The problem with voice mail is that it gives the caller hope.  I have caller ID and never answer.  In 1996 my bank sent my new checks to my old address so my account information was stolen.  The perpetrators set up a credit account called CompuCard and this debt has been sold so many times that it is now back to the people who had it in the first place!  Sending them the information that this account was not created by me, but by criminals who stole my identity did not make them destroy the claim.  To get some of their money back, they just sell it to another company.  So, here we are in 2013 and the debt is still floating around out there.  When I left a message for these people on my answering machine, all it did was verify that that was my valid phone number so they just kept calling.  Then some people I don't know started giving my number to their debt collectors and when I'd try to explain that to these people, again, all it did was encourage them.  One woman said, "Well you'd better find out how we can contact them or we're just going to keep calling you."  You can't reason with such ignorance.  What made them stop calling was not answering the phone....ever.  They eventually gave up and quit calling.  So, my advice is do what the person did that has their call-blocking hang up on the caller.  If they get voice mail, they note their file and it is put into their computer to call again.

Stevenson's former company Household Bank, a subsidiary of HSBC (Honk Kong & Shanghai Banking Co.), cited as primary money launderer for terrorists and drug dealers.  My sources on that include NY Times and Wall Street Journal.  No wonder he would up at Portfolio Recovery, which mostly buys debt collection of which by legal means is outlawed by applicable statutes of limitations so anything they threaten you with is either a lie or otherwise illegal.  Except for child molesters, and some of them work as collectors, these collectors are the lowest form of life.  I worked my way through a semester of law school as one with a pretty decent local agency but have seen too much from both sides as an attorney, etc.  Only other debt I have seen them go after was one held by World Financial Capital Bank a very questionable "bank" that had bought a disputed account and run up debt from $70 to over $700 in a couple of months after refusing to provide amount needed to pay per month or in full while debtor wife hospitalized, and tried to con husband into paying amount of very generous offer above amount due without releasing.

Here are some really cool YouTube sites that might help those who need to fight off Portfolio Recovery Service's harassment. But BEWARE, you might first laugh your head off with the first video! The last video is "R" rated.

This is Portfolio Recovery Service, a debt collection company.  They have been calling my house 3 times a day for the past 10 years.  They stated I owed over $4,000 to Lane Bryant.  First of all, that shop is for very large size women.  I am not a large woman or a small woman, in fact I am a man!  and have no cause to use that shop.  Second of all EVERYONE START INDICATING TO THEM "THERE IS A $10,000 FINE FOR EACH TIME YOUR PHONE NUMBER OCCURS ON MY PHONE BILL. I HAVE REPORTED YOU TO THE FTC AND YOU ARE BEING DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY"    They will stop calling, but you need to follow through and contact the FTC for harrassing calls...and they WILL be fined

O.K. This is Portfolio Recovery Services' modus operandi:

I moved to Colorado 9 years ago from another state. Upon moving here, I got my current phone number. Almost immediately I started getting calls for an "Angela Braxton" from a collection agency. During 2004 and 2005, I called Portfolio Recovery Services (PRS) numerous times to let them know that I'm not Angela Braxton and have no idea who she is. PRS ignored my pleas to stop calling and kept calling me anyway, sometimes day and night.

Finally, I got the feature from Qwest (now CenturyLink) that allows a person to block 25 numbers. Over the next few years, I kept blocking numbers from PRS. As you poor guys know, PRS will then start calling from a different number. Eventually, I ran out of blocking possibilities. So I cleaned out all those 25 blocked numbers and started afresh. As usual, I continue to get calls from PRS asking for Angela Braxton. I keep blocking the new numbers PRS uses to call its "victims."

At 8:46 this morning I got another call from PRS which went to messages. In the meantime I decided to enjoy this constant harassment and have a little fun at their expense. I decided, "O.K., I'll pretend to be Angela Braxton" and returned their call claiming to be Angela Braxton.

They wanted to know if my address is in Aurora. It is not, and so I said so. On second thought, I should have said "Yes." PRS' second question was about my social security number, giving the last 4 digits of what Angela's social security number is supposed to be. Again, I said that was not my SS number, which is true.

And then I blew it big time. They started asking other questions. I said I could not help them because I was not the Angela Braxton they were looking for. When they started to ask for information about me, I said "You have no idea who I am, where I live, what my SS number is. You know nothing about me, so just try to go after me for whatever you want!"

Now, maybe if I've planted some good ideas in those of you who might be more creative than I am, go to it! Let's have a little fun and help stop this nonsense. Maybe if everyone pitched in and shared their experiences here as to what they tried and how successful their efforts were, we might hit on an idea or two that will make this type of harassment come to a screeching halt!

Bon voyage!

portfolio recovery calls with a different number every time, i have heard they have so many numbers you can't possibly block all of them. they kept calling my cell and they ask me if i knew the person they were calling and i told them i did not and not to call anymore , so far they haven't called back on my cell phone. they keep calling the land line all the time. verizon only allows you to block 12 numbers. i don't know if we switched to a different phone company we would be able to keep our same phone number we have had for years. another scam to watch out for is all the medical alert systems.

LOL, I agree with Meeee--Change their name to A**folio Recovery.

Got one call this morning around 10am.  The so-caller ID just said "Unknown Name".  I knew it had to be just another one of Portfolio Recovery's numbers, or another scam/debt collector.

I've been calls from collection agencies since 2009 looking for someone else.  Most gave up after a few weeks or months, but not Portfolio Recovery.  Calling and calling since July 2011.

I never picked up these calls.  They keep calling and I keep not answering.  If convenient, I hang up them.  That's what they will do anyway.  I've had my number over 10 years.

I don't have this Google voice thing or anything it seems you need a computer for.  "Old fashioned" (not digital) phone with a machine on it.

My rule is to not answer any calls from numbers I don't recognize.

I have gotten calls from this number for over 4 years.  They do not speak very good english.
They won't send anything in the mail.  If they would I would write on the envelope:

RETURN TO SENDER

UNACCEPTABLE MAIL

18 USC 1342

FICTITIOUS NAME OR ADDRESS

and send it back----but they don't want to send any real information!

To block most calls on android, download an app called Mr. Number.  It may be available on Iphone too.  You can set it to block suspected spam calls as well as any other number or part of nukber.
I currently uave it block all 800, 877, 888, 866 and suspected spam.  My phone rarely rings any more.

In the past few weeks I've been getting phone calls from this number:  443.313.1381.  I have a personal rule that if I don't know or recognize a phone number when it calls me I don't answer it.  If it's important enough or if the person really wants to talk to me they can leave a voicemail message.  These people never leave a message.  How do I get them to stop calling me?  On my phone I only see the phone number, there is no company name or personal name attached to it.

I don't want to get anymore phone calls from this number.

Thank you.

If you have high speed internet, get the phone company VOIPo.  You can create a whitelist and ONLY those on that list can call you!  All other calls can be sent to a disconnected tone, voicemail, busy signal, etc...  Check it out at voipo.com.

I for one am pleased with this annoying company. Hear me out, lol. I have recently become divorced and apparently have a mystery debt. After looking into it it seems that one of my former inlaws stole my identity to turn their gas on in a state I wasn't living in. the plot thickens. They apparently got my contact info when I was signing up to get my credit scores.

This number and similar numbers have been calling several times over the past week, all of which I've missed because the calls were at inconvenient times. Yesterday I got a call at 4 am, then tonight just now at 7:45 pm. Finally was able to answer tonight. The caller did NOT identify herself or her company and asked for "Angela". I replied that there was not and never had been an Angela at the number that was dialed (which I've had for over 10 years). I asked for her to update her records, and she asked if I had an alternate number for Angela. Angela WHO? I asked to speak with a supervisor, and the original caller got extremely irate. Eventually a "supervisor" named Ken Dayton got on the line, and he did identify himself and his company as Portfolio Recovery Service. He asked me why Angela would provide my phone number in her record. I sarcastically replied that I have no idea why someone who is in collections would give a false phone number. Ken Dayton asked why I thought he was a collection agent. What part of "recovery service" am I misunderstanding? What a swell job this must be, I'd rather flip burgers or sweep floors.
