I have been contacted by someone twice from this number stating that I was in default over a payday loan and the first caller stated I had to pay 750.00 by end of the day or the following day I would owe 3000.00. I argued with them and ask for supporting documentation and they are unable to provide me with any. I called the AG in NC where I live and reported them. Then a month later another phone call and another outrageous amount of money being demanded.

Beware dont give them any money...... The said they were from LLC law firm in NYC

The man claimed I had a payday loan outstanding and he was suing me and pressing charges for federal fraud claims.....Scared me to death but what seemed weird is I couldn't understand him, he couldn't provide me with any information and got hostile when I asked questions.  I asked to speak to the supervising attorney in his firm and he said he was the highest it got.  So I asked for his bar # as I just graduated law school and was going to look him up, try figure out where this case came from and he hung up on me.  I called back and he argued was rude and hung up on me again.  This is a total scam.

Got a call from this number 626-243-5255 by the name of Steve Lawson, I already familiar this type of person trying to collect personal information for scams, it is a scam, they tried pulling one on my about 1 year ago, these are representative that are calling from outside the US with phones that are routed within the US, I did some investigation before, unfortunately if you fall for the scam, to bad, law enforcement cant do anything, but what they can do is if they harass you more then 3x's and u report it to the law enforcement they will go to the location where that number is assigned to and can actually arrest the person, but usually they are phone dialers that route the call outside the us, these scammers seem to get there information from a source within the us, i think they got my info from applying for a personal loan online, but me personally i no better and will never give anyone info on the phone especially when its a foreigner from India by the name of Steve Lawson, lol please.

I received several calls from this number at my work today.  Saying I had a legal case against me.  That I took out a payday loan that I never paid back.  I hung up on them, and the same person called me back.  I told them that I didn't owe anyone any money, and they said that if I didn't pay they were going to send out their federal investigators to my place of employment.  They called and left a message on my personal number and the message sounded very threatening.  How can we report them.  Need to find out what company this is and report them.  Anyone help?

yes, unfortunately they do... they use fear tactics... calling your work repeatedly and threatening to contact your HR department and 'notify' them of the charges being brought against you... First time I received the call I was extremely upset... knowing I had borrowed a payday loan online.. but also stood firm that I knew I paid it back.... would go no further until I researched it at my bank.. they are relentless and therefore I think some people panic and pay.. thinking they will research it later.... DO NOT DO THIS OR GIVE THEM ANY MORE INFO...

Our information has already been compromised by a huge data breach.  The only recorse we have is to put a fraud alert on the three major credit bureaus so they cannot apply for credit under our SSAN.. and to change your bank account.  I have actually even changed banks and I have more peace of mind.    .

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam

January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers.   Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid.  Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago.  The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names.  It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.

When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.

If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.

A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.

?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.

?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

To register a complaint with the Kansas Attorney General?s Consumer Protection Division, call 1(800) 432-2310 or visit www.ksag.org.

Number called my wife; same threatening msgs, same rudeness. They refuse to identify themselves, I told them I was a lawyer and was recording the call- to which he said he was recording the call too, and pressed a random button. They have their system down. They have my wife scared to buy anything online. Thankfully, we have Lifelock?- (I dont work for them, just flaunting my iPhone) and I called them and reported it. I told my wife it was a scam, and this page helps reassure me. Get on prankdialer and let's launch an all out assult on these fearmongers! Please post their number whereever you can, and leave a comment on Obama(good or bad, doesn't matter), and they will be too busy fighting off angry people looking for you that they can't terrorize our wives anymore
