A few things to remember:

1) The best scenario is to answer the phone, and set it down on the table.  Don't waste a second of your time listening or trying to hit some number to be removed.  Just let the message roll.  Trust me, they won't listen to your request to stop calling, but if we ALL burn up their phone line minutes by letting their message run full-course, they will feel it, as it quickly ties up their lines to make more calls.

2) If it is a live person, be extremely polite and tell them that you would "love to help them, but just cannot at this time" and offer to call them back... Now at this point you are in control of the conversation, and can begin to ask them questions that they normally wouldn't answer, like what company they are with, where are they based, etc.  I have used this technique and actually been told real names of others in their organization which can be included in a report to donotcall.gov.  

3) When I'm in a feisty mood, one of my personal favorites is simply to act like I'm half deaf and cannot hear them. After about a minute of "Huh?... What? ... Who again?" and phrases like that, they are more likely to hang up and actually delete your number.

Finally, if they know you are irritated by the calls, they WILL continue to call, so the real key is either make it so that you smother them with kindness to get them to drop their guard and divulge information, (which you can use ina report to the FTC), or to make it so inconvenient for them to call your number that they will remove it.

2 more P.I.T.A Robo calls from the Sanitatium! He won't quit! This 1 came at 6:52 CT on 3/19/12. It's ONLY the RepubliCANTS calling, by the way. They're desperate. On the DNC & Unlisted but I guess if we're voters these jerko calls can butt in. Wish these could be banned as well as the Telemarketers. ANNOYING!

Called and I was stupid enough to answer.  Caller ID said "Aurora".  When I called the number I got the message "This number is used for a Political call and will not be answered".  The do not call list does not work for political calls due to the fact the Politicians made the law.  This call makes eight that we have received just today.  I will be disconnecting my land line and using cell phones only if this BS continues.

It is illegal for them to call cellphones.

It's a Rick Santorum robo-call.  I hung up...it called back....I hung up...it called back....I tried calling back and got a recording.

Sadly, political calls are exempted from the do not call list.  Both parties made damn sure of that.

ARGH! Last night at 8:43PM a hang up. Today: on St. Pat's Day @1:41PM CT a robo call from MRS. Sanitarium about her 7 brats & her B.S. Family values!  I would'nt vote for this fool. WHY can't we ban these stupid Political calls? DNC does no good. We're still Unlisted but it don't matter. The clods STILL call. UGH.

These people called a few days ago, too. If I ever get a person I will gladly tell them that, no, I won't vote in the primary and it definately won't be for their wack job candidate.

Stop voting for any democrat or republican. Just stop it. Vote for ANYBODY else.

This was on my cell phone -- it was a robo-call from Santorum. It was a recorded message asking if I was going to vote. If you hit the zero key, then it just hangs up.

I am on the Donotcall list, but I am aware that political calls are legal. However, I don't think it should be legal to call a cell phone. I have to pay for their calls ? IT MAKES ME SO MAD!


(BTW, I try to not vote for anyone I get a robo-call from. So, campaign people and politicians, you keep that in mind!)

It continues to amaze me that people post 'do not call' messages on this site AS IF the people calling will read their post and know which number not to call any more.

First, register your phone numbers with www.donotcall.gov and READ the information at that website.

Second, political calls like this are considered legal.

Third, don't post using your real name here.  If you get an illegal telemarketing call, immediately report it to www.donotcall.gov and then add it to your phone's address book under SCAM.

Same as above -- political robocall survey talking about the upcoming primary in Illinois and wanting you to press a number to answer their questions.  Pretty stupid but, sadly, not illegal.
