Phone call came from 910-0157 with no area code. I was told they were calling from "Windows Service Centre" & my computer was sending messages. If I turn it on they could help fix it . I asked where they ( male voice with accent) were located & told " Ottawa" . When asked which computer , he gave me a number which was supposed to be my computer registration or something. I said i had to check & where could I call him back and was given 315-633-4050.  I said that was not an Ottawa area code  & he advised it was in New York. Imagine that!  Have a bit of fun with these people. String them along but dont give out any info. Waste their time.  I have received these calls at a relatives place & they don't even have a computer.

The scam is alive todate. One of the problems is that VISA and Mastercard know full well the situation. They admit  it and they are still accepting charges from them . The card companies claim that they cant do anything ??

Prank Call
This is the 4th call we have had in about 6 months.  The first time I checked with local police and was told that the number was connected to a scam.  The 2nd and 3rd times we informed the callers that they were a scam and not to call back.  Today the guy with the Indian accent, who goes by the name of Rick Wilson, kept insisting that it was not a scam and gave me the number again, in this way:  3156    33    40   50.  He can't even give the number correctly.  He claimed that it was Microsoft in New York City.

He is supposed to call back later.  Maybe I'll see if the police want to come and answer the call. :)

Salt Lake City.  this is the first call I have received of this type telling me I had a malicious virus and  he would help me get rid of the virus remotely. What a scam. more annoying than anything, I hope people are not giving these guys permission to roam around in their computers

I'll call you back once I verify you.

Well, as you might guess, I WON'T be calling him back... even though I HAVE verified his bogusness!

Recieved a call from someone speaking extremely bad English and very heavily accented- maybe from India or Pakistan. She said she was calling for Microsoft and that my computer was infected with a virus. I had to ask her four times what company she was calling from and finally she said Global I Tec. The number she gave was 315-633-4050. That was not the number that was on caller ID. SHe repeated my compouter was infrected and to turn it on so she could fix it. I asked her which one- she did not know. I could hear pages being turned when I asked her questions and sh got irritated when I would not follow her directions. I asked her how she got my phone number- she ignored the question. This is definitely a scam. Needless to say, I did not give them any information. Please report them to Microsoft and the Better Business Bureau.

Received a call from an Indian lady who claimed that she was representing eProtection Global, based in Scotland. She claimed that they were a Microsoft contractor and had detected a problem with my computer.

First, she wanted to establish that I had a Windows machine by identifying the key next to CTRL (!), then spent five minutes trying to get me to identify the "little R key" and press it with the Windows key so that I could run a command. I repeatedly asked them to identify the software that was causing the problem and establish how they had identified it, but she just claimed that they had detected it using their router (?). I asked to be forwarded to her supervisor and the line went dead.

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

Keep getting calls from someone claiming to be Microsoft computer guy. They first claimed my computer was sending reports that something was wrong with my internet then that my software (in particular) windows products needed updating. Could tell they were in a busy call center and they have a heavy India accent. My son decided to screw around with them and hooked up an obsolete computer with ancient software on it and two hours later was still on the phone with them. I finally called it quits they and told them that was done with them. They kept calling back and finally told me that I was going to be banned from ever using Windows products again. Ha Ha Ha. I then got a follow up voice message this morning telling me that I needed to update the key code on my software or there would be real problems with my computer and that I needed to call back. That is when they finally left this phone number. (Like I would call them back) I even told them specifically to never call me again. Apparently they are not ready to give up.

Caller identified himself as Sandy.  Told me there's a problem with my computer.  Repeated himself telling me he needed to fix it.  I asked him for his number which he stated was 315-633-4050 even though it said on caller id "private caller".  When I asked if I could call him back on this number he hung up.
I worry that they've hacked into Apple customer service or Best Buy Geek Squad as I've been communicating with both about my computer.

I got one of these calls last week from Henry at eprotection global.  I led him on and he tried to get me press the windows and the "r" keys then type in what he told me.  Said my computer had a damaging virus that was hidden and would destroy my computer (which one?).  I checked it out and found nothing, it seems they are trying to get people to "infect" their own pc and they will charge to put it right.

I have just had another call from the same people, I told them if my computer breaks I will buy a new one.  He said i mustn't do that, gave him no joy, computer shows no sign of any infection, tell them to go away.  Next time, I just hang up or leave the phone on the table. Always foreign accents.

Just got a call from a number that showed as 000-000-0000 on the caller id, from a man claiming to be Gary from Microsoft. And he also said he was in Canada. He said my computer has been sending error messages and they wanted to help me clean my computer up. Thankfully my husband was a smarter cookie than that and didn't fall for anything, and listened to me as I'm saying in the background to get his number and name. That's how I got this number. I'm so glad I found this site to check on so many of the odd numbers we get calls from. So much for being on a no-call list.
