Got weird message that my card with a local credit union has been deactivated - I was to all this number to re-activate it.  I do not have any accounts with the listed credit union.  I did call the number from an internet phone and all it asked was I enter in my 16-digit card number.  BeWare!  I did call it to the attention of the credit union listed on the original voice message (all computerized which adds to the 'mystery').

Got similar message to what 'Chad' had.  Called and entered in bogus credit card number, it then asked for expiration date and then pin number.  I entered in random digits and it accepted it all.  IT IS A TELECOM PHISHING SCAM - DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!

This number is related to a phising scam. I got a phone call last night saying that my debit card was deactivated and this was the number they gave to call to "reactivate" the card. I didn't release any information and I called my bank about it this morning and they stated that it is in fact a scam. Beware!

MY CELL PHONE HAD A VOICEMAIL MESSAGE WITH AN AUTOMATED VAOICE SAYING MY COMMUNITY FIRST C.U. CARD HAS BEEN SUSPENDED.  I HAD TO CALL THIS NUMBER TO RE-ACTIVATE IT.  THE PROBLEM I HAD HERE IS I DON'T HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THIS C.U.  I DID NOT RETURN THE CALL BUT INSTEAD ENTERD THE NUMBER ON THE "WHO CALLED ME LIST" AND FOUND ALL THESE SIMILAR SITUATIONS LISTED HERE.  AS YOU CAN SEE...I TOO DID NOT RETURN A CALLBACK TO THIS "BOGUS" 1 515-414-2686.

Ok, lets answer everyone's questions about this number since it is multi-city, multi-bank, multi-state.  First off i'd like to recommend that people don't bother paying for any service to try and look up the number as Jonathan posted.  It won't tell you anything more than what i'm about to (and no, I didn't have to pay for it either :P)  Looking up the number... ok, shows as an iowa area code... That's nice it's in iowa, it's pretty obvious.  However, the service is BASED in iowa that was being used (freedigits.com), SOOO.. since the number BELONGS to them and they have numbers in that area, doesn't mean that's where the user was.  Ever used grand central?  Or Vonage?  All of them allow you to plunk your number from anywhere that they have numbers available.  Friend of mine lives in illinois now.. and has a florida phone number.  Second off, the service (freedigits.com) isn't going to tell you anything.  They will claim that they don't know anything, but as with anything, there are logfiles that will be required to be in place and the person responsible is going to get caught.  If you got a message that stated you were to call the number, obviously don't.. and most people wouldn't but the nieve few, will.. and have the same amount of fun cleaning up their bank accounts.  My third point, even if you are reading this and have not gotten notice directly from your bank.. Do everyone a favor and contact the bank in case they haven't heard from anyone else yet, especially if it's a smaller bank or credit union, which is what this scammer seems to have been targeting.  One thing to note as a closing comment... they didn't obtain or hack records or get telephone lists.  They are targeting cities where a smaller bank exists.. and calling numbers of people in that city that aren't even members of the bank.  Very hit and miss method, but sadly it works.  As always if someone claims to be your bank whether it's phone, email, etc... you should always get name and return number and what it's regarding, and call them back (and use their listed number, not the number that you are provided with).. and you should never email your banking information out... i think most people have that one down pat now.
