you cannot defend yourself from in court.

When you call this number from a home/cell phone, they seem to pick up within a few rings (no recording or anything). If you call from a 1-800 number (I called from work), they do not pick up.

Make sure that everybody you know is aware of this. Do not give these people any information. Do not agree to anything they request from you. Above all, remain calm. They may sound scary, and they are, but remember that they have no legal ability to arrest you or sue you as long as you refuse to cooperate with them.

I had them call and they got me with the jail thing and calling my work.
I did take a loan out and have not been able to pay it.  So I assumed this was a company with the Payday loan.
I sent an apology letter (notorized) and they took my debt information.
What the heck can I do now.
Someone help me please.   I think i just set myself up for a rip off, or identy theft????

I got a call from a number 810-676-161. That is what came up on my cell phone. I obviously couldn't call it back. They too left my a voice mail saying i had to have my lawyer or friend of myself call them back and said good luck. I do owe on a payday loan. So, I thought it was legit. But, had a feeling it wasn't when I realized everyone has an accent and it seemed like a call center. So, once i realized it was a scam I called back asking how they got two of my best friends name and my social security number. They hung up. I kept calling and finally after the third time he said he was going to use my information for more scams if I called again.

Got a call on my cell.  I returned this call, 3 times.  They are very mean and threatning.  I actually called my lawyer.  I have filed complaints with the attorney general, BBB, and with all of the local authorities.  If they call me again, they are gonna be served with a lawsuit from my attorney.  BIG SCAM!!!  However, watch you bank accounts.  They do have legitimate info on you.  Change all you passwords and accounts.

There are several collection agencies in the US that outsource to call centers in India.  They could be getting the personal information from the CREDIT REPORTING BUREAUS.  As a collection agency they have access to that information.

those calling about PAYDAY loans - are hackers - they have stolen info from PayDay loan websites. They use bogus names to sound like they are calling from government agencies.
these names are
US National Bank,
Federal Investigation Bureau,
US Legal Investigation Bureau,
Hopkins Law Office,
United Legal Processing,
Morgan Associates,
United Pay Services,
National Processing,
White Collar Crime Unit and many more. A new one is Dept of Crime Prevention

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

Reporting a phone call from 1-310-598-1768
These people called with a very heavy automated Indian accent- They call every hour and threaten us if we don't call or retained attny to call back asap then they would like to wish me good luck as "this situation" unfolds on me.  I have no idea what "this situation" is as they never mention that part.  These clowns will see pigs fly out of my butt before they get a return call. These calls are from losers.
