Hi, y'all I received call today and left a VM message.  See other notes, same spiel: lawsuit, garnish my wages in which BTW I am retired from Uncle Sam!  Uncle Sam OPM would need court order to do this!  But the cow porker from India or Pakistan was "really nice", gave me two whole days to call back!  That is so generous.  Also, watch out for same type of call from 888-285-3769.  Number is added to my contacts on my BB as Do Not answer, goin' to be arrested or sued!  I too pray and wonder who gets SCAMMED on this and other types of these annoyin' calls!  Pray that folks are not swindled.  BTW, be careful of on line datin'\Match services, here in central VA last week like a 60 year old woman was swindled out of 315K as she and this guy emailed each other and he "promised" to get her rich by investin' the money in bonds and so on!  He was out of Florida and I want to say but not 100% sure it was Match.com

They are located in India.   The US government can't at present do anything,  and the Indian government rarely , if ever does anything.

Call blocker is your best bet.  Can't believe they'd actually call someone and use the name Robin Hood!  This is beyond stupid, even for Indian scammers.
Tired of them!

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

I don't think this is his real voice.  I can't tell you how many times I got a call from someone for any reason and it's the same voice.  There mus be something they use to make all of these callers sound the same and to frustrate you because you can't understand what they're saying.  I'm retired so I don't have am employer for them to contact. Has anyone asked what information they have on your employer?

Got a call today....again YAWN... from YET another man with a Indian accent that left a message not giving his name or even the name of the person he was looking for. Threatening a law suit and garnishing wages the number he called from was 561-  235-7159 which I called back and got a recording saying this # was not in service. He left another # to call back 929-268-1978, just for the heck of it I called HOPING to reach an actual person but didn't just got another recording from YET another (AND I USE THE WORD loosely man) with an Indian accent spewing something I could barely understand.WHY do I want to speak with this scum.... because if I have the time.... I SO LOVE messing with these dirt bags and wasting their time!! See for about 25 minutes you keep them on the line asking a bunch of stupid questions and make them....think...THEY GOT YOU LOLOLOL!!! But then when you get tired of TRYING to understand what they are saying and when you do... VERY little makes ANY sense. You let them have it with ALL YA GOT letting them know that you know WHO and WHAT they REALLY are!!! Believe me...you WILL find out that the are NO ONE in any kind of authority because the swearing from them WILL commence!!! NO ONE in any kind of authority is going to speak to someone the way they do they ARE the lowest of the low, don't know if you can get ANY lower than vermin!!!! So IF you have time and you get 1 of these calls...just have a bit of fun with it, I've learned it does NO good to get angry over it because it WILL continue they CONSTANTLY change their phone #'s. I'm thinking this # is a new one folks the last 2 digits differ slightly. I'm to the point where I DON'T even want to speak with ANYONE from India ANYMORE they are REALLY giving their countryman and country a BAD RAP!!! ALL of these calls are now coming from people with and Indian accent.

Next thing you know they'll be calling you to tell you that you have a restraining order against you, your SSN has been blacklisted by the gov't and your drivers license has been invalidated.  These people must think that they have all the power of their deity, which isn't much...if any.

If they were going to garnish your wages, you'd have to have received a court summons and had a court date first.  If you LOST your case, you'd have a judgment entered against you.  All that would come BEFORE they could even ask to garnish your wages.  Your callers are foreign scammers and can't do zip to you.

Ha this is so annoying! It's like it stops and every couple months starts up again! If they were going to garnish wages then they have to send you a notice stating so before even contactiv your employer. These calls are so frustrating, I just want them to stop! The guy "William Jacobs" (because someone with such a heavy Indian accent would be named such an American name..) threatened to sue me and garnish my wages but never states my name, social security number, or anything.

Read this investigative report ABC News did on this scam:

Hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans have been targeted by abusive debt collectors operating out of overseas call centers suspected of links to organized crime in India, law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The calls are part of a massive scam, one that appears to target struggling Americans -- especially those who have gone online to apply for payday loans. Armed with personal information from those pilfered applications, the threatening callers, who claim to be debt collectors poised to initiate legal action, have managed to pry loose millions of dollars from their victims -- even when the victims never owed money in the first place.

"This is what we call a phantom debt collection scam," said Jon Leibowitz, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. "It's a very pernicious and innovative new fraud."

Working through call centers in India, the commission estimates that the criminals have dialed at least 2.5 million calls, persuading already cash-strapped victims to send them more than $5 million. Some have reported receiving dozens of calls per hour. They are victims like Cindy Gervais, of New Orleans, who went online for a quick loan when her husband's car was hit by a driver who didn't have insurance.

Even though she paid the loan off, the so-called "phantom" debt collectors with Indian accents began calling to say she still owed money.

"He more or less told me that if I didn't pay, they were going to have someone on my doorstep to arrest me," she told ABC News. "And that they were going to contact my place of business, and tell them what kind of person I am."

At first, she said she resisted. Then the calls became more frequent, and started to ring on her cell phone, and at the grocery distribution company where she had worked for 27 years.

"I was more or less in panic mode because he told me there would be someone before noon at my place of business to arrest me and take me to jail," she said tearfully. "So I agreed to pay him."

After receiving scores of complaints, investigators with the FTC said they began tracking the calls, and following the payments. They alleged the payments led them to a California company run by an Indian-American named Kirit Patel, and that such scams would not be possible without American front men.

"I would say that all roads of this scam, or many of the roads of this scam, lead back to Mr. Patel," said the FTC's Leibowitz.

ABC News tracked Patel for weeks, from the suburbs of San Francisco to Austin, Texas.

Patel refused to talk. But his lawyer, Mark Ellis, said he believes it is far too early to pass judgment on his client. Ellis, a Sacramento-based attorney, told ABC News that Patel was hired for a nominal fee to set up an American shell company, and had no idea what the call centers in India were doing.

"I can tell you, he was as snookered by the people in India as anybody," Ellis said. "He's a 69-year-old man who is nearing his retirement who thought all he had to do was set up some corporations and everything was on the up and up. He's completely dismayed that he has become the lightning rod of this entire problem."

A close friend of Patel's also defended him in a brief interview at his home, saying Patel was not trying to defraud anyone -- he was just an unwitting, bit player in a larger scheme.
