I think Mr. B is right.  I just got a call from this number, it was the hiring manager for a job I applied to at V-tech, she was trying to set up an interview!

It's the VT Annual Fund call center, calling alumni for contributions.

I get these calls and have never had any affiliation with Va Tech - and I don't live near a university either. No one ever talks. They just hang up. Very annoying. Someone needs to figure this out. There is no way I am in your data base as you suggest.

my call today was from a young woman who explained that VT was doing a 2 year driver survey of persons who live near a college setting (Penn State  10 miles from me) $500 pay per year but you have to let them install a camera and a recorder for your instruments on your vechicle. four hours installation time. records where you go how fast time etc. told them to give me more info. a few question on type of vech, model year, over 18, no other drivers etc.

i got a call from this number and i am not even a VA tech alum - never went there.  Left a 2sec blank message on voicemail

Alright, let me just clarify this for everyone. I'm a Virginia Tech student and work as a caller for their calling center. The confusion about this number lies in the way the Virginia Tech phone system operates. Basically there is a bank of lines that are computer controlled and when a certain office is calling it randomly assigns an outgoing phone number from the bank. That's why different people claim the call is from different divisions of Virginia Tech.

That being said, I work in the call center and when it's students calling you it's for a variety of reasons. Sometimes we're calling alumni, other times we're calling parents of students, and sometimes we call other people of interest with an affiliation to the university. We always call to update information, share some information about whatever your affiliation may be (maybe info about your major or about general student programs, etc) Then, sometimes, we ask if you would be interested in making a donation to a specific program.

As for where we get phone numbers and do-not-call stuff, all numbers we have come from a database supplied by the student (their number and their parents) or from another voluntary source. We do not data mine or research numbers. With that being said, since we're a non-profit its exempt from the do-not-call registry and a confirmation process will have to be done to ensure we only remove people who definitely don't want to be called (usually done by confirming your address and sending a confirmation letter)

Just got a call from this.  Two rings, picked it up, immediate disconnect.  

Tech alumni, class of 2001.   Some buggy/annoying software that's verifying if alumni phone numbers in the database are valid, perhaps?

Most of the time, outgoing calls from the Virginia Tech Blacksburg, Virginia campus appear on your caller ID as 540-231-9891. It does not matter which department or college is calling, most of the time it will appear as that number.

I have received this call several times, one ringer and hang up. Phishing call maybe to sell data from va tech records to some slime-coated company. An insider deal to get some money for each valid ph number & email address and who knows what else - ssn for china???

This is the 2nd time we received a call.  This time I picked up and no one answered.
