I got a call saying they represented Patelco Credit Union...they've called me numerous times and all about collecting overdraft charges. I don't even have this account! I asked them to produce me a document and each time I get some rude lady saying "just pay your bill" and then hangs up. I call back and they just pick up the phone and hang up over and over and over. I'm tired of the harassing calls!

Called the place I retired from 15 months ago. Left a message and asked that person to get in contact with me and gave his name and number and extension. I called the number and the girl said Bridgeport and I said sorry I have the wrong number.
she said rudely "Sure you do".

I have to debts or credit cards. So this has to be a SCAM.

To be honest, I have an unpaid doctors bill and this is the agency that is attempting to collect from me. I have never answered the call so I can't attest to their treatment of my case. I can say that they also send me paper statements with company letterhead et al.

I would have to make an educated guess though and say that is definitely likely that those of you being called at businesses with no legitimate debt to speak of, your number was probably put down in place of a debtors real phone number.

Thanks to student loans I don't need to worry about my credit because it's probably been at its lowest for years, but those with children, mortgages etc. Where your credit DOES need to be worried about, if you're getting paper statements is probably wise to at least try and work with them.

I get a message from this number on Sunday at 7:57 am, I returned the call later than afternoon and spoke to them and told them I was not responsible for that dollar amount. I explained that I brought in a signed form not authorizing Patelco Credit Union for overdraft charges. The lady stated "so you don't want to pay the $457 dollars?  That would be correct.  I received 2 calls on Monday from Vanessa, I explained to her about Sunday's call and she continued to interrupt me, I asked if she wanted to hear about the previous conversation and she said "no...are you taking care of the $457?", my response was "no, as I mentioned..." and then she hung up. I called back 3 more times, all 3 times, Vanessa answered and hung up...I can see why she's in this job....her service sucks....My attorney will be calling next!

I have gotten calls from this company before regarding a debt I'm trying to workout with a Credit Union. They initially called my work which was not cool, but since I had moved several times and they didn't have my new cell phone number I guess I understood why they were trying. I had received letters from them while trying to work it out with this particular Credit Union. Finally I started paying them some funds to bring down my balance on a checking account that was pretty much just late fee's that had been moved into my checking account. I was trying to negotiate not paying these so that I could pay down on the credit card balance but no negotiation was possible until I cleared this debt. I'm almost clear with that and will be making my payment for the remaining $50.00 today after seeing they just called. The person I worked with at Bridgeport is Rodney Clemens (I assume his real name) but he has been very helpful and understands that many of us are struggling to meet our obligations and will work with you if you continue to communicate. My message to all of you. Don't ignore as if they are calling you at work and you owe a good chunk of money there is a good chance they will attach your wages. I'm working to avoid that. Just my 3 cents.

Got many calls from Roger Young.  It's definitely a recorded message.  Funny thing is he recorded himself sounding as if someone is holding a gun to his head to read the script.  It's the same message each time and it always starts halfway through the message and you have to listen to the end before it starts over again with the vital information.  I called back and no one answers phone nor is there a voice mail.  It just rings and rings.

Yes this very RUDE man called my job and demanded me to give him a phone number when I told him not to call my job anymore. I asked him to give me his name and number and he said NO, not until you give me a number to contact you. I told him I wasn't going to give him a number because if it is so important he can send me a letter. He did not tell me who I owed money to and he continued to deny my request for his phone number. So I told him one last time that we do not accept personal calls at work and if he wanted to talk to me then he would have to give me his name and number. Finally he did give it and I told him to have a nice day and hung up. Well now I will not call him back he can send me letters in the mail to contact me now due to his rudeness.

A phone call going straight to VM has nothing to do with who is calling. They can't force it to do that. Most likely the phone just didn't get the signal that there was an incoming phone call. The voice mail is not tied to your handset, so it went to the system that handles those and they were able to leave a message. Don't get so paranoid about something like that. It will only drive you nuts.

If you want to get these to stop calling you, send them a letter, certified. This is the ONLY legal way of getting them to stop calling your phone. Asking them over the phone is not going to stop them and it won't matter when/if you file a claim against them that you did so over the phone. But! You can tell them to not contact you at your place of business. This IS something you can do over the phone. They cannot contact you at your work if you tell them not to.

Is it legal for a debt collecter to bypass calling & instead go straight to leaving a message on a cellphone VM?

Vanessa did this, on a Saturday afternoon. Asked for someone by first name only. Asked to have that person call her back @ same #, ext.306.
Vanessa did NOT state she was from Bridgeport; she stated it being urgent that call be returned, w/o any reason given.
I do know the person whose first name she used, & that person has already informed this company that the debt is not hers.

We have a very ill friend & panicked that Vanessa was calling in re: to ill friend & panicked.

This company is using scare tactics, disregarding proper notification of inaccurate debt ID and now bypassing ringing the cellphone, instead dialing straight to VM --- IS THAT EVEN LEGAL?

is this a legitimate law firm....they are very deceptive by disguising their numbers from other companies and not even mailing out the required by law letters giving the option of disputing the debt.

very rude and deceptive measures are being taken with this group of people

First and foremost if the debt collectors are calling, you need to answer the phone. You need to answer the phone because there is a good chance that you may be able to make some kind of payment arrangements to avoid negative information on your credit report or collevction agency involvement. The longer you put them off the more stressed you will be when you do finally answer the calls. You are under stress and the collector must do their job. So just take a breath and answer the call.
#
2

Determine if the debt collector is in fact being rude, unreasonable or breaking consumer laws. It may be that you are just having a bad day or the bills have you stressed. It may also be that you have a valid case. If so document anything you dream a violation or abuse of your rights as a consumer.
#
3

Make note of the times and method in which the debt collector is contacting you. By law a debt collector can contact you between the hours of 8am-9pm ONLY. Anytime outside of this block is illegal and can be filed as a complaint. You can be contacted by phone, mail, in person, telegram or fax.
#
4

Make note of what types of requests are being asked of you by the collector. A debt collector cannot ask for any amount over what you owe unless permitted by your state law. If you specify where a payment is to be applied, the collector must apply it to that amount only. You cannot be forced to pay any amounts that are in dispute or you believe you don't owe.
#
5

Make note of any threats the collector makes. A debt collector cannot use derogatory, profane or obscene language when attempting to collect debt from you. Any threats of bodily harm are against the law. Likewise, threats of taking property or arrest fall into this category.
#
6

If you are not pleased with the way in which a debt collector is handling your situation ask to speak to a manager immediately. Document everything! Get the operator or employee number of the debt collector you spoke with. If you don't receive the proper attention from a manager, report the creditor and any information surrounding the call immediately.
#
7

Report the creditor and/or debt collector to the FTC (Federal Trade Comm4e6ission) and your state's Attorney General office immediately.

Got a call from a William Tinsley and he yelled so loud that my kids could hear him in the other room. He even called on a private number and said he was going to call our neibors. He did not tell me who I owed money to. If he calls you just write a letter to Bridgeport and say " I do not deal with collection companies, I will go to the person you say I might owe money to." This will keep them from calling you. He is a very terrible and rude man !!!

This number called me 3 times within 2 hours.  I never picked up my phone, because I did not recognize the number.  Good to know you all had bad experiences.  If I have time, I might play with them.  Start to mess up them. To see what happens.  I did this once with different company calls.  They never called me back again.  You can say something that was not related their calls.  That will confuse them.

This guy called a number I don't share with anyone and left a request for me to call him and only identified himself as "Mike at Bridgeport Financial and he wanted to talk to me regarding a medical matter". I called and supposedly he was on another line and the female receptionist was very rude. She insisted on a call-back-number and never asked who was calling him. Be careful.
