Rcvd call from 415.662.8528 and was told to call back w/ the case number he gave me and ask for Michael Carter, investigator w/ IRS in San Francisco, Re Deficit of Payment. The scammer/caller (Asian, probably Indian, accent), could not understand the question, "how much do I owe?" -- he said, "eye oh - huh?" He first asked for my lawyer's name/number. I called the number back and it just beeped -- didn't ring, beeped, as when a call is made to a foreign country.

Amazing! Same experience as above.  Just posted so others will know this is still going on...from the same number...using the same names. Should be a way to shut this down.  These guys must be successful with some of their calls and that is really unfortunate.  I could see how honest naïve people might get frazzled when told that they are being investigated / litigated by the IRS/Government and would rush to do anything to protect their good name, without thinking.  Perhaps everyone contacted by these criminal should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission as Ron did.  If anyone has a better idea please post.

The problem is, they could care less about threats like that because they're overseas and know that law enforcement won't touch them. Scammers know that no one in their home countries care if they scam Americans. Just hang up without wasting your breath and block their numbers, although they're just get a new number and try again. For an elderly person, you might just want to change his phone number entirely as they pass around "sucker lists" of senior citizens.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

These people get your numbers from check cashing data bases that have been hacked. From what I understand, they use IOP phones that are virtually untraceable. They have represented themselves as police threatening to arrest you to IRS agents. The best thing to do is hang up, don't engage them they can get nasty. I have reported this number and another to the Federal Trade Comm.

I've received 4 calls from these people (415-662-8528) with the same threats. I verified with the IRS that they are scammers, The Agent recommended I call the local police department; they referred me to the Attorney General's office.  I was told that since no passing of information or money had occurred, there was nothing that could be done and that to hang up on them was the right thing to do.  I agree with the above memo from Angie; this should be considered a Federal Crime, since they're impersonating IRS agents.  I'm surprised that neither the IRS nor the Attorney General's office don't have these people under investigation.

I took a call for my in-laws as they were not home.  Caller had a very, very thick accent and stated that he was from the IRS and gave me a reference number.  The funny thing is, I listened to my voicemail at home with a message from the same caller and a different reference number.  I called the number and when I questioned the gentleman, he hung up on me.  I called and told him this was a scam and he said, "yes this is a scam" and hung up.

I wish these individuals would stop the threaten phone calls for the IRS tax litigation department 415-662-8528 They call me 2 times a day requesting payment.  I realized after speaking to this guy with a heavy accent that they where not the IRS first thing I never received any paper work.  This should be a federal crime they should not be able to harass people everyday or even allowed to impersonate a federal area of the government.

I received a call on 10/23/13 from "Michael Carter" at (415)662-8528. I returned the call today, 10/24/13 and spoke with a heavy AsianMiddle Eastern accented sounding male who rattled off some kind of purported IRS agent number as "Michael Carter" wasn't available, according to the caller. He requested the name and phone number of my lawyer and I said I had no lawyer, and asked what this was about. He stated the fraud unit was processing a warrant for my arrest for $4,129.00 for back taxes and that the Sheriff would be there to arrest me at 11:00 a.m. on 10/25/13 and all matters of bad things would happen to me, including at least 6 months in jail. I asked if we couldn't work this out and he stated yes pay the $4,129.00 or risk jail, sale of my home, and all matters of bad things. I asked how could I pay the money, cash, check. He didn't want it paid through eftps, but for me to get the cash and call him back when I had it, (I had to do this before 4 today) and I was to go to a Vons Market and once there to call him and he would give me instructions on what to do.  I called back, Jennie (heavy Asian/Middle Eastern accent answered and passed me to "Tray Bell" ,IRS # 900128816,and offered $1,000.00 today and the balance tomorrow. I was placed on "hold" for a hot second for him to get the ok.  I go it and asked for the case number of the case filed against me, he said it had been filed in the Northern District Court of California,as this was where their office was located, he gave me case number IJ28528 as my criminal case number. I asked why wasn't the case filed in the Central District he stumbled very badly. THen I told him that I was aware this was a scam and would report him to the IRS and FBI.

Have the same message three times, using my name, alarmingly garbled by a non-English speaker, on my voicemail. Strangely, the message is recorded and is apparently robocalled to our number. As with others above, he said he was from the IRS and was vaguely threatening. It was clearly illegitimate, which is why I googled the number.

Oh God--This company is the worst and the person I spoke to can't even speak english and is so rude.  He gave the name of Andrew, and the phone number 415-662-8528, stating he is local (NOT).  He asked for an employee here and repeatedly called back 3 times.  He said he is with the IRS and gave us a reference number.
I called the local number and what it does is it routes the calls, I presume overseas for some type of scam.
