By the way...need I add that "kristen" above (and probably "sally" too) are fake planted comments?  Law firms have ZERO authority to put an individual in jail in the U.S.

Perhaps she's from Russia (where they can and do)?

Let me save you all some money and stress:  I have just hung up with a representative from the office of Consumer Affairs complaints for Kenneth T. Cuccinelli, Attorney General of Virginia.  They are well aware of the situation with this scam, which evidently originates in Loudon County, VA (Leesburg area).  First, to put some of your minds at ease?it is NOT a legitimate call from the law firm of Baker & McKenzie.  As several others have pointed out here, checks written to payday loan places and similar are not a criminal matter, as a rule. They are civil, which means nobody in a process-serving outfit can legitimately threaten you with arrest.  Period.  So take a deep breath.

I was worried sick after receiving these calls?even though I have no debt, I did have a primary brain tumor, and lost memory. Had I forgotten or overlooked something? I received a call from this number (to call ?Lisa Burns") and also from 571-252-3562 (allegedly a ?Nancy James?).  I consulted a real lawyer, who researched this on my behalf said it was a scam (previously noted). All of this has now been confirmed by the Virginia Attorney General, who?d clearly heard it all before. To quote their representative: ?I know they are cumbersome and a nuisance, but you have to just not answer the phone. I?m sorry.?  Please feel free to report them yourselves: (800) 552-9963.

Additionally, they recommended that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) be notified to begin criminal investigations (my sense is that the actual Baker & McKenzie has already begun this process).  Their number is (877) 382-4357, or you can issue a complaint online here: http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/contact.shtm

Ok, I received the same call so I acted as if I was not the person they were looking for, I was the babysitter and asked if I could take a message. She said her name was "Brooklyn Baker" but could not tell me the law firm she was calling from because I wasn't the person she needed to talk to but said there was an arrest warrant out on me for felony fraud, so she gave me this same number to call back. I then googled the number and found you fine ppl. I called back and they claimed they were from the MAJOR law offices of "Baker & McKenzie" which has several firms across the U.S. however none in Va. I called the REAL firm in NYC and she told me it's a total scam, they have been receiving calls constantly and DO NOT give them any info... I called this number back blocking my number and asked for "Brooklyn" she came on the phone I told I was calling back and explained how I couldn't find an office online for them in Va. so I called the NYC number and she hung up ! LOL They're idiots, that's all ! Ignore them. I hope I put you at ease. :)

Call came in from 571-252-3558 claiming I had a warrant for my arrest. Stated I could pay 400 dollars to avoid going to jail! I do have an unpaid pay day loan, but wasn't sure if I could really go to jail over this??

I just received a message from 1-517-252-3562 claiming they were representing Baker & Mc Kinsey and that I had a bad check that I got money from check-n-go and did not pay it from back in 2009. I was totally blew back and this lady claims that if I do not get a hold of her with the payment by Friday of this week which is the 5th of July then I am getting a warrant issued for me and I am on oxygen, and disabled with a very slim income of $720.00 a mouth. I am so afraid and do not know where to turn? My friend told me about this site, so if any body out there can help me I would appreciate it so much....

I haven't called them back but they left a message twice stating that a warrant for my arrest was being executed to the State of Michigan.  They didn't tell me what it was for but asked that I call them back or they were forwarding it on to Michigan.  The number comes up as it is from Leesburg, VA

Payday loans are just that--loans.  They are not a criminal matter, but a civil one. Nobody can arrest you for not making good on a check that wasn't good (cause it was post-dated) to begin with, especially with full consent of the person who accepted it (that way in the first place).

I feel sorry for folks who can't pay their bills...they don't run around threatening to ruin people.  These junk debt buyers are parasites.

Call from a "Mrs. Burns," claimed to be at Baker & McKenzie (actually a major law firm). Mentioning all manner of legal threats and pending "fraud charges, along with possible warrant for arrest."  I have no outstanding debt.  My attorney (actually also at a major law firm) researched; stated "plainly a scam--ignore."  When I forward her voicemail message to the Virginia Attorney General we'll let them handle it.

I recieved a call from these people, they were looking from my mother. They were claiming they needed a statement from her for an 'ongoing criminal investigation'. I had my mom call them and they threatened to give some papers to the state for a warrant for her arrest if she didn't give them $1010 for a 'payday loan she didn't pay' It's true my mom had a payday loan once 2 years ago, but she paid it back with interest. We thought it was real, but we did NOT hand out any cash, we called lawyers and state detectives to see what was going on. Each and every person said it was fake and everything they were saying was illegal. This number is from Virginia. The woman I spoke to was supposedly named Anna Mathews and the woman my mom spoke to was supposedly named Tracey Clark. My mom swears they sound like the same person. If you get a call from them, please ignore it, don't even entertain them. Or better yet, tell them you know they're a couple of scam artists and they won't be receiving any money from you. If they threaten to file some papers, tell them to go ahead. Alert your state of their scam and what they're threatening, they'll back off.
