Debt Collector
Got a phone call from them, told me he would have to end the phone call when I would not verify my address.  They are a debt collection service for a medical bill I am working on paying directly to the hospital... I called them back and spoke to a woman that told me because of HIPPA laws they needed to verify they were talking to the person directly.  HIPPA laws are for medical records and medical information... Since they would not verify who they actually are or what they were doing I told her to remove me from their data base, I would continue to deal directly with the hospital for my bill and don't call me again.  She said she would.

If it IS a debt collector, they are REQUIRED to give their Full name and the name of the company they are workiing for, AND they are required to give you the reason they are calling, whether you owe a debt or not. This is required, By Law.  If you are nuts enough to give them personal information, then you are deserving enough to lose whatever identity you have, along with credit and financial assests.  DO NOT, give out personal information over the phone to anyone who's identity YOU cannot verify yourself.  Including by looking them up on the internet.  (like this page or Whitepages.com, or some other way.  You can even contact your phone company and have them verify the callers number and identity who they are.  Then file a comlaint with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission.

The call was from a person who refused to identify himself and also asked for personal information.  "I must terminate the call."  he said apparently hoping his "threat" would result in my divulging personal information to a total stranger.  We receive many criminal calls and the problem is there are people out there who actually fall into their criminal traps.

If you owe the city of Columbia for an old bill or Boone/MU Hospital then they will find you and they will call you.  Pay your bills on time and this s*** won't happen.

Debt Collector
They called me today. It was obviously a wrong number on their part so I called them back and a woman answered the phone. I explained that they had the wrong number and she immediately said she would resolve it. She was actually very nice and professional.
My advice is, if it's a wrong number call them back, (be understanding given the debtor probably falsified their phone number with the intent to defraud. This collection agency has what information the creditor supplied them.) Explain that they have the incorrect number and ask that they delete your number. Simple. Providing they have the right number... quit complaining and work with them to resolve your debt. :)

This number called me today and when I answered they asked for personal informaiton.  When I asked who is this, they said may I have your DOB and address. I told them if I can't be allowed to know who this is, then I am not going to tell you my personal information.  He said then I will have to end this call and hung up.

Uhhh...no...debt collectors don't hang up on you. They also don't immediately start by trying to verify very personal information. If they are legit, they identify themselves and who they represent FIRST. They also don't ask you to verify personal information for your spouse. Again...if they are legit and are trying to collect a debt, they will only speak directly to the person whom they are trying to reach.

If someone calls you at multiple locations it probably means that they have significant resources at their disposal. A team of debt collectors perhaps?

It's against the law for any collector to release information pertaining to the account in question until they know they are speaking to the correct person... HIPAA... Look it up... And the funny thing is that the longer you refuse to verify, the longer it sits and gains interest and the longer it reports to your credit... It's not our problem, just pay your bills... Someone has provided you a service, whether it be healthcare of some kind or from a utilities company and you need to pay them for helping you out... It's that simple

Debt collectors have to verify your identity with the info you refused before they can stop calling you at a given number. No one can do anything fraudulent with the information that is required. The only thing that your DOB and last $ of your social is good for is paying bills. The worst thing that could happen giving that info is someone pays a bill for you. Honestly haha just pay your bills and you'll be fine... People that work at collection agencies are no different from any of you. They go to work, they do a job, they go home. That's it.

I work there.... They are legitimate... Debt collectors are not required by law to state that they are debt collectors, they ask for the information to protect your personal information from others who might claim to be you (believe me, it happens)... I am sorry if you received a rude phone call that is not company policy and I assure you that if I ever call you I will be professional and give you all the info I can without violating HIPAA or FDCPA

I had this number call me and an automated msg came on asking me to press 1 if I was this person and 2 if I wasn't. I hung up and called back to see what company it was. Still an automated msg answered the phone. Hell, a one-man band could run this out of their home. I asked what company I was calling and repeatedly she would not tell me but wanted the number I was calling from and my name. DONT GIVE OUT ANY INFORMATION UNTIL YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY VERIFY THE COMPANY AND DETAILS THEY MAY KNOW ABOUT AN ACCT YOU HAVE. ITS A SCAM--I googled this number and am so glad I did.

and another thing you know who is calling.  they send letters and they leave mssgs for you to call back.  so dont kid yourself.  you people just dont want to pay your debts.  just say dont call this number anymore. then you dont have to pay and they wont bother you anymore.  but the debt will still effect your credit.

Debt Collector
they are debt collectors and federal law prohibits them from giving info unless they verify identification withe the debtor.  its stupid but it could be a 1000 dollar fine for the collector if they dont verify id. either with dob, last 4 of ss or address. so its not their faults.  Its the law.

This number called my cell phone and asked for me. I said "This is her speaking." They then asked me to verify my address and dob. I then told them that was personal information. They could not disclose who they were until I verified the information. I then explained to them, that my information was private, I verified who I was..and I asked for them to verify to me who they were. They hung up.
