Today, I did have a message from Ashley Butler. Right now, I'm involved in a class action against Santander because of constant calls. If the collector calls you, friends, family, work constantly, then you do have a lawsuit. Of course, I don't know how much money these people have. I recently received a notification from the legal department at my work that someone wanted to serve papers to me. It is all bogus because I checked the state database for current court cases.

Using these tactics is so wrong and you get at least 500 per phone call by law. That person who was called 27 times, if you sue, you can get 15k.

Let's get a class action started. These people need to be stopped. They might not have the money, but at least we could stop them.

Get NOMOROBO for your phone (it's free). It will block these calls. If you have "do not disturb" on your  phone set, the phone won't even ring. I love it.

I've been getting calls from a company called CKS (different number).  I told them I won't give them any info over the phone, but to fax me information.  The only thing they have faxed is an employment verification form.  I answer the phone; duh...I am verifying I work there.  Anyway, I said email me.  The email I got wants me to waive certain rights...but I don't like their language (like they won't sell my info, but can give it to "certain 3rd parties"), so I have never responded.  I'm sure the debt is real, but I'm not releasing any information unless I can get legitimate information from the company, not the runaround.  I get calls all the time about "a file on their desk", "wanting to make a recommendation to their supervisor", etc.  I had one say they were going to serve me at work.  I said, well, you are talking to me at work, so go ahead...lol

Thanks to this website, I've had the same situation and phone numbers calling me repeatedly, however they've stopped leaving messages.  They just call, I don't answer and then it's done.  I'm so glad I looked these numbers up on here so I don't have to deal with this anymore.  I DID answer it once, just to see what would happen, and I didn't even get the courtesy of a human being to speak to.  I got a recording to call them back at a different number.  I laughed a little bit at that.  Why are you calling from a 612 number, but want me to call you back at an 860/725/etc number?  It's been my experience that any legitimate debt collector/attorney/company has a 1-800 number for returning calls.  This is just hilarious.  One time, I got harassed at work by a company that claimed I owed this crazy sum of money and that they were an attorney and they were just waiting to push the button to have my license suspended.  After about the third call, I called our local police department just to ask if they could even do that, who then returned their call and suddenly, magically, that debt didn't exist and they never called again.  Funny how that worked out...hmmmm...hahaha!

I just got one from Ashley Butler, too. Been getting 2-3 of these calls a week, and it's always from different people, and they never specify exactly who they want to talk to, just the line about a flile on their desk bladdabladdahbladdah.

I would think a legitimate debt collector would contact me by mail or at least have one person handling the account consistently.

I find it funny I get 3 messages all the same this week. One from Amber Knight @ 757-296-0106, one from Michelle @ 505-407-4481 and now this one too. I think these people are all scammers in cahoots.

Thank you Alfalfa was the information. There seems to be a lot of "fake debt collectors" out there lately and I recognize their routine pretty quickly. They never ask for anyone by name, they give the impression that the matter is urgent and that the next step is __________, fill in the blank, but it is meant to be intimidating.

I never talk to these people. If there was a legitimate issue, someone would contact me by mail. Meanwhile, I usually go online and check out any phone numbers I don't recognize.

Your message is full of great tips, thank you again.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

Left a message - Mr. Little wants to talk to me about a matter that had been brought to his attention. This sounds so familiar, like many other bogus and intimidating messages I've received. I'm getting so tired of these calls. Evidently the the Do Not Call list has no teeth whatsoever.
