Several of us have gotten the one ring call, Do Not Call back! they direct you through a number they control and bill you a bunch. It is a scam!
They never let it ring long enough for you to answer, they want you to call back.

Received a call from this number on my cell phone at 5:30 in the morning. Rang only once and I stupidly hit the send button to call it back because it looked like a domestic U.S. telephone number and shockingly it was the sound of two people having sex. Verizon was nice enough to reverse the $1.69 charge on my wireless account and they also blocked the number from ever calling me again. It is a number in the country of GRENADA. DO NOT CALL IT BACK! otherwise you'll get charged a per minute International rated call.

I also received a call from this telephone number early Sunday morning around 6AM.  The location posted was Grenada so I knew for sure it had to be some kind of scam.  I did not call back but if you have an iPhone, you can block the number immediately.

473 "AREA CODE" WARNING -- DO NOT RETURN DIAL ONE RING CALLS RECEIVED FROM AREA CODE 473 !!!!!!

In the current variant of this scam, the caller doesn't have any intention of talking to you. All the scammer wants is for you to get upset enough about the late night call that you return the call, never even noticing that it is from a foreign country outside the reach of US or Canadian laws. When you return the call (at international rates), there may also be a big surcharge added to your phone bill that gets passed along to the scammer.

What appears to have been the original version of the scam surfaced about 11 years ago in Japan and is known as the "Wangiri scam:"

I don't think this problem is limited to or has anything to do with Verizon.  The same problem has been reported on other carriers, I believe, but Verizon Wireless appears to be the biggest carrier, so they get the most calls.  Verizon has a discussion board set up with at least one thread concerning "473" calls:

It appears that at least Verizon is devoting some resources to stop these callers or at least refund some or all of the charges for people who call these numbers.  How long that will last is known only to Verizon, and even they may not have decided at this point.  Other carriers may also be doing the same.  They all want to avoid bad publicity that may drive away customers, of course.

At least one early report on 800notes.com, if taken at face value, asserted that a charge of $100.00 was made to a phone bill for calling back for 15 seconds.  Even regular calls to 473 numbers are billed at upwards of $1.80 per minute by most cell phone carriers, even on so-called "unlimited" phone plans, unless you have paid extra for an international dialing plan.  It may be that the scammers get a cut of this money for every international call they receive.

That's why either:
(1) you can't return the phone call, because even though you would otherwise be able to dial it like an ordinary long distance number, you phone company has a restriction on your placing international calls (which these are).  At least some pre-paid cell phone services work this way.  If this case applies to you, consider yourself lucky. Or,
(2) when you call back and get through, the operator of the 473 phone number tries to keep you on hold for as long as possible to run up your phone bill and their profits.

The scammers don't have to be associated with recent security breaches, such as the recent one at Target stores.  (In fact, many of the victims of this scam say that they either don't shop at Target or did not shop there during the period of the known security breach.)  All the scammers have to do is randomly dial a lot of telephone numbers in already-assigned area codes. And they must be dialing a LOT of them based on the complaints logged to 800notes.

It probably doesn't cost them anything to dial you, either, if the called party (you) doesn't pick up the call before they hang up. It only takes a small percentage of angry and/or curious people calling back for them to make a lot of money. They don't even have to pay for real people to operate a call center -- it's all done by machines, outside the reach of US and Canadian law enforcement.

So do yourself a favor and don't call these scammers back.  And you'll also be doing us all a favor, because they wouldn't call anyone at all if there weren't so many people who fell for this scam.

Just called me it's midnight I answered someone said hello then It disconnected.  I searched the number and found this site.

Got this call at 9am Central. Rang once and hung up. My wife also got the call with one ring and hangup. Came here and so glad neither of us were able to answer. For those needing to block calls on their mobile phone for free, I recommend "Mr. Number-Block calls, texts" It has worked really well for me.

This number called me at 5:35am!!!

I got a call at 7 this morning, when I called back it was just a

This number called me at 9:47am in Sunday. They left no message.

I got a call at 3:31 a.m. This morning my wife got a call at 4 a.m. This morning we did not recognize the number and did not pick up the phones...luckily.

Same # called me at 5:57 a.m. Came up as Grenada on my Verizon phone.

That number just called me @ 542am not happy . Didn't get to it in time. Really!

473-520-9783 called my cell phone (Virgin Mobile service) at 1:20am. My girlfriend and I were asleep in my bed and that phone call woke us up. By the time I reached for the phone it had stopped ringing. It did not ring enough times for my voicemail to answer the call. Meanwhile, my girlfriend got upset with me because she thought the call was from some other woman making a booty call to me. I get woken up and abused by my girlfriend. Sheesh. Happy New Year everyone.

Received the phone from 473-520-9783 at 8:10 P.M. last. There was a LOT of weird noises in the background, then a live person came on, not speaking English, and hung up on me. It was NOT the run of the mill telemarketing phone call, it just had eerie over feeling to it.

After reading all the comments thank goodness I didn't answer the call from 473-520-9783, I would've been super pissed off to wake up to stupid call like that, n be warned that it's not just at&t or verizon it's also happening to boost mobile costomers (-_-)

Yeah same here again. Actually it's more than just this number in the 473-520-97xx block of numbers. Time to switch phone company service providers. For as much as they charge, they should not have these problems nearly as often as they do!

Same here just miss a call from the same number wonder why we all getting calls from this number.

I'm with Verizon. Same # as above called both my work & personal cell phones.
