I received a message that is somewhat of a conglomerate of those detailed above.  I'm glad it's been reported here as a scam and will not be answering should they keep calling.  Thankfully, the only number they have (since I did fill out a 'email me with info' form on a payday loan, though I never took the loan or completed an app) is my google number...so they've officially been marked as spam.

It is alarming though.  And might I add rather sad that attempting to scam others over the phone is what someone came up with.

I keep getting calls from Michael Smith asking me to call him back at this #.  He's got a very heavy accent too.  I can't understand much of what he says in his messages. I haven't called back.  I got calls daily from him about a month ago for a week or two, then they stopped and have just now started up.  My co-worker gets them as well.

Fortunately on any payday loans I had, I didn't give them my correct phone # for work... I fudged it on purpose so that I wouldn't get calls at work. So the only # they have to call me is my cell. I just don't answer it and figure they'll eventually give up when they realize they won't get any $$ from me.  I knew it was a scam the minute I heard his message.... but I don't know that there's much anyone can really do about it, honestly.

They keep calling me everyday and I have no idea why.  Robert Santos (heavy accent)  - can barely understand him - wants me or my attorney to call him back and says if I don't call back, all he can do is "wish me good luck" because he is coming after me.

I had this same number try to call me at work.  He said (w/ a foreign accent) that his name was Russell Smith.  When I returned the call, he tried saying that I owed them money. That they were not a collection agency and they would "come take me from work".  I told them that it was illegal to call my place of employment and if it was real that they had to send me some written statement first.  I actually had to call them twice b/c they kept hanging up on me! Ha..if this was a REAL legal agency I highly doubt that they would use such immature acts because I was not yelling, just asking for specific information that they couldn't supply!  I will be reporting this to consumer affairs..

Received a call from this number at my work about 945am. Thfirst guy I talked said his name was Glenn Smith, I think, very hard to understand, heavy accent, when I staryed asking him questions he put his supervisor on the phone and his name was Mark Red.  I asked hin again where he was calling from and he just said cyber crime division and stated thet I took out a payday loan but he could not give me the company name of who was suing me and filing charges against me for not repaying a payday loan. I have had payday loans out but I know they have been paid since last year.  Mr. Red could not tell me who the company was making these accusations and kept telling me very rudely "do you understand i am the company and kept saying he was from Federal Bank Division and you took out a loan and didnt pay it back" I have no idea who the company is making these allegations against me and he could not tell me.  Mr. Red also told me that officers would come to my place of work and arrest me and serve me with a affadavit to take me to court at 11am on Tuesday. I asked him which court and he got mad. He then told me that I have till 2pm today to call him and tell him if I am going to pay and settle out of court.  I got mad and told him never to call me at work again. It is a little unerving to me that he had all my correct information and I am a little scared because he said he was going to call my supervisor and tell them I commited fraud.  I dont know what company he is calling about.  I am not going to send someone money and I dont know where its going or what it is for.  I am scared I need my job and I if I owe something I will make arrangements to pay, but not to someone I can barely understatnd what they are saying.    Should I be scared?

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam

January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers.   Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid.  Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago.  The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names.  It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.

When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.

If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.

A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.

?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.

?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

Yesterday I recieved a phone call claiming I owe a pay day loan of 610.00, and the people that were calling me were saying they were from some cyber officer of crime or something like that...I know this is a scam because i never in my life ever applied for a payday loan, I even went to my bank and there was no transactions of this so called payday loan...These so called cyber crime officers were threatning me  that they were going to sue me and come to my place of employment as long as to come to my residence to serve me with papers, So i call my local police station...and had them call these people,,they must have got scared, because they kept hanging up on the police officer.

But I would like to know how we can make these ridiclious phone calls stop.
