Just got a text from this number. This is the second time this year I've gotten a text from these same scammers. What's up with that?

I do live in the Oly area and have never banked with obee credit union.  The phone number is local and I too thought it was maybe a wrong number at first, however, I've had my phone number for at least 12 years.

Please warn family and friends about this scam.  I can see some of my older family members falling easily for this scam.

My husband and I both got similar msgs on our cell phones last night.  Seems to have been going on for awhile now. We know about O-Bee Credit Union but have never done business with them. Thanks to all the posted comments, we won't waste any additional time wondering about this.  Gotta love(?) the Internet!

Got a message saying my account had been suspended, I called to see what it was all about, because I don't have account through this bank. Never could talk with any person. Looked up the bank online and called the number they provided, Talked with a rep who told me it was a scam and they were aware of it.

Hi there,

I am with Aurigma, just want to tell that we did had an office in WA, and used this number, but we had closed it more than one year ago. We do not have any relation to that number anymore. So we have no idea who is OBee CU and why they send scam messages using that number.

I'm can provide a software developer's perspective on this.

Since its a text message, they can do mass sending from an email server at no cost.  All they need to know is the local area code and all of the pre-fixes for the cell phones in the olympia area.  Then they just hit them numerically with the last four digits... 0000 to 9999, then on to the next prefix.  It doesn't matter if they hit a number that isn't active, because the server will just reject it and go on to the next one.  Thats why we haven't got them all at the same time.  My friend got his around 2:00, my wife at about 4:00, and me around 5:00.  We all have the same prefix, and that happens to be the order in which our last 4 digits would come up numerically.

Once the software is written to do this, it literally takes no effort at all... they just sit back and wait for the calls.  Even if only 1% of people fall for it, thats still a good amount of money for them.

I work in Olympia, got the same text message, have never banked with Obee in my life, and am curious as to where the scammer got my number from.

I got the same text message as listed above from an "Unknown Sender". I have never been an O'Bee customer and have had this phone number for longer than O'Bee has existed, so it's not likely it's a wrong number. Called the number and an automated voice like any other card activation system answers the phone. Of course I didn't enter any information, but it does look like a scam.

I talked to a rep at O'Bee (while I was typing this), she says it is a phishing scam and they haven't found the source of it. Their IT department is attempting to identify the source and is working with authorities to have it shut down. Ah, scammers, when will you ever learn...

Text message reads:

"OBee CU Alert:  Your CARD has been DEACTIVATED.  Please contact us at 360-539-5306 to REACTIVATE your CARD."

Who the heck is OBee CU and how did they get my phone number?  Googled their phone number, it seems to belong to aurigma.com, although it is not the company's main number.

Conclusion:  this is a SCAM.  I am ANNOYED.  I am NOT going to CALL them.

I did a whois search on Aurigma.com... it is registered through godaddy.com to a guy in the Russian Federation.  Sounds totally legit.  :)

I am a member of this Credit Union... along with most of my extended family.  I'm willing to bet that my grandparents and other relatives have all fallen for this.  Its a small town one-branch bank, and it isn't uncommon to have a teller personally call you over such issues.

I also live in the Olympia, Wa area... and (360) 539-XXXX numbers are very common.  Its definatley someone local, and the Credit Union assures me that the authorities are involved.

Yep, I just got a text and have never heard of OBU CU.  When you call the number it says select option 1 to reactivate your card and it asks you to enter your card number.  I am sure this is a scam to get your card number!
Makes me mad!

Final correction:

I called the bank named in the text message and they confirmed:

THIS IS A PHISHING SCAM.

The phone number in question does not belong to the credit union.  If you get this message, do not call the number.

Correction:  further Google search indicates OBee CU is an Olympia, WA area credit union.  The phone number probably used to belong to an aurigma.com branch office, was disconnected, and was then reconnected to the bank.  Possibly.  I'm speculating.

The fact remains, I've never heard of this institution before, don't have an account with them, don't intend to call them.  However, it's POSSIBLE this was  a simple WRONG NUMBER and not an outright scam.  Maybe.  Regardless, it's still annoying to get quasi-threatening text messages from unknown entities.
