I got a call and I could not answer in time. I figured it was a carpet cleaning service BC I have gotten calls like this before.
I am on the DO NOT CALL list so let me tell you what I have done in the past -and it WORKED!
I was getting calls nearly every day on my cell phone. Asking to be taken off their list was useless. Therefore, the next time they called I answered the phone and listened to their pitch about carpet cleaning. I asked if they did commercial carpets like the one in my office. They said yes and I booked an appointment.
When the carpet cleaner guy showed up (with all his equipment and paperwork) I was very friendly and asked him for his name and identification. He gave me his first name only and told me he left his ID in the truck so I asked him to go get it. He was clearly not comfortable doing that and showed me the order form (which only stated a generic name and no address or contact info. Naturally the form was not filled in with an estimate because they never asked me how many square feet etc.!
That is when I got mean and told him that he worked for a company that is violating federal law and that I have already reported them to the FCC and the state attorney general. He looked very nervous but not surprised.
I told him to get out of my office and to tell his boss to take me off his calling list. I was not called again for nearly TWO YEARS!
Now that I am back on their list, I will send them on a wild goose chase by booking appointments for them to show up at what they believe will be a business or private residence but when they show up it will be a ploice station or local politicians house.
The only result I expect to get is for them to waste their time and money but imagine if we ALL did that to them!??! We would waste there time driving all over the city to bogus appointments - can't make any money doing that!
Sue 2011-06-06 20:45:32 Unknown
Left a msg re: carpet cleaning with no contact info but said to press 1 to schedule an appt or press 2 to be removed from the list (I think it wasn't meant as a voicemail, but to be played when I pick up the phone).
I like John's idea!! Think I will try something similar. Maybe send them to a house that has a pit bull in the front yard.
Eva 2011-06-06 20:45:32 Unknown
No message left here either. I will do what John suggested if i get anymore calls. All my voicemail service ID says for the company name is CALIFORNIA and that the number is based in Santa Monica. I can't stand solicitors!
Terminator 2011-06-06 20:45:32 Unknown
I know who is calling so I went to his office and beat the crap out of him. So people don't worry I dont think he will do this again. He has been Terminated :)
Jeff 2011-06-06 20:45:32 Unknown
@john that is no good idea. Think before you post has HELLO they can always check on the map make sure it is a residence and not a police or politician office haahha dumb idea. WHo knows maybe they read your idea? stupid?
Sick and Tired 2011-06-06 20:45:32 Unknown
These people are calling cell phones now. When you call back it says the number is no longer in service
John 2011-06-06 20:45:32 Unknown
@Jeff I can tell you from personal experience this works. If you understand how they built their business model you would realize why it works.
The people telemarketing you are not carpet cleaners - they are telemarketers that feed the leads to local carpet cleaning companies. They get paid by selling the lead - they have no interest in looking on a map! It is the local carpet cleaning companies that get hurt in this. Once that local carpet cleaning business gets burned they will sever their ties with the telemarketers and with no one to sell leads to,the telemarketers focus on another city.
BTW - if they call to confirm, who are they going to call? They are going to call me because that is the number they have on file. When I confirm the appointment they are going to show up!
These telemarketers are wasting our time and our money (by calling our cell phones). The local carpet cleaning companies know what is going on but they are willing to take the chance to get the job - after all - they did not break the law by telemarketing you!
Adopt this motto: DON'T GET MAD - GET EVEN! Besides, it is a helluva lot more fun! :-)
