Do not call this number back, do not return a call from any 473 area code number unless you know for certain who called you (family, friend, co-worker).  This call is from Granada, a country that does not have to observe the rules and regulations of the United States and Canada.

The scammers who called you want you to call them back.  When you do they get to charge you a surcharge for making an international call.  From the various threads I have sampled so far they seem to have been working a bank of numbers in the 473-520-97## range since November.

Check out the post by ANonieMouse at http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-473-520-9754/3#p658883862900089215 for a plethora of information about this scam.

ROFL Geographically challenged a bit there Me? I bet you can find Timbuktu in California also, along with Oroville and Marysville.  All common names for Cities in many states. "Timbucktoo Africa" is usually a joke played/sarcasm but they actually exist in the former spelling..  though both are correct spellings.
Might want to look at the number and Info up on the right of threads that shows where its from before making yourself look silly ..

FWIW, don't laugh too much about Timbuktu in Ca. Its a Ghost town in the Feather River Canyon..

>>> You guys are ridiculous. Grenada is in Northern California. It's where the call is from. <<<

THAT one had me laughing so hard, I almost couldn't breathe!!

From Wikipedia at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grenada,_California :

"Grenada (grin-A-dah) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 367 at the 2010 census, up from 351 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code is 96038 and the area code 530. ...
"... According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), 99.77% of it land and 0.23% of it water."

I can just imagine an entire town of 367 people and half a square mile having their area code changed to 473 so they could have enough telephone banks to keep the entire population employed making nuisance calls to the entire United States during the post-midnight to pre-dawn hours!  ROTFLMAO!!!

It's very likely that you will.  Please let us know if you do.

Here is a possible explanation for these calls:
BBB Alert: Scammers call from strange number, rack up huge phone bill

http://www.toledonewsnow.com/story/23695832/b ... huge-phone-bill

Although certain specific area codes are mentioned in the article, it would be quite easy to generalize the scam to other countries in the Caribbean.

The latest crop of phone calls also seem to be slightly different from the scam being described in the article because the caller doesn't have any intention of talking to you.  All the scammer wants is that you get upset enough about the late night call that you return the call, never even noticing that it is from a foreign country outside the reach of US or Canadian laws.  When you return the call (at international rates), there is also a big surcharge to your phone bill that gets passed along to the scammer.

That's why either:
(1) you can't return the phone call, because even though you would otherwise be able to dial it like an ordinary long distance number, you phone company has a restriction on your placing international calls (which these are).  If so, consider yourself lucky.  Or,
(2) when you call back and get through, they keep you on hold for as long as possible to run up your phone bill and their profits.

The scammers don't have to be associated with recent security breaches.  All they have to do is randomly dial a lot of telephone numbers in already-assigned area codes.  And they must be dialing a LOT of them based on the complaints logged to 800notes.  It probably doesn't cost them anything to dial, either, if the called party (you) doesn't pick up the call before they hang up.

It only takes a small percentage of angry and/or curious people calling back for them to make a lot of money.  They don't even have to pay for real people to operate a call center -- it's all done by machines, outside the reach of US and Canadian law enforcement.

I just called back 473 -520-9711.  It kept telling me to wait for an operator, then it hung up.  I did an area code search.  It's the island of Grenada.  It's a scam.  Now, they know it's a working number.  I hope I don't start getting international calls billed to my #.  If you see area code 473, don't call back.  Delete it!

got the call at 2:13 AM EST, didn't answer because I was asleep.

I was curious this morning as to where Grenada was and why someone would call so late at night, so I called back. the line was kinda creepy/dark/seemed like it could be a prostitution or drug cartel line...don't know, but a woman said "welcome to our services. please wait for the operator." then this weird techno music started playing and I listened closely and towards the end of the song I could hear a man speaking in Spanish in the background?? don't know, but it freaked me out. hope I don't get charged for calling them back!!!

Everyone on my phone plan has started to get these UNKNOWN calls for the past few days, about 4-8 calls per day, with either the 59 at the end or 10, or 60, or 59, or 54, or 19.  I think they are varying the last two digits to get someone to blink and answer...but no way we've just been ignoring these.  How do they get everyone on our phone plan...do they have access through AT&T?

this is screwed up I got calls from 2 of these numbers and they call in the middle of the night I'm on straight talk so the calls are being made from an app because if they were from another country I would not be receiving them due to the fact I don't have international calling also a theory is if you answer and you have a smart phone there's a chance your phone will be leeched of your bank info and PayPal and other personal or business accounts on ur phone again just a theory

Is your phone number between (000) 000-0000 and (999) 999-9999? It is! Well you see even the cheapest robo-dialer, with the IQ of an Atari can find you. Do not call list & all. Think of your phone as you do your car, & home. Secure it.

I got a call from 473-520-9759 but didn't hear phone ring. Since strange number looked it up. My concern is that I rarely give my cell number to anyone I do not know.  Scary when they can get my number from somewhere.  Even on the do-not-call list.  What happened to security?

Received a call at 12:15am from 473-520-9759 (Grenada). Didn't answer, I was asleep like most adults, Googled the number, saw it was international, didn't call back. Texted the number, it went through, no response.

Oh & by the way. For your enlightenment I will try to explain in simple terms what these calls are doing. First, they are not the feds. trying to catch you at something you only dream you were capable of. They are a bunch of scammers in Grenada doing a massive robo-dialing campaign. Their aim is to get you to return their calls. You will pay extremely high intl. long distance rates if you do. From which they will receive a cut. They will also then have you on a list of "live" contacts which will be sold to scammers around the globe. That's pretty much it.
It's not the NSA. It's not the "M.I.B.". Those helicopters hovering over you aren't the feds. either. They're the local TV stations traffic 'copters. And the guy on the corner isn't watching you. He's selling $10 bags.
