The Prefetch is a feature of Windows that actually speeds up the boot process. When Windows starts up, certain processes and programs must load. The files needed to start these are stored in the Prefetch folder. Windows automatically looks there for those files. If you clean out your Prefetch, it won?t hurt anything. But your next boot up will take longer, as those files are put back

He gave us this number, and I was able to call it up and talk to one of the heavy accented persons working at this scam sham. The number is a Liverpool, NY / Syracuse, NY area code: 315-944-2628. My wife treated them like the Nigerian princes seeing if they would send 100k to get 2 million. I basically spoke really loudly and told them I couldn't hear them a number of times telling them to speak up. At one point in all of shenangians, this guy said do you think I am a fool? And at another point, when he said there was a problem with my computer. I said holy s*** really loud. My wife almost peed her pants, because she was laughing so hard.

A man with an Indian-sounding accent called this afternoon, asking for my husband. He said that our "home computer" had been "hijacked" and that "everything on it" was now in the hands of a "large server coming out of New York." He spoke in circles, never answering my questions. Finally, he told me his name was "John Joneson" and that he worked for an "affiliate" of Microsoft and that I should go and sign onto my home computer. Suspecting this was a scam, I asked him what this would cost, and he said, "There is no charge whatsoever. We will help you to remove the malware virus from your computer."

I thanked him and hung up, knowing by then that if I'd gotten onto the computer and let him "talk me through fixing things" I would be giving him access to my computer.

Well, the dude called back TWO MORE TIMES in that hour. He must have thought he heard something in my voice that said I might crack. I finally said, "Bug off, a***ole" and he hasn't called back.

His number is 213-342-8591. Please tell your elderly friends and relatives about this. I can see how someone might fall for this.

Got a call of the same sort.  They asked me to turn on the computer.  When I told them it was up and running they asked what windows operating system I was using.  I told him it was Ubuntu.  He asked if there were any other computers in the house and I said no.  He seemed really confused.  I said after purchase I removed Windows and put Ubuntu on.  He said sorry he had a wrong number and hung up.

Wow its crazy how far back this number goes with scams they aren't saying anything about computer something about a loan not being paid. These people have been calling my job non stop looking for my boss' said he was the California FBI, when I told them he wasn't here they asked for my personal information i refused and hung up. He called right back and ask why I hung up and that if I hung up again I would be arrested. He proceeded to ask for my location (street address and all that stuff) I refused again and asked to speak to someone else because I was having trouble understanding what he was saying (sounded Indian) and he said no. So after every word he said I asked to speak to his supervisor. This went on for about ten minutes then things got out of hand. He started to ask over and over again if he could f*** me then hung up. I called the number back and got an automated service I didn't have an extension son I waited and the same man answered the phone. I told him I wanted to speak to his supervisor right now, he asked for my name so I gave him a fake one. He said OK one moment and hung up on me, but had the nerve to call back saying I kept calling his phone. I told him I called once and I called to complain and I wanted the supervisor. He said he was the man in charge, I said good your just the man I wanted to talk to. He put me on hold again and hung up, hasn't called back yet. So if you keep getting a call from this number just keep asking for a supervisor and don't answer a single question. They will leave you alone:-).

I just got several (because I wouldn't give them what they wanted) phone calls from a guy with a heavy india accent.  Said his name was Jack Parker, that he was in New York, was a Microsoft certified technician with a company called Global Network Support (GNS24x7.us), and that he wanted to help me ''fix my computer because it has been sending out thousands of error messages over the last 2 weeks and that it is going to crash if I don't let him help me fix it by giving him remote access to my computer''.  I refused to give him anything until I could verify who he is and what he wanted to do.  He gave me the company name, web address and this phone number - 1-302-504-6084.  I checked the website.  It is there but still doesn't mean its legit. I was having a hard time understanding him with the heavy accent so I asked it I could talk to someone else.  Gave me to his supervisor - still had an accent, just not as heavy -  a guy named James Franklin.  Told me the same story. I asked how he got my name and number and said I had provided it when I registered my computer.  After reading other posts, I'm glad I didn't give him any info or any access.

Like that's gonna happen..... played dumb and told him he would have to speak to my husband, I pity him if he calls back tonight to talk to my husband...... kim

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

Same as above - My guy was named "William".  I asked him if he worked for Microsoft, he said no, he was with IES, and they were calling to help clean the malware off my computer.  I thanked him for finding out that I had malware and viruses on my computer (I don't), and got the company address (101 California St., San Francisco, CA).  Then I was tired of messing around, and I let him know that the phone call was illegal since my number was on a Do Not Call List, and I did not give them permission to call me.  Since I had the name and address, I would let the Feds know, and I figured the fine was $10,000 per occurrence, so I hoped that he had lots of money. :-) He quickly said they removed my number from their list, and hung up.

Heavy Indian accented male called from 706-805-1362 Hartwell, GA (per my caller ID) and told me I had malware on my Windows based computer and that he would help me find and remove it. Said he was affiliated with MS. I asked how he even knew I had a computer. He said his servers receive messages every time I go on-line. I told him I would have to do some research on him and asked for number to call him back. The number he gave was 415-315-9455 and he said his name was Clifton. According to the posts on this website, this appears to be a scam...just what I thought.  Hope you can do something about it.

I got a call today from the indian-sounding man who told me he worked for IT Emporis Solutions, a partner with Microsoft, and they had received numerous error alerts on their server from my machine. When I checked, there were indeed many errors and warnings on my system.
I realize now how gullible I was and he instructed me to clean out my prefetch files.
Can anyone tell me what harm I have done to my system?

Prank Call
Same deal.  Man with heavy Indian accent - calls to tell me that MY COMPUTER is infected - and he knows this cause he is paid by the people at Microsoft to fix Windows computers when they get infected.  Says he will "walk me thru" the process of "fixing" my computer.
I ask - and am told "there will be on additional charge".

I say " oh... gotta go - can I call you back" - and am given this number 415 315 9455.

This is a scam. Anyone know how they got my name - and how they knew I own a Windows computer.

Screw these people - I hope they burn in Hell.

Just got a call from a very heavy accented person.  He began by wanting to speak with the owner of the registered windows 7 computer in the home - Clue #1.  Anyways, I told him I had a call on the other line and I had to go but to give me his name again (Kevin) and asked for his number and I would call back as this is very important to me (LOL).  I called him back and said, before we get started I need your Microsoft ID number - he gave me 514287.  I said thanks, I would like to speak with his supervisor.  I got his supervisor on the phone and started asking him all about the prefetch folder - he told me it is a malware folder (I am glad that all the malware folks have standards and use the same folders).  I told him it was a load of s*** and that he and his buddy are scamming and to f*** off and not call back.  He laughed and hung up.  Thanks to the folks on this website for posting their experiences.

My mother received call saying there were problems in the area with the Windows Operating Systems; "Mark", foreign accent, charged $149 to her credit card listed as PC Live Support and now has her address.  WOW . . . she was on the phone when I got there; the guy told her to not touch her computer for an hour at least and they would fix everything.  To my knowledge, nothing was wrong . . . I turned it off and told the guy to fax me a copy of the contract that she had signed (supposedly in 2009) . . . still waiting.
