We called Blue Shield to check this out. They said it's a "third party" affiliated with them, calling Blue Shield subscribers to remind them of routine medical screens that are covered. Stuff like breast cancer screening, colo-rectal scanning, fun stuff like that. They probably ask for your birth date to make sure they're talking to the right person. Seems pretty common in the medical field. A person's birth date is a matter of public record, so there's little risk in providing it. Social Security number is a different story.

So I guess it's a third party, that's based in Georgia, placing the calls trying to drum up business. Annoying? Definitely. Scam? I don't think so. Will I be calling back? Hell, no.

Scam call alert.

Incoming number identified as 404-381-1653  (Atlanta area).  Call back number was  877-864-5270, with a pin # .

I assume that entering the pin # will put a big charge on your phone bill, or as people have noted above, it's  a phishing scam.  

Calling my phone provider to complain & reporting to Blue Shield tomorrow.

This is not the way Blue Shield of CA does business:  They never do anything after 5pm PST, and as for reminders, they just wait until your payment is late and then cancel your insurance.

I got a message from this number on my answering machine saying they're from Blue Shield with a pin number to enter to receive a message.  I did not call back, but I did call Blue Shield with a different number I have for them,  and they told me they are sending out this call to subscribers to receive information on new services.  It may be annoying, but it doesn't appear to be a scam.

Who is behind this number??

Got a robo-call requesting personal info supposedly from Blue Cross??? Hung Up!

We got a call from this number also. THREE times. We have not answered it and are trying to block it. Thanks for the info.!

They called me too, with a voice over voicemail telling me to call Blue Shield for important health insurance information.  They left two messages with pin numbers.  I'm sure this is not the company calling, just like mentioned in the other post where they get your birthdate to use protected information.  I had dialed the number back on my caller ID just to see where it was coming from.  A voice message answers "thanks for calling us back, is this "my name?"  I hung up the phone immediately.

These are criminats who want to use your health insurance - that is why they ask your birthdate if you call back.
