BBB Alerts About Phony Debt Collectors

6 Aug 2009
Better Business Bureau has issued a national alert about phony debt collectors that are calling consumers nationwide and claiming that they have defaulted on a payday loan and will be arrested if they don?t pay immediately.

Claiming to be lawyers, the scammers say they are with the ?Financial Accountability Association? or the ?Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans? and often have the victim?s Social Security, old bank account numbers or driver?s license numbers as well as home addresses, employer information and even the names of personal friends and professional references.

Debt Collector
I just got a call from some Middle Eastern yahoo using an Irish name claiming that I was in serious trouble and that I should get a pen and paper to take down important legal information that could keep me out of trouble as an account had been turned over to them on my behalf. The caller ID also identifed them as Midwest Tech. Let me explain some things - first I have been doing collection work for over 30 years and this appears to be one of those fly by night guys who doesn't believe the Fair Debt and Collection Practices Act applies to them. The FDCPA outlines specific rules and regulations for doing third party collections. There was just an article the other day about these companies. They hire people to collect debts that they bought, most of these debts are invalid and the companies nor their employees care, they use any methods to scare, threaten, and intimidate people to pay them as that is the only way they make any money. This particular goofball starting giving me information about another person all together. When I answered my office phone, he said he had important information and to take a pencil and paper and write it down. When I finally got a word in edgewise, I asked him who he was trying to reach and then when he told me I explained you got the wrong guy and then he insisted that I knew the phone number of the person he was trying to reach. These idiots are laughable and please do not take them seriously. Eventually the Indiana Attorney General's office or BBB will catch up with these jerks and control them a bit better.
