I have recieved multiple phone calls that sound exactly the same. The call it along the same lines as well. It sounded
like a call center, and he was reading a script. In todays call I was told my windows system was infected with "bugs"
and they had recieved and error message sent from my computer alerting them. They needed to fix the "bad bugs"
before it crashed my pc. hummm, I asked the tech what operating system I was using, and he said I was using vista.
Fine, I said you must have the wrong person because thats not what I use and if you got the message from my pc it
looks like you would know that. He then proceeds to ask me what I'm using. Again I say if you have the error report
then you should know. He asks me again, so I tell him I have a mac. He demands to know why didnt I TELL him that
in the first place. He goes on to say my system needs fixed before it crashes, to which I tell him that I believe this call
is phony and I'm going to report it to microsoft. At this point he tells someone ...she says she is reporting
this call...and I hear someone else answer "hang up" and he does. I might add I have caller id as well as private call
blocking and nothing comes up when these calls come in, no name no number. As for reporting this to microsoft I
have been trying to do that but apparently it will cost me 200$ to contact a human rep for resolution. Any help with
this to actually contact microsoft or to know where to report this would be greatly appreciated.

I have to agree with you . I just got a new laptop and Mcafee protection .Soon after I was gettoing " computer at risk "warnings . then I get a call from Semantic InfoTech .they offered this protection pkg. , actually they had 4-5 , they were all different pkgs 1year all the way up to full complete protection for up to 5 years , as well as , telephone and remote assistance . Oh and they also offered an inexpensive payment plan , enabling me to stop service anytime I'm not happy , That's why I find it quite curious , reading all the negative comments. I will say , however , they were very persistant in the beginning until I let them know the only way I would agree to do business is the Canadian way " ABOVE BOARD " All and all , I have had the service for about 7.5 months now . NO PROB. and I'm not a lucky guy LOL

Just a word of clarification: Symantec (Norton) are and have been an upstanding reputable company for over 30 years.
The company representing themselves as Sementec or Semantec or Symetic Infotec or similar has not been forth coming in substantiating their credentials. It is not my intention to condem any reputable company but at this time it appears someone using this name or semblance of this name for less than honest reasons over the phone line.
Nothing is free.
No one knows about your computer unless you show them.
If you allow a stranger to take control of your computer, then you own all the problems that result.
Good luck. Only trust the good guys you know and you can contact by mail, phone, email AND chat.

These people are fake fake fake.
The phone computer scammers are
getting smarter. Just spent 45
minutes with one. His name was
Allen David, from Symantec
Protection Services and his phone
number was 347-329-4400. I
actually called him back and Allen's
cohort answered. He told me to
type in a CLSID # at the CMD
prompt, and I tell you this because
if you do it, you will find it. It is
NOT unique. How SMART is that?
Once you find it, they will say, "Ah
hah! That proves you have the
virus." which of course I do NOT!

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected-corrupted scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

It is a scam. Why would you get a call from a random crook claiming you have a virus in your computer? He got into your computer cause you gave him the permission to do so. You got the call first right, and you made a stupid move by listening to the crook on the other end. Take your computer to a qualified technician and fix it. Since he got into your computer he must've uploaded some virus on it. Block the number, and report it to the FTC. www.ftc.gov.
