The guy formerly known as Mark Davenport has just called my work phone about 2 minutes ago. It is a recorded message. He is now calling himself Andrew. No last name, just Andrew. It's a scam. He is calling from the number (919) 926-1700

Got the exact same call in Virginia.  I would venture to say that it's not Craigslist related because I/we do not have anything nor have we ever had our number listed on CL.  First time I called, after being on hold, a man answered and when I asked him "What's the name of this company?"  He hung up.  2nd time I called a lady answered and asked if we provided construction services.  I told her no and she asked for my number and said she would "remove it".

I work at a Construction Co. and Mark Davenport left a message with us saying he noticed we had done "work in his area before" (we have done national work in the past) and that his company is "back-logged". That he needs to get another construction company to help him catch up!  I am so glad my boss told me to google the number to check it out first!  Thanks guys!!!  BTW..We don't advertise in Craigslist at all!  Think they are using every tool available including the phone book!  And they are doing it by state. We are in Florida and just got the call today (3/29/13).

call id did not match number on message from mr. mark davenport.  and we are not a construction company, perhaps telemarketer didn't realize engineering is different from construction.

Got the same, call, same scam (MA number calling me in NJ.) Beware-it's not just from craigslist because I've never advertised there.

Same as the guy I replied too. I am in Seattle and got a robocall from Boston. Message was poorly made also. Tons of ums and ahs.

I received the same call. Google is great! I have a small handyman business in CA. and I need the work. I believe I'll mess with 'em too!

I called the number after "Mark Davenport" left a message to call him. I got the same info that James B. did!  After he mentioned the background check, I told him that I wasn't giving him my social security number.  CLICK!   This is a SCAM!

Yes,  I believe it is Craigslist related. I have rarely placed an ad on CL, but recently did for misc. house/yard work. I stated that I was not licensed and am not looking for a permant job. That I was laid-off for a 4 month period during the off-season and that I would be happy to do small work around one's home, such as house cleaning, yard-work, or dog-walking/sitting.
Besides a couple ligit local (Oregon) calls, I've received two calls from this 'Worksite Center' based out of New York and CA:

I called and waited a long time on hold, got a person stating right away that I'd be working for the banks and paid directly by the bank owning the property. Claimed there was tons of work in my area and would be paid from $200 - $600 per job. She then moved right on to needing my checking account info and permission to charge me a one time $99.00 fee for a background check.
Two things red flagged me right away:   I live in a very small beach town, that simply does not appear to have enough vacant properties were as one out of state company would have should a huge number of jobs in my 97138 zipcode. Also I have paid for a job-related background check and it cost something like $15.00.
Yes, unfortunately huge numbers of scammers are out there targeting good people using CL.

Yup... just got the same call from Mark Davenport to my Portland, Oregon Company.  Gotta love Google!  Two minutes to find out the history of this scam across the nation.  Wow!

got a call from this #-I actually do handyman work for a legit co out of mass-they send me wo online, I set appts. get paid direct deposit.-I'm in austin, texas.-would NEVER pay upfront for background check ect.(homedepot tried this with me) I wouldn't have fallen for this scam, but good to know not to waste my time(as with home depot)in my opinion ANYTHING that asks me to pay for background check ect. is a SCAM. This IS craigslist related, posted a ad for my services, so far, ONLY response has been scammers.

James, you sir are my hero! I often troll these boards looking for scammers who's time I can waste when I'm bored! I'm on hold with this company right now and am looking forward to asking THEM for the fee for a background check!

I decided to have some fun with these scammers.  I called them back, knowing they didn't know anything about me, gave them a zip code for Yellow Stone National Park (82190) and Wow!!!! turns out they have a lot of work for me.  

The lady proceeded to tell me that their company works with about 30 banks on foreclosed homes and that I would be paid for my repair work anywhere from $200-$600 per job, and all repairs only take a few hours..  I'm SO LUCKY!!!!

She then told me that all materials would be on site, so there's just the need for my company to show up and collect the money.  There's also a possibility of them sending me out to meet with clients at their homes and negotiate my own repairs at my own price.

The only catch???  I have to pass a background investigation (For the Banks of course) - which only costs $99.00.  She asked if I would be able to take care of that..

"Of course I can, and I'm happy to have your company join my services" I replied, but..."Only after your company passes my business background investigation, and that charge is only $198.00"  I asked the lady on the other end of the phone if she was authorized to make that commitment to me.  

She fussed a bit, telling me that I would be working for the banks and not them, and then I threw it back at her - if I'm contracted to do the work through their leads, then I'm working for them.  I asked her again for my fee ($198.00) to run their company through a background investigation and she said "You know what Sir, I'm just a consultant and I don't want to work with your company" and hung up.  

So much fun, I think I'll mess with them any time I'm bored.

Just got the call and let it go into voice mail and decied to google the phone number.... Gotta love google! Thank you everyone for your warnings.

Construction - North Carolina

Its a scam, they tell you they have plenty of construction work.
Than they tell you you have to pay for a background/credit  for $100.
They actual are the Bureau,
But they take your money and they don't have any work.
Its a scam.
The FBI is looking ointo their operation, its just an out and out scam.
Their caller ID is Fake also.

I got the same message. I do own a cleaning co. That supplements my income and its upsetting someone feels its funny to play this kind of game with working folks.  When I returned the call no one answered the phone, by the way, I am in AZ.

Mark Davenport just left the same BS message in Washington state

got a call from this number and he left a message saying it was Mark Davenport and he heard i was offering construction services and wanted to hire me to help them but left no company name and the call was from MA and i live in MD.
