Continuously receiving calls from 585 331 8295 (caller ID comes up Albion, NY) asking to speak to the person who handles the RG&E account. I repeatedly tell them am not interested and they try to bully me into listening to what they have to say. How do I get them to stop calling my house 5-6 times a day?

OMG I got a call from an 810 number from Officer Mike, thank goodness we have the ability to block calls on our phone. it took interminable patience but we had to block 36 separate numbers. I've never taken a payday loan or even applied for one so I'm not sure how he got all of my information which is scary. We put a block on our social security numbers as I've had identity theft issues in the past. I work for a highly visible philanthropic organization as an executive and they called HR which was embarassing as hell and annoying. One time the guy called and said that i shouldn't threaten him anymore he wanted to be my friend and that he loved me and if i loved him back he would dismiss the lawsuit. That did it my husband called the police and and thank goodness we found this site we registered a complaint with the IC3 I can so recommend the panasonic phone system with call blocking because they are still calling as we see on our caller id when we get home where the phone has blocked a ton of calls through the day....

This man is calling me stating he is Officer Roger Hardy. He has a thick indian accent. He is very rude and threatening. I found a scam alert on a police department website warning about this man because he is using their officer's names. Please report this to everyone you can. This man needs to be stopped. He calls my work and embarasses me. I can't believe he goes to all this trouble to get a few bucks. WOW!

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam
January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers. Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.
When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid. Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago. The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names. It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.
When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent. These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address. Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.
If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court. Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union. The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.
A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment. This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work. Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.
?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.
?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact. The notification should contain information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.
More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

I received a call from these people today with all the same threatening things. They said they were watching my house number. That if I didn't cooperate and stop asking silly questions, they would hang up on me and then any bad thing could happen to me.
The number is from Albion, NY. But it is unlisted. They did have my SS#, called me at work, my address, and my email number. A while back I did apply for an online loan and I kept getting calls for months, and emails, etc. Maybe they got it from there. They also asked me where I banked. Fortunately I am so messed up from being sick and losing my car that I don't have anything really they can resquest. Although I guess they could sell my info.
The first guy said his name was Officer Mike Walters. The second guy was wonderful. His "name" is Denzil Anderson. I can't say they were Indian though. They sounded more African to me.
He started to cuss at me. Told me to shut up and listen, else he would hang up on me and any bad thing could happen to me.
He said that they had a government contract and that state attorney's were listening in so I had better tell the truth. I am creeped out.
Nichole 2010-06-15 23:12:33 Unknown
BKNY, thank you SO much for that link! I have just reported them. It ticks me off to no end that I received a call from work stating that these creeps were wanting to speak to me. I work in a State Prison, for goodness sakes! They were freaking!
bkny 2010-06-15 22:57:03 Unknown
Nichole - also report these creeps to www.ic3.gov. Good luck - I have been daeling with this for 6 months now, every time I think it has stopped they call back under a different number and name, but alway the same indian accent with americanized names and crackpot story about being arrested and jailed. I hope these creeps get caught and get the payback they so richly deserve!

Yeah, I received a message from an Officer O'Brien from this company, threatening to "block" my social security number. When I called back, I spoke to, wait for it, OFFICER AUSTIN. Anyway, I called the police department and my bank. I told them flat out that I thought they were from a call center and that this is a scam. They hung up on me. I will also be contacting the BBB.
Kristee 2010-06-15 22:39:41 Unknown
Same here, I am reporting it tonight to the authorities and I am also getting lifelock for identity theft since they might have my info!
Mark Linley 2010-06-15 21:09:05 Unknown
The same thing just happened to me. OMG. They even called me at work. These pieces of #$@!... Thanks for all the heads up on this, and thanks for posting what has happened to you all. It was also the same person, officer Alex Williams.

An indian guy called me as well. He knew all of my info. He said he was officer Austin. said i owed a payday loan from cash net and that i needed to pay at least 350 to keep it out of court. He said only to call him and that i needed to get this resolved ASAP. I dont have a bank of america account and i sure as hell never got a payday loan from cashnet. this is bull.... The number was 5853318295
Libra 2010-06-15 19:17:16 Unknown
I received a call today from a phone number 5853318295, Indian guy, and telling me that I have to call him back immediately. He said that he is some kind of criminal investigator and if I don't call back then good luck to me and my future. That was the message that he left. How do these people even know my name? I've read other peoples comments, and apparently these people know your social security number, where you work. This Indian guy even called me at work! I hung up on him. How can these people be stopped? Now I fear for my identity being stolen. What is the BBB really gonna do about this? What can they do?
