Just got the same call at home not too long ago but from a guy named Matt Johnson.
I have worked in IT for years and windows has never called my house line nor do they even know it. I asked if he was from rogers and when he said he wasn't, I right away called the b*****d out on his scam, and then he just hung up the phone and that was that.

I have had the most malicious of viruses presented on my computer where the only way to access files were thru DOS commands cause windows has been damaged so badly, and even then in the worst of times, microsoft windows doesn't call to help. Usually it's the other way around. So just beware and if u get a call like this, ignore it or tell the guy where he can shove it.

Yeah, I'm an IT Professional as well.  Got a call from this unknown number, stating basically the same as what is currently written here.  The only issue at hand is that I do not use a windows platform at home, thus, why would Microsoft contact me?  When prompted about being pure BS, I was told to call the 3475719017 number and I would get the "Windows" Technical Helpdesk.  What a crock.  Pure phishing scam.  I'd like to know what they want us enter as a command, I didn't get that far.

My mom  received a phone call from a heavily accented man who identifed himself as "Paul Smith".  He told me he was calling on behalf of Microsoft and that my computer had downloaded some files that could be problematic, asked me to turn my computer on, hit the windows start key, and then type in a file name.  I did turn my computer on, but did not type in what he was asking me to type in as I felt uneasy about this,.  I am her daughter and I am the one using the computer as my mom is not familiar with this..... so she got this phone number from him, and he suggested I call him right back.  She nor I did not call back!!!

The caller called from 975-910-9488

I am an IT Security professional well versed in scams.

Someone with a heavy Indian or Pakistani accent claiming they were from Microsoft called to say I had downloaded some malicious files and that I needed to enter in a command.  I asked for his name and number in case we got disconnect and he advised me his name was "Paul Smith".  I asked what command he wanted me to enter and he must have gotten suspicious at that point so he hung up without providing the command so I cannot verify what the command would have done.

This is likely a scam aimed at panicking people in to launching or disabling applications on their PCs in so the perpetrator can leverage vulnerabilities.

Please be aware that Microsoft will NEVER call you to let you know you have an infected system.  Likewise, unless it's a serious offense your service provider will not call you to tell you you have an infected system.  If someone calling you claims to be from your service provider, take their name and number and say you'll call them back, then look up the contact information from your ISP and call that number to verify the call.
