Called and left a voicemail.  Caller ID said "VOIP Caller".

It was a man with a strong accent talking really loud.  I couldn't hear who he was asking for (it was no one in this house), but I made out that it was tax litigation and that the person should call back, or have his attorney call back.  Said the call shouldn't be ignored.

Yeah...okay.  I am sure that the IRS uses VOIP with a "415" area code, from an apparent Indian call center.

Not sure what is sadder - that scams like this exists, or that some people actually fall for them.

So I received a call this morning from the ?IRS Investigation Office? saying I owed money and my case had been opened, my case officer was Michael Carter and that I had to call him back.  Red flags: it was a 415 area code (San Francisco); the woman had a heavy Indian accent; the # I was supposed to call back my officer was the same # she called from; it was a voice-over-IP call; she couldn?t give me a case #; she couldn?t explain why her phone # was CA based instead of DC based.  So I googled the phone # and here?s the scam:
http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-415-323-1082

I have reported it to FTC.gov.  I also called the scammers back for fun, asked for Michael Carter who was not in today, and told them I had reported them to the FTC because I knew they were a scam.  They said ?thank you? and hung up.

I received a call this morning, Saturday.  Indian man, "mr. Bell" claimed the IRS has been trying to reach me by certified mail, but has been unable to deliver.   As a result, he was calling to ask me for my attorney's information as on Monday, a warrant for my arrest would be issued by my local county.

I was told that I needed to pay $4,100 to avoid arrest, and after which they would send me the paperwork to support my criminal and civil charges.  Fortunately, after calling a few relatives in a panic, I was advised it was a scam and to proceed to my local police department.   The police verified that there are no pending warrants, and that if they were indeed the irs to call him directly to discuss.  They they claimed, that they were not the irs, but a collection agency on behalf of the irs.

For those who know tax code, which I now do, they claimed it was for years 2007-2010.   FYI ... Know the statute of limitations which is 3 years.   Therefore, 2007, 2008, and 2009 are not valid.  Furthermore, I had filed jointly for those years, which the caller could not validate.

I am a fairly sensible and educated person, but when they claim that you will be arrested in less than 48 hours,  passport cancelled, etc.,  it is very frightening.   Please stay calm, and do not send the money.   Call theirs instead.  I will be calling on Monday.

Same heavy Indian accent guy called and threatened my parents, my mother hung up on him and he called back saying we owed the IRS money.  Called 3-4 times in a row.  I think the FBI or some other agency needs to find these a$$ holes and get them off the streets from harassing and stealing from honest Americans (especially the older generation).  Karma - maybe there will be another earthquake or something somewhere to clean out this scum group!

They called me & left a message on my answering machine looking for someone with a different first name (sounded like 'Rodney') but the same last name as mine. Guy on the phone had a heavy Indian accent. Told me he was with Tax Litigation Department & that I must not try to disregard the message. Claimed that there was an issue with my income tax & that I should call back with a reference number (520706) that he repeated twice, & talk to Paul Brendan, otherwise legal action would be taken. An obvious scam, since I haven't owed any money to the IRS for several years.

Received v/m from probably same Indian guy as above saying that this message is extremely urgent and sensitive.  Barely understood what he said.  But must call back.  Called back and asked for his company name.  They said it once, but could barely understand.  So asked him to repeat.  Still did not understand.  Then he HUNG up on me.  So I called back 4x because I want to investigate his company.  Each time I called, I was disconnected.  Do not give out any of your personal info.  This is a scam.

Same call from "Ricky" at the IRS tax litigation dept.  Said I had to pay about $5700 "within the next two hours" to avoid being arrested on Monday for tax fraud.  Couldn't say what the issue was, just that errors in my tax return for the past four years.   As soon as I told him I found out it was a scam by Googling the phone number, he said "we'll see what happens on Monday and hung up on me.

I got a call from that same indian guy... had to have him repeat where he is from 3 times to understand he was saying "Tax litigation Department" from the IRS.  He called me from a Californian number 415-323-1082 at 8 am NY time which in California is 5am, not working hours (obviously calling from a remote location).  He told me to call Michael Carter 415-323-1082 and give him some reference number, my Date of Birth and he will tell me what miscalculation i did in my prior years return.  What the indian "IRS" guy could not provide me with was the last 4 digits of my social security number.  That's how I knew it was a scam.  So I called the IRS at 1800-829-1040 and they looked into my case and saw everything was fine and that they did not call me.  I passed on all this information.  Hopefully they catch these guys.

I received a call from 415-323-1082 mentioning that I am in violation of IRS and will be arrested if I don't make a payment by end of day today. I was been asked for my attorney's number and was also been told that all my bank accounts, credit cards etc will be freezed. I was been told that I cannot make a payment through credit card or debit card or wire transfer as there is a criminal charges/offense against me due to unpaid taxes. I was been told that if I don't make a payment of around $7,000.00 today I will be in prison and there will be legal action taken against me and the new charges after legal charge will be around $12,000.00. The only way for me to make payment to them would be through payment voucher which can be purchase from CVS or any other convenience store. Obviously I was a bit scarred however I called IRS to verify if I owe any taxes and was been told that I don't owe anything to IRS at the current moment.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

The caller left message to return the call to Andrew White with a reference number (strong Indian accent, barely decipherable English) stating I must call back to avoid legal action regarding a discrepancy with my income tax.  I called back and woman answered with "Thank you for calling the Internal Revenue Service".  I gave her the reference number, they were looking for someone with my last name, but different first name.
