Craigslist scam artist. Do NOT download the 'viewer' or enter any personal data. VERY old trick. Sadly, some will fall for it.

Got a text message from the same number regarding a post I put on craigslist, and was also prompted to install gimp. I am Used to idiots sending links and scamming so i just googled the number and found this blog.

I got a text in reply to a craigslist ad I posted with a photo link (http://picsoft.org) with Photo ID 347WTM.  The link didn't work so I figured it was probably some kind of scam...

I just posted an ad this morning and an hour later got the same text as described above from the same number. I did a search for this GIMP & scams and got this site, thanks. Hope he can be stopped.

This number texted me about bartering somthing then sent me a link to check out the pics. what an idiot. I even tried to call the number but its blocked, goes straight to busy signal.... so I put it in my phone under reject number so this number will never be able to get through again. everyone just beware of this number. I even spelled out my phone number in my ad so its just someone who is a looser and has time to read our ads.

Sent me a txt that read "Hi regarding your "barter" ad on craigslist want to trade for this? <pic-att> http//picsoft.org photoID 823BTX Plz let me know thanks" SCAM. Apparently It takes you to the website and wants you to download a viewer to see the images. I have read around that this is will download a virus to attain your bank passwords and payment information. BEWARE OF THIS NUMBER!!

same has happened to me.  I am going to report it to craigslist.

Same thing here, he responded to my craigslist ad in AZ on a Dresser and didn't notice it was from CA because my area code here is 480 and his is 408, so I thought he was local at first. The website it takes you to asks you to signup for a photo service starting at 4.95, maybe it's this company thinking that if listing with higher priced items will just sign up for their service because the amount is small relative to what I am trying to trade.......WATCH OUT FOR THIS GUY.....

Received a text message from this number asking questions for an ad I postedon Craig's List. The number is not local to where I live, the text also provided a link to a photo asking if it was the same kind I posted on CL. I didn't fall for this as I'm a savvy web-surfer and always suspect Scammers and malware, therefore I just googled the number and got this forum. Thanks all for your comments I will forward this number to my AT&T unwated texts like this one to the number they provided at no cost 7726. AT&T indicates they will investigate the situation. Check to see if your carrier has a service like this one and take action. I hate the new savvy crooks, but this girl is not a victim. I win!

I live in MI and this person texted me in response to my craigs list wanted ad too.  Good thing I googled the number and found this page first. Some people really suck! Thanks to everyone for reporting this!

The person using this number texted me in response to my wanted ad on craigslist and sent me this link: http://photo-host.net/?photo=686WTX  which leads to the same place as everyone else is describing. Good thing I googled it before doing anything. What a slimeball! I'm reporting them to craigs list as soon as i'm done here!

Got a "text" at 4:49 am, Oct.2nd 2012, asking me to look at Barter offer I had up on Craiglist.This is the web address they wanted me to open> http://photo-host.net/?photo=797BTX. My phone thankfully wouldnt open file. I looked at link from desktop and it asks to download a "Picture Viewer" to see the picture. I did not. But an obvious attempt at getting a VIRUS in my phone and computer. F'n a$$holes. Why can't they get a real job. Rather than to try to steal our money and destroy our belongings. Scumbags the whole lot!

sent me a link to http:photo-host.net photoid 797btx, tries to get me to download a virus via mobile device.

just got a text at 1:18 a.m. which isnt unusual for me iget alot of e-mails from people about craigslist at night. and also fell for the download good thing i caught it though i uninstalled the damn program and nothing bad so far. its probablly an advertising stunt so the guy can make money, it's only recorded when you download it not when you delete it. hope this info helps.

I was also lucky in being stupid thinking I had a genuine reply to an Ad. Thsankd to Microsoft Essentials the down load was blocked and the trojan virus was deleted.

Same thing, evidently someone with too much time on their hands. I have VIPRE antivirus, antispyware and it immediately prompted me not to download. Hopefully no ones computer was damaged or data compromised. I suggest that you immediately go into your "delete progams" file and delete GIMP and anything dealing with "Freeze" in its title, then either restore to and earlier date or run your antivirus program.

I posted an AD on Craigslist because I am looking for a couch and/or loveseat to purchase and this number texted me saying here's a link to view pics of what I have, if you want it then it's yours, Thanks.  I opened the link only to find the pics unavailable unless I download the .GIMP stuff, but my antivirus software alerted me not to download it, so I didn't.  Tried to call the person and the # is disconnected.  Very strange, I don't understand the scam at all though....

just got a call from this number. started downloading gimp. saw the number was 408 and reached down and unpluged my computer. not sure if that worked or not. fired it back up and did a search on the number. found this page

No listing for that number when you try to call it.  Same thing happen to me as to all of you with gimp viewer.

Same thing as others. Couldn't view pic...I didn't enter user name or login on the prompt.

same as everyone else. placed a wanted ad on Craigs, got directed to site that claims I didnt have the right format. Seen this amateurish crap a million times but people still fall for it. If your system couldnt "view" it there would at least be a file addy/hotlink there of which there were none. Just a link to install a .GIMP viewer which all major browsers can view without having to download anything.

This is a tactic that Asian scammers favor

same here, sent me to a weird site to see pics (if texting, why not just send pics? ) it seemed fishy. my antivirus downloaded the "gimp" program in the sandbox to be safe, but didn't report malicious activity. i uninstalled it just in case anyways, even after downloading the images didn't work. i texted back, didn't get a response yet. so weird. also weird that im in CT and number is in Cali.
