I received a very suspicious voice mail which I could hardly hear in CA. It sounded like a man from Indian decent. He said he was from the investigative department of the IRS. When I called back the voice message and name was totally different and it showed the call was to NY. Glad to hear from you out there that this is a scam. What can be done?

I just got the call this morning. First he asked for my wife.
The caller had a heavy India Indian accent wants my wife to call Damon Marshall at the IRS Investigation bureau.
I asked him where his location was and he told me he was is NYC and that the IRS agent was waiting for me to call at their HQ in NYC.
Then he told me to call Damon Marshall. Since I had a hard time understanding him, I had to repeatedly ask him to repeat what he said.
When I told him he was a scammer, be got belligerent and told me I would be in trouble with the IRS and they'll be knocking on my door and I was wasting his time.

I got a call from this #. The guy had a heavy indian accent, self identified as David Parker from IRS Department Income Tax (???). He wanted to speak with my son regarding his 2012 Tax. Also claimed as an IRS investigator. I stated I will report his call to the FBI, he hung up immediately.

This guy called and said his name was "Brian Smith" and he was from the "IRS Criminal Department" He had a very thick foreign accent and was speaking incoherently about how I owed taxes from the previous years. He said if I didn't pay right now that legal action would be taken against me and wanted my account information for the payment. I asked him why I didn't receive any paperwork directly from the IRS and flat out called him delusional if he thought I was just going to give my account number to anyone who called me. He immediately hung up. I just filed a complaint with the FTC http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0076-phone-scams If he calls again I'm going to record it and put it up on Youtube

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Some guy with a heavy accent just called this morning, saying there is a miscalculation on my last year's tax return. He was being rude and was trying to use words and phrases like legal action and investigation to freak me out. He even said "you are wasting my time sir", wtf?

I received the same called too in the early morning around 7:33 am 2/13. I was taking this call seriously because it is from IRS, After being threatening that I was being arrested.... blah, blah, blah, I called police and realized that this is not the way IRS contacts tax payers and the call is simply a scam. Now I am going to block this number.

Got a call from same guy at same number. Called back and the person answer "IRS". I told him I was forwarding his voicemail to the Maryland State's Attorney as harassment and impersonating a federal agency which is a felony. He hung up on me.

I am getting a call from a person called Gordon Woods and saying he was from IRS and I have to call 347-722-6328 Damon Marshall immediately on the same number and that I have taxes miscalculated for last 10 years and action is being taken to seize my property and i will be taken to court :-) I called this person getting his answering service only. When you listen the recorded message reflects he is from IRS investigation unit. He is asking leave the name, case number and telephone number to call back. I didn't leave any message in his answering machine. I called and spoke to him. He is asking about my attorney's name and number and saying I have some kind of case against me. I asked him to send me official communication as IRS and law abiding citizens do not deal with these matters on the phone. He did not further discuss and hung up.
Its harassment call specially targeting old and innocent people who may fall in the trap of these scammers. One more call and I am complaining...

As most of you the guy with a middle easter accent called and left a voice mail about IRS etc. I called David Parker back and a guy by the name of Damon Marshall answering the phone as the criminal division of the IRS. He wanted my attorney name address and phone number. I told him he need to send a letter to my accountant. He said they only dealt with attorneys. I told him to F himself and hungup. I have contacted the Seceret Service to start an investigation into this guy and what they are up to.

Hi everyone, I also got a call but I know IRS, and other governments establishments do not call they sent letters.
I called this No 347726328 and gave him what he deserves, then called Cherry Hill police station, unfortunately their response was not helpful, they told me this is nothing these people normally would go and collect money aright at the door, mainly senior citizens.
My question is, how is it that police is not doing anything about it, by setup a trap or locating them using NSA (we tax pair paying for it), I am not satisfied by the officers answers " you can report it but nothing gone happen" or 'they are too big and we can't do much about it " and " they are out side the country??? if so how do they come and pick up the money?.
I am sure if I don't pay my traffic ticket I would easy be arrested and put in jail.
it is amazing while each and every one of us are being tracked by our own government NSA as to what we say to whom we talk to and where we go what we buy etc... don't they have the capability to pick up bunch of thefts. next time I get a call from police for donation I will give them this No. 347726328, to pickup money.

I just received a call from this same person. He had a very very thick Asian accent. Sounded Chinese. Scary part was he pronounced my last name correctly as I do not have N easy last name. But he Also mentioned he was from IRS and thT I had to call ASAP then finishes call with "take care" weird !!! . I had a similar call last year that my identity was under investigation and to call right away to this strange #. Same heavy and unintelligible accent. Luckily I never called either one.
| Annoyed Citizen 2014-01-28 01:21:54 Unknown |
The caller left a message on my voicemail. I could hardly understand him due to his HEAVY accent (possibly Indian) and mumbling of words. I could only make out some words like IRS, income tax, call back, legal action. I had to play it eight times to make out these words. I called the number for Damon Marshall back 347-722-6328 and reached a voicemail box with the outgoing message spoken clearly. I apparently reached the "criminal division of the IRS." I do not know what the protocol is but I am sure it is nothing like what this scammer is trying to pull. Thanks, Kathy (the tax accountant) for informing us. This just annoys me. All this scammer needs is for one person to fall for his scam. I hope no one does. I also wish I could get those 10 minutes of my life back. Good luck to all!

Got the same call with the same stuff as everyone else
| Kathy 2014-01-27 18:14:22 Unknown |
They left a message on my home phone with the name of John Cross saying that they were criminal investigators with IRS. They don't know it, but I am a tax accountant and know that this is not standard protocol for them to do this. I checked with this website, and this number is listed as one of the scam numbers. I do not know the origin of the call, but to the normal person, it will get your attention when they use this language. Trust me, if there is a criminal investigation, there will either be a notice to appear personally handed to you by an Internal Revenue staff member or someone with a badge showing up at your doorstep. Do not return the call from this phone number.

I did not answer this call because "unknown" on caller ID. I was suspicious right from the start because of the heavy accent and I couldn't understand but a few of the words in his message so my first instinct was to google the phone number. I'm certain the IRS would mail a notice. Not call. Even if they were to call you, it wouldn't be someone with such poor English speaking skills. Below is the Voicemail to text version of the call.
VM to Text : Monday | January 27, 2014 | 9:30 AM EST | 55 seconds ?This message is intended for president. Got four five seven. The ready second you receive this message I need you or your reaching attorney off record to delete-and-calling(?) to see you at the hand is extremely time sensitive. My name is Jonathan Wolf from I guess it's been turned(?) I got one your-service-mister(?) Smith and hotline to my division is 3477226328. I repeat it's 3477226328. Don't try to disregard this message and do return the call as soon as possible before any legal allegations takes-place-reach-have-with-a-reminder(?) that the tenant-said-that(?) can see if your income tax. So I had to take gas(?).
