Received a phone call from Robert Frost from phone number 404-941-3040. I am the primary subject in a case being downloaded in my county today. Wants a call back from me or my attorney of record. There is also another caller from 816-717-1653 from Karen Rogers....same exact thing. Do not pay these people. Do not allow these people to scare you. You will not receive anything in the mail if you ask for it.

I have received several calls/messages over the past few weeks.  I have also received similar calls/messages from another number in the past year.  Basically the same message every time. "This is (name of caller) from the Financial Crime Division.  I have you listed as a central subject in an active criminal investigation being downloaded in you accounting (or county) today.  I nee to speak with you or your retained attorney immediately regarding this matter."  I never answer and as with most of the other posts I have read, it is usually a literary persons name, including Robert Frost.  They even used Karen Rogers who is like a journalist/ news celebrity in Philadelphia. It is getting absolutely ridiculous and someone should do something about it.

Today my sister called me crying saying someone had stolen her identity. She got a phone call from a  woman that  "claimed" to be an attorney from the Robert Frost office in Georgia. She was asking for her lawyers information because charges were being pressed from an unpaid $3,000 online cash advance payday loan from 2012 and she could face jail time. The woman stated that if she pays $100 today and set up arrangements, the charges would be dropped. When my sister asked if this was a secure line (so that she could give the woman her credit card number), the woman became very rude told her that she didn't have time for her to do research and that they were going to press charges and proceed with the filing process. Then the woman hung up. These people are horrible!!!!  im so glad I found this site to calm my sister down.

There's no way you can stop the calls from being initiated.  You might have to have a call blocker installed.

This is really an extortion attempt.  You should make a report to your local police and attorney general.

Also see:  https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Not clear where these calls are coming from.  Could be India, could be  domestic.   If the person calling you has an Indian accent then you know where the call is coming from.

Ignore them.  It looks like a total scam to me.   Don't call them back and don't talk to them.   If they have a valid debt then tell them (if you do talk to them) to send you a letter with all the particulars and have it sent by US mail.  If they don't do that, they get nothing.  e-mail no good.  Do not pay any attention to their threats and DO NOT agree to anything or send them any money or financial information.

Report them: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

I, too, received phone calls from a 'Robert Frost,' with a strong southern accent.  My father is an attorney, so I know a bit about the law.  No one legitimate is going to leave such messages.  I cannot imagine that ANYONE would give out their bank information to such people. You're practically begging to be scammed when you do that.

These people ate very bold. You need not pay them anything. They need to put it in writing. Always check your credit and bank statement. File a compliant with the FTC. I have been making a photocopy of the calls for record of harassment. If you know you don't owe anyone anything.. Answer the call and boldly state. Don't call me; write me and promptly hang up your phone.

I received the same call from Robert Frost. Wasn't he a famous poet??

Anyways, I had a discharged Chapter 7 in Feb 2014. The bankruptcy took care of all of the payday loans that I owed money to. There is no way that I owe anyone. The individual who left the message never once stated the name of the company he was with or the alleged company he was representing. If this was a true collection notice, that information would have been provided.

This is nothing more than a scam. DO NOT SEND THESE "PEOPLE" ANY MONEY, YOUR BANK ACCT INFO, OR CREDIT CARD INFO.

Per Alfalfa:

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

Read this investigative report ABC News did on this scam:

Hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans have been targeted by abusive debt collectors operating out of overseas call centers suspected of links to organized crime in India, law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The calls are part of a massive scam, one that appears to target struggling Americans -- especially those who have gone online to apply for payday loans. Armed with personal information from those pilfered applications, the threatening callers, who claim to be debt collectors poised to initiate legal action, have managed to pry loose millions of dollars from their victims -- even when the victims never owed money in the first place.

"This is what we call a phantom debt collection scam," said Jon Leibowitz, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. "It's a very pernicious and innovative new fraud."

Working through call centers in India, the commission estimates that the criminals have dialed at least 2.5 million calls, persuading already cash-strapped victims to send them more than $5 million. Some have reported receiving dozens of calls per hour. They are victims like Cindy Gervais, of New Orleans, who went online for a quick loan when her husband's car was hit by a driver who didn't have insurance.

Even though she paid the loan off, the so-called "phantom" debt collectors with Indian accents began calling to say she still owed money.

"He more or less told me that if I didn't pay, they were going to have someone on my doorstep to arrest me," she told ABC News. "And that they were going to contact my place of business, and tell them what kind of person I am."

At first, she said she resisted. Then the calls became more frequent, and started to ring on her cell phone, and at the grocery distribution company where she had worked for 27 years.

"I was more or less in panic mode because he told me there would be someone before noon at my place of business to arrest me and take me to jail," she said tearfully. "So I agreed to pay him."

After receiving scores of complaints, investigators with the FTC said they began tracking the calls, and following the payments. They alleged the payments led them to a California company run by an Indian-American named Kirit Patel, and that such scams would not be possible without American front men.

"I would say that all roads of this scam, or many of the roads of this scam, lead back to Mr. Patel," said the FTC's Leibowitz.

ABC News tracked Patel for weeks, from the suburbs of San Francisco to Austin, Texas.

Patel refused to talk. But his lawyer, Mark Ellis, said he believes it is far too early to pass judgment on his client. Ellis, a Sacramento-based attorney, told ABC News that Patel was hired for a nominal fee to set up an American shell company, and had no idea what the call centers in India were doing.

"I can tell you, he was as snookered by the people in India as anybody," Ellis said. "He's a 69-year-old man who is nearing his retirement who thought all he had to do was set up some corporations and everything was on the up and up. He's completely dismayed that he has become the lightning rod of this entire problem."

A close friend of Patel's also defended him in a brief interview at his home, saying Patel was not trying to defraud anyone -- he was just an unwitting, bit player in a larger scheme.

This company has called me twice; a man said his name was "Robert Frost", that he needed to speak to me or my attorney about a "case that was being downloaded" in which I was the defendant, and that it was "time sensitive." Huh?? I called the number, and a young woman said her name was Renee Buckley or Berkeley, that she was a private investigator, that I had 3 criminal charges against me: Check Fraud, Violation of Federal Banking Laws, and something else I didn't catch. I told her I had no idea what she was talking about. She asked me if I was (my maiden name!), and I told her that was my maiden name (which I haven't used in over 30 years). Then she asked me if I had taken out a loan, and I told her absolutely not. She asked if I would like to have them "mediate this case for me" and I of course said no. She then said, "I guess we will have to send it to the State's Attorney's office," and I said, "I guess you will" and hung up. Who are they kidding?? If I had such serious charges against me, I'd be in jail right now. And where exactly is it this stuff is being "downloaded" to or from?? And why would you send this to a State Attorney's office? If it was a criminal charge, it would originate with the police in my area, who would promptly arrest me. At no point did either of these people tell me the name of their company (I found out by calling back again, and someone answered, "Legal Mediation."), where exactly I was supposed to have done these things, or any other details. I looked up the number -- the company is in Atlanta, Georgia, and they have a very bad reputation. If they call you, don't let them scare or intimidate you. They're probably doing something illegal, and will end up in jail long before you do. I am going to try and find out who I can report this to.

I just got this call too and called back. The lady refused to send me any documentation and said she would only send it to my lawyer. When I said I will not give you that information if you do not give me the information first. You could barely even hear her with soo much background noise. I told her this sounds like a scam and that I had this 2 years ago which the state attorney general had to take care of for me. She said it was not and that she was downloading it to the county today as well. So I e-mailed the state attorney general and looked up the felonies she said I was going to be charged with. Both say I would have to owe over $1000 which I have got anywhere near that much money. This is wrong and I do not like people scaring a good citizen who works hard to survive. I have nothing to give so they can try to get me but all I have is 100 K in student loan debt.

I also received the same message from Robert Frost and when I call a C.j, Roberts said he didn't know who Robert frost was. And that I owed 1300 to an online payday loan. I asked him to provide a name of the company and he could not... Beware of this Scam... Ask a lot of questions and don't pay nothing.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

I told them I wanted my money back, the man said we will have to move forward then. I just left bank and there was a refund made at 7:30 psd time. The bank said it is being refund from Florida. I thought they was from Georgia, well that is what they said. If this was a real debt collecter they would not give u your money back.

I got the same call all of you did.  After recently being the target of some harrassing phone calls in an attempt to collect a debt, I did my research and pulled mycredit report.  None of these companies are on my credit reports.  I also contacted the attourney general and filed a complaint.  To cover myself I also emailed the police department that I was receiving the calls in.  The calls were coming on my work number.

The police and the attourney general both told me to request written documentation of the proof of the debt and to get the name of the company these people claim to be collecting the debt for.  If they cannot or will not provide this information it is a scam.
