This is a good company and once you commit a donation they will send you all the paperwork thru the mail. The money is used for a police organized athletic group that will help to keep kids off the streets.

The caller identified himself as from the Police Athletic League.  I am always afraid to say no to charities that say they are from police because I am afraid one of their members may later try to cite me for some imaginary infraction, or not come to the house if I call 911 to report a prowler.  I suppose that's silly, but it's in the back of my mind.

I gathered my nerve up and told this man I only consider solicitations that come through the mail, but he persisted until I said "Bye, now" repeatedly and finally just hung up. I hope I don't later regret this.  I always vote for police levies and sometimes give to real charitable organizations that benefit police or fire, but I just don't believe this one is real.

I used to give to an organization in Warren, Ohio, which claimed to benefit police, but they always sent somebody around to collect cash, and always tried to cajole me into giving more than the $15 I thought I could afford.  Later somebody told me they were in fact connected to the police, but they were a recreational motorcycle club.

I have to wonder how they get away with using a caller ID that calls them "The State of Ohio."

Received call on Saturday August 2, 2008 at 9:14AM. How many state agencies have non-essential employees working on Saturday??? This number is NOT from the "State of Ohio" but rather, located in the state of OH. Don't be fooled by telephone solicitors claiming to raise money for various law enforcement departments. They are independent contractors getting a commission for money raised while they harass you.

I received a call on Monday afternoon 8/11/08 at 5:35pm stating they were from PAL to keep kids in my neighborhood off drugs.  I asked the caller to send me something in the mail, and he in turn responded they were a non-profit and the mailings cost money and if I didn't donate then they couldn't send me something in the mail, they in turn could not pay for.  The caller talked so fast that I could barely understand them.

I received a call at 12:45 today, a Saturday, while I was out.  Caller I. D. said The State of Ohio.  They left no message, and I, too, wondered who from the State was calling on a Saturday afternoon.  Thanks to the previous comments I won't answer the call if I'm here.

I received a call today 8/28/2008 at 3:38pm. The caller identified hmself as calling for PAL. He pressed me to commit to giving a donation. I told him that we donate to sepcific charities and have reached our limit. He wnet on to tell me how they are one of the only charities who keep their money in our county, blah, blah, blah!!! He finally accepted my response. When I did a reverse phone number look up it said they were based in Pensacola, FL. Uh, no thank you....he tried three times to pronounce my last name without any success. He also could not pronouce my street name which has just three letters in it, lol!

After 1 month or so of "State of Ohio, The" appearing on my caller ID, having left the answering machine answer the call and the caller continually hanging up on it,  I thought perhaps it could be something important from the state of Ohio, like income tax matters, etc.
I picked up on the last call only to find a southern-drawled man's voice (not the way Ohians talk) giving a speech about keeping kids off drugs and asking to send me a packet.  I promptly said no thankyou and hung up.
This bothered me for awhile because of the misrepresentation of the caller being the state of Ohio, so later I looked it up in the business directory of the local phone book.  It says State of Ohio, The, Pensacola Florida, Olmsted Falls number.
I decided to call the Olmsted Falls police to report what I think is a scam and was told they have no interest and didn't even want the number and that it is known the organization hires outside contractors and I should call the BBB.  Later that week, the local Sun News reported a rash of scams in their city which were bilking mostly elderly residents of thousands of dollars.  One would think that the police would have been more interested in my complaint from a neighboring city of a potential scam.
This outfit might be legit, who knows if the cops don't even know?  What galls me and makes me suspicious is that they use the ID of the State of Ohio----there ought to be a law forbidding this!  One positive note:  Once I had answered the call, there have been no further daily hangup calls from this source since.

Phone rang twice at 8:42 Pm on Oct. 6th.  When I answered, nobody was there.  After saying "Hello" several times, I hung up.  My caller id identifies the phone number as" 440-235-4708 and as THE STATE OF OH

I am getting calls daily from this number also...I figured it was some police organization solicitating...but you really don't know if its to benefit your area...They are very persistant...It does make you wonder if they will retaliate if you don't donate...scary we should feel that way...

This caller refuses to identify himself and will not leave a message. He asks for a specific person and when told that he/she is not available, hangs up. As others have said the calls are always on weekends.

Tried calling back and get a  full mailbox belonging to  "fundraising office."

The police aren't allowed to call you due to the fact that it may influence your decision to give. I know this because I work for the fundraising office chosen by PAL to call people. This charity is not "bogus".

Beware that this is an esepcially nasty scam in that they've registered the number as "The State of Oh" and they have nothing at all to do with the State of Ohio.  They just want the Caller ID to trick unsuspecting callers - probably especially the elderly - to think they are legitmate.  Shame on them!

It looks from the other posts here that this is for a non-profit agency, but seeing how they are being deceitful even with their Caller ID, I am classifying this as a telemarketer rather than non-profit.

A man named Quinn called at 9:00PM stating he was from PAL (Police Athletic League), which supports the D.A.R.E programs in local communities.  He asked if they could count on my support.  When I told him I was currently unemployeed and was sorry I couldn't help he persisted.  He asked me if I was "trying to say I had fallen on hard times?" & I said yes.  Then he asked if I would give at least $5 or $10 and I said "no, I am sorry" and he processed to slam the phone down on me!  I called the number back & got a voice mail saying I had reached "the fund raisng office".   It was Quinn's voice!

I saw State of Ohio on caller ID so I answered like a dummy.  He asked if my husband was available (by name) and I said not at that moment and before I could finish asking if I could take a message, I heard click and he was gone.  I'll never pick up on this call again.

The caller very enthusiastically asked if I was Mister Landis.  I don't think I've ever been mistaken for a man on the phone before?  When he found out I was somebody entirely different, he launched into a spiel.  I said if he was trying to solicit a contribution, I do not contribute to appeals over the phone. He said, "Oh, we only operate by mail." (Huh?  He had just called me on the phone.)

He would not shut up.  He would not let me sign off.  He said he was going to "educate me."  I was a bit frightened.  I would not have answered, except that the caller ID said "The State of Ohio."   But he said he was from the Police Athletic League.   I find this very intimidating.  When the police call you, you automatically wonder if you have a forgotten parking ticket, or if a loved one has been injured in an accident.

But was he a policeman?  I wonder.

I used to give to a phone soliciting organization in Warren, Ohio, which claimed to benefit police, but they always sent somebody around to collect cash, and often tried to cajole me into giving more than the $15 I thought I could afford.  Later somebody told me they were in fact connected to the police, but they were a recreational motorcycle club.

It was very hard to get rid of this guy.

It's not true, incidentally that repeatedly pressing 2 on your keypad will disconnect these calls and ensure that they won't call you again -- I tried it.

Some southern-accented jerk just called from this number, identified himself as "Member of the Police Athletic League" burped into the phone then asked for my deceased father. When I persisted on asking whom he is, he said that he already told me whom he was and asked if my father was there or not. I told him to take us off his list and never call again - he replied that he'll call whenever he wants to and hung up. I called the number back and got a recording that the voice mail box was full.
